They had waited for a night when Maekar had Dragonpit duty; it was the King's decree that a Dragonrider remain in the pit at all times, so that at least one dragon would be instantly able to take to the sky in the event of a threat. Tonight was Maekar's night on duty, when he arrived he nodded to Trajan, who had been on the previous shift, as the other Inquisitor headed back up to the castle.
Maekar helpde Vira down from her horse, and moved toward the postern gate that always stood open on the side of the Pit. The massive main gates stood partially open, and the man-sized postern tended to remain fully open at all times, though a small number of Goldcloaks who were unlucky enough to draw the graveyard shift stood clustered around a small fire several feet away from the gate. Maekar went over to them, holding out a skin of wine. "Some spiced wine, lads, to warm your bones," he said, offering them the skin. "Hope you don't mind, but I'm taking the lady down to see the dragons," he added with a lecherous grin, though his tone clearly indicated that he was informing them of what he meant to do, rather than asking their permission.

He made his way into the Pit and paused just inside. There were enough torches that a dim light was cast over most of the interior, and every now and then a dragon would let out a gout of flame, illuminating their cave before fading to blackness again. Maekar looked to the massive shelves where the dragon saddles were kept. He did not move toward them yet, instead casting his eye over the entire Dragonpit. He was looking for the presence of attendants, which dragons if any were nearby (especially the Queen's Amethyst), and at the saddles specifically, trying to determine which of them was the Queen's.

There were two attendants dragging a freshly slain lamb towards one of the cave tunnels where the dragons were housed, but other than that they were alone. There were no dragons within sight, though smoke billowed from a few of the caves.
He finds the Queen's saddle easily enough, hanging on the wall in a place of honor.

Maekar pulled Vira close, and pressed her against the wall between the Queen's saddle and the one that hung to its left. "Moan, as if this was the last time we were here together," he whispered, kissing her ear. He kissed a trail down her neck, pulling her dress off her shoulders as he did so. As he leaned over her, however, he drew the dagger from his belt, and made a series of short slashes on several key straps with the sharp blade. He was careful not to cut all the way through the leather, and to cut the under-side, so the scores would not be visible except by the most careful of inspections.
Each strap was scored four times about halfway through the leather as best as Maekar could figure in the dim light. The scores were very close to each other, and the straps he had selected were ones that he had deemed important to the saddle's integrity and yet not the ones that would wear out quickly so they would be less likely to be checked on a regular basis. Watching the Maestro repair and re-fit Cyrax's on Dragonstone several days earlier had been greatly helpful in determining where he needed to place the cuts.
He sheathed the dagger when he was finished and pressed himself against Vira again, as she writhed and moaned beneath him.

"I believe so," Maekar murmured in her ear, pulling her close. "Make sure your birds know to spread the word; when the Queen falls from the sky, it must be declared that she was struck down by the Gods and I am the true King."
He took her hand and pulled her away from the wall. "Return to your manor, love. The guards will just think you came down to entertain me on my guard shift," he said with a chuckle.

Maekar guards the Dragonpit dutifully, ready to take flight aback Cyrax if any threats do come to the city before the end of his shift.
