During the wedding feasts, after the ceremony but before the bedding had begun, Maekar approached the Hand of the King to draw him aside for a short conversation.

Janos followed Maekar before saying. "Lord Dracaryn, what can I do for you?"

"My Lord Hand," Maekar said respectfully, bowing his head. "I trust you are enjoying the celebrations? I had a question or two to ask you, about Driftmark and High Tide, if you are amenable."

"I suppose" Janos said. "I will do what I can to answer your questions"

"I imagine you have spent your time mostly at court, but I was wondering after your influence on Driftmark. It was your brother's seat, yes, but surely you are well known at High Tide, and the men would look to you for command should it be necessary? I ask only because there have been disturbing reports coming out of the east, and I want to be sure that the mouth of the Blackwater Bay is securely guarded; it seems like your Lady Niece does not care much for her duties as the Mistress of Driftmark and I would be sure that someone is ready to command the men of Driftmark, in the event that she is not," Maekar replied.

"If it came to it I suppose I could, though I do not have much knowledge of war" Janos said. "Though it has been many years since I was last there, so I cannot say for certain how well my taking command would go"

"Any assault would come from the east, and it would come by sea most likely. I doubt any could be fool enough to attack King's Landing directly, with the Black Dread present but if I were the captains of Lys I would be considering raids against our seaborne lords in the Blackwater Bay, and as such I want to ensure that someone with the will to see that Driftmark is protected, can be able to get there quickly to do so," Maekar replied.

"That makes sense enough" Janos said. "I will make sure that I am ready to leave on short notice, or if my duties require me to travel, that someone of capacity and who is respected there can fill such a position quickly"

"If your duties will allow it, I would ask that you fly to Driftmark in the next few days," Maekar asked. "Just temporarily, but it would be wise to speak quietly to the garrison, the castellan and such, to gauge their readiness to follow you, should the situation call for it. Find out which of them will follow you, and which of them will need extra… motivations," Maekar replied carefully.

"The sooner you are able to do so, the better I would say, my lord Hand," Maekar replied. "Within the next fortnight, I should think."

"I can easily make the time for a visit within the next fortnight, and it would be a good excuse to ride Caligo too" Janos said. "Is that all?"

"Unless you have anything you wish to say to me, that is all, my lord," Maekar replied, with a respectful bow.

"Other than Congratulations on the wedding, nothing springs to mind" Janos said. "I hope you enjoy the feast, I think I might take my leave"
