The day before the weddings, Maekar seeks out Aerion Targaryen, sometimes called 'Strongdragon', and is informed that the man is at some sort of fire-ritual, a bonfire about a mile away from the city along the River where some foreign sailors have gathered. Meakar arrives on horseback, rather than dragon aback, alone but for two guards. He dismounts, but waits respectfully for Aerion to finish whatever he is doing, though it is clear that he wants to speak with the man afterwards. He is garbed in the traditional black leather and chain of an Inquisitor, and his cloak and hood are of the same color.

A strong wind blew upon them, a storm gathering in the east. It threatened to blow the small fire out completely but whether by prayer or luck, the flames persevered. "For the night is dark and full of terrors," The gathering chanted in a colorful variety of different languages. Aerion spoke his farewells before seeking the inquisitor. He wore heavy red robes, though still the wind was forceful enough to play at the skirts.
"Inquisitor." Aerion said by way of greeting, taking note of the chain. "What brings you to the fires?"

"I would speak with you, Lord Aerion," Maekar said, with a respectful bow of his head, though his single eye watched the fires curiously. He waved away his guards, who retreated a respectful distance. "I do not come to speak to you on business, but the pretext of an Inquisitor coming to intimidate the brother of a traitor would not go suspected by any who were to hear of it. Tell me; the King has commanded you to marry a daughter of Lord Greyjoy, but do you desire a wife that might bring you more than a few rocks on the Iron Islands?"

"The Lord of Light has helped me find solace in the matter of my betrothal, but that does not mean I am resolved. You hold my interest, Lord Maekar."

They heard the clopping of hooves, and a rangy black mare came in sight, bearing Vira on her back, in a dark green riding habit and gloves of black wool. She did not look askance at the bonfire or the sailors, but merely smiled politely as she dismounted and walked over to Maekar and Aerion.
"Strongdragon, it is a pleasure to meet you again," she said curtseying to Aerion. She had met him once, at Baelon Waters' wedding. She turned to Maekar and gave him a soft kiss in greeting.

Maekar smiled at Vira as she arrived, accepting her kiss but not otherwise acknowledging her before he turned back to Aerion. "I do not know if you have noticed it as well, but it seems as though this brief respite of peace since Oldtown is just the calm before a second storm that gathers," Maekar replied. "I would see the Lords of this Kingdom bound more tightly than the throne, and to be frank, there are more important men than Lord Greyjoy whose loyalty will be needed by the crown. His grace the King ought not publicly break his word to a Lord Paramount, but I would sooner see you wed to Tysha Lannister," he added, naming the eldest, and recently widowed, daughter of the Lord of Casterly Rock.

"A far more suitable match for a Targaryen," Vira murmured.

"Lady Vira." Aerion acknowledged the woman with a bow. "I was once of mind that in comparison to a Dragon, there is little difference between Kraken and Lion." He rubbed his chin in thought. "But I was young then. You would have me break my sworn word to Lord Greyjoy in favor of this Lannister woman?"

"I would have you weigh your options. In truth… I fear that Prince Aegon is planning to seize the throne from my father. I have agents across the Narrow Sea and they indicate that the Prince has quietly been meeting with sellsword captains and the men who sell poisons. If it comes to that, I want to be sure of your loyalty to the crown, and to the King," Maekar replied softly. "I am taking a grave risk in speaking to you of this without any direct proof, but my first duty is to see that threats to the crown are eliminated and that I must fulfill at any cost. Can I trust you, my lord?"

Aerion closed his eyes as he absorbed the news. "Kinslaying is a indeed grave crime, and once committed it becomes a stain that cannot be removed. Much akin to bastardry, I believe." He folded his hands within the sleeves of his robe. "Tell me my Lord, you ask me of trust. You claim that the King's own son plots his death yet it seems that it is the other son that skulks in the shadows. Why should either of a us trust the other?"

"You have no reason, and the risk I take in speaking with you is grave; you could send a messing to the prince tomorrow informing him that I know of his plans, if he has already somehow swayed you to his side," Maekar replied. "I suspected that you may not have been happy with his grace the King's choice of your bride, which was negotiated by his bastard brother on the eve of battle; that would certainly give you a reason to give the Prince's plot a sympathetic ear."

"Prince Aegon is an angry and vengeful man," Vira said. "Surely you must have noticed that his fair beloved, Lady Elseyris, has been suffering. And it festers in Aegon's heart."

"Prince Aegon is many things," Aerion allowed, "But I had not thought angry and vengeful among them." He brushed a lone strand of hair from his eyes. "But I am not his man, Lord Maekar, you need not worry your noble self. Yet King Maegor still lives and as such I am sworn to marry Lord Greyjoy's daughter. I do not think your scheme is possible, my lord."

"The King lives, and we are thankful for that," Vira said. "But the King is a mortal man, and he has enemies. Maekar strives to protect him from them, but we fear that even our best efforts will not be good enough. There is too much instability."

"So it would seem." Aerion regarded the peasant girl coolly. "I shall pray for his safety."

"You may do well to think about how the Faith of the Seven treats heretics, Lord Aerion, and consider the power they will gain through Prince Aegon's ascension to the crown. He fought beside us against them, it is true, but when their leaders died they were left with the need of a new figurehead to rally around. Mark my words; the day the King dies, whether it is naturally or by an action of the Prince, we will begin to see Faith of the Seven elevated far above the gods we worship, and you can be assured that it will not be pleasant for those of us who do not join the Seven," Maekar replied.

"Just so." Aerion replied. "Tell me, how do you plan to see me wed Tysha Lannister without upsetting two of the most severe men in Westeros?"

"Well I suppose it comes down to not caring a whit about what Lord Greyjoy thinks," Maekar replied thoughtfully. "I doubt that the King cares particularly about giving the Iron Islands a dragon rider of their own. He cannot deny that it provides the crown far greater benefit to have a strong hand ruling the West after the current Lord Lannister, and one with close ties to the crown at that. Lady Tysha is the wealthiest heiress in the Seven Kingdoms, and I am told that she's got huge… tracts of land. Are you telling me you would truly prefer to marry one of those limp squids they call women on the Iron Islands?"

Aerion Strongdragon ignored the question. "Make no mistake, Lord Greyjoy is a dangerous man and not an enemy I wish to make lightly. But, should the King give his approval, then you shall have mine."

Maekar stared at the other man for a long moment. "Can the King count on your loyalty, Lord Aerion, even against his own blood should circumstance call for it? Not an easy choice, to be sure, but if the King can count upon you and Servys, you have my word that I shall do all I can to see you wed to a woman befitting your station, rather than the first whore Lord Greyjoy put forward for you," Maekar replied.

"Any Andal woman is a prize compared to the Iron Islanders," Vira murmured. "My lord Aerion will be better pleased with an educated, cultivated maiden from a proper castle, with chests of gold and knights as part of her sizable dowry, not a rough reaver's daughter with a ship."

Aerion gave the common-born woman little more than a sidewards glance. "I care little for the King's own blood." He muttered. "But I do not forget a debt, Lord Maekar. Arrange this marriage between myself and Lady Lannister and you can be assured of my loyalties to the throne."

Aerion grasped the hand with a firm shake. "Best not delay. The wayward Prince returns soon."
