Lord Maekar seeks out Jon Gaunt, as the man visits his mistress in the city, the night after his return to King's Landing. "Ser Jon, I would speak with you for a moment," he said. The street was rather busy, and Maekar stood off to one side of the press of the crowd.

Ser Jon turned to look at him in surprise. "Lord Maekar. I didn't know you were back in the city?" He seemed somewhat startled, with all his thoughts on his lover waiting in her late husband's shop. "I have an engagement, my lord. But I can spare ten minutes if it please you."

"It would, Ser," Maekar replied solemnly. "I wish to speak with you of the King's death. Which of your men was guarding his chamber that night?" he asked, getting straight to business.

"Stokeworth and Buckler. Both are good men and most dutiful. I trust them to guard the king to the best of their abilities," Ser Jon answered. "They say the King summoned the woman to his chambers for a tryst."

"You knew the King better than any, Gaunt," Maekar replied, with a slight sneer. "You know as well as I that the notion of a pregnant woman slaying him with his own sword is as ludicrous as the notion that Ser Brandon was deserving of his post. I suspect that the King was dead before his whore was even summoned to that chamber; I have heard tell of a cult of assassins in the east, who can change their faces at will. That bloody sorceress murdered my father, I am sure of it. Why else would she disappear the day of his death?"

"I have never spoken to the sorceress," Ser Jon admitted. "i have no liking for such creatures. Are you claiming that the sorceress was one of those such assassins? Who do you think would have paid her? The Dornish? One of the Free Cities? They have many assassins in Braavos, do they not?"

"I do not know, but I intend to find out," Maekar replied ominously, staring at Gaunt for a long moment. "The King did you a dishonor when he passed you over for Lord Commander; you were always more fit than Ser Brandon, despite the dragon he rides. I would see that mistake rectified, if you believe that your sworn brothers will follow your lead."

"I would certainly hope so. Ser Brandon is loyal, none can dispute that, though his concept of duty differs somewhat from mine, and I have far more experience in the Kingsguard than he. I doubt he would have been given the post if he were not blood of the dragon, if you'll beg my pardon," Ser Jon observed. "I have always held to the opinion that a Kingsguard should not be blood of the dragon. The conflict that comes with disputes within the family are not best served by a member of the family serving as the royal bodyguard. Such a man would have a vested interest in the doings of the crown, no matter how much he tried to remain neutral and dutiful," Ser Jon observed. "But I could hardly argue with His Grace's choice, could I?"

"I agree, and few could argue with one of the King's choices. There will be a new King now, however, and I agree that a dragon would not aid you in your duties. Deliver me the Kingsguard, Ser Jon, and I will make you Lord Commander," Maekar replied, the implication clear.

Ser Jon's eyes widened. He was silent a moment. "Deliver the Kingsguard to you? My lord, let us be clear. You are claiming the crown, then? I had not considered such a possibility. And yet, your military prowess is considerable, and the realm needs a strong king. Prince Aegon is...not like his father."

"I am the King's firstborn son, and his choice as well. The King spoke to me of his intention for the Princess Rhaena and I to rule side-by-side. He cared not for Aegon, and intended to disinherit him when he returned to Westeros. I have no proof of this, so I have no intention of making it public, but it is the truth; I swear it to you on my father's life and on the honor of House Targaryen itself," Maekar replied sincerely.

Ser Jon nodded. "That I can believe...Your Grace. I know His Grace loved Princess Rhaena well and that he thought Prince Aegon weak."

"Will you serve as the Lord Commander of my White Swords, Ser Jon? Westeros, and the House of Targaryen, will need men such as yourself, steadfast and true, and capable to the last," he said. "I will need you, if I am to claim my birthright and fulfill the wishes of my father."

Ser Jon looked solemnly at Maekar and then knelt. "I will. I swear it by the old gods, and the new. I respected your father more than any man living. I will do my duty by him, even after his death. Your Grace."

Maekar nodded solemnly. "Rise, Lord Commander. I will appear in the Great Hall tomorrow morning, when court is held, and declare myself. I would have you by my side, with your sworn brothers as well."

Ser Jon Gaunt, the new commander of the Kingsguard, and sole remaining member, arrives at Maekar's chambers bearing a letter.
"Your Grace, this was just delivered from Dragonstone. I think you ought read it."
He handed over the letter.
To My Sworn Brethren:
I write to you from the keep on Dragonstone, having returned from Essos with His grace upon word reaching us of the death of King Maegor. Aegon has been formally crowned by his grandmother Laena, who crowned Maegor before him, done in the name of the Seven as well as the Gods of Valyria, and in accordance with all rights and rituals. According to a message we received from the King prior to our departure,King Maegor feared that Maekar Waters intended to slay him. Please advise. We have likewise received word that Maekar Waters intends to seize the throne. Please Advise.
On your honor as members of the Sworn Brotherhood of the Kingsguard, keep her grace the Queen Mother safe from harm, uphold the honor of King Aegon and House Targaryen, and await our return.
Copies of this letter have been provided to Lords Buckler and Stokeworth, with instructions to deliver it unopened, and a copy sent by Raven to the maester at the Red Keep. If any of these three fail to deliver their letter, please advise.
-Brandon Snow

Maekar read it swiftly, and looked at Ser Jon Gaunt. "Ser Brandon is not one to lie, so he clearly believes that his words are the truth, though they are not," he said, catching the other man's gaze and holding it. "Do you believe that I murdered my father, Ser Jon?"

"Of course not. Why would you murder the man who wished you to succeed him?" Ser Jon countered. "That's not logical at all. It must have been someone else. His Grace had few friends and many enemies, I fear."

King Maekar summoned the Lord Commander of his Kingsguard to speak with him, shortly after his duel with Ser Symon Buckler. When Gaunt arrived, the King greeted him and got immediately to business. "I need you to draw up a list of candidates, Ser," he said. "Men of honour and loyalty, who've got the skill at arms worthy to stand beside you. Ten names should suffice, and I will name six of them to the Kingsguard beneath you."

Ser Jon nodded. "I can do that, Your Grace. If i can find ten men worthy of the white cloak. That is a rather more difficult task in the present circumstances, as I am sure Your Grace is aware. Serving as a Kingsguard at present is likely to result in a much shorter lifespan. We're sure to have to replace some of the men chosen now before the war ends. But I will do what I can, Your Grace."

"I just mean find ten men whose skill and loyalty you would approve of, and I shall choose six from among them," the King replied. "It is among the highest of honors to serve on the Kingsguard, and you'll know the men of skill in Westeros better than I, I imagine."
