Triarch Vhassar sits at the center of the raised table on the dais, with her father on her left, her husband to her right, and their two small children on her husband's other side. She watches the feast proceed regally, eating little but drinking her fill. Despite numerous glasses of wine, however, the alcohol has no visible effect on her.

"That is unfortunate. I am sure my kin will remember to put aside their weapons in future. I know they meant no slight to your hospitality, Master Azantys. I for one would be very happy to see a test of skill. I am sure Ser Brandon or my daughter, the Princess Arenya, will be happy to oblige." She looked coolly at them both. "You will find that we are are martially minded family, I believe."

"Perhaps it would be enjoyable for us to be seeing them fight each other," the Triarch said to Princess Laena, meeting the older woman's eye with a small smile. "To… how you are saying, first blood?

Laena gave the woman a cool smile. "Oh, hardly. A bastard is not allowed to damage one of royal blood, and the Lord Commander is sworn to protect his trueborn kin." She looked at the pair as if daring them to disagree with her. "I would rather see how your own people fight." She turned to Brandon. "Ser, will you not show these people how a knight of the Kingsguard fights?"

Brandon stared hatefully at the back of Laena's head.
"I am certain that's not necessary," He replied with a scowl.

"I guess that was my cue to put my sword away and take a seat or..."Arenya looked from Brandon to her mother, whispering,"Our hosts want us to fight." She grinned,"Didn't we already have the dance, with you winning in the end?"
Obeying her mother, she unbelted her sword, still sheathed and carried in her hand to the table, nodding with respect to her mother and the Triach,"My apologies mother."

A pair of slaves ran up, and took the sword's sheath in their hands, gently but firmly pulling the weapon from Arenya's grasp and retreating back toward the wall.
"Perhaps it is being best," the Triarch agreed, looking from Laena to Brandon. "Even if it is being a fight to first blood, one can never be being sure that the Unsullied will not be killing his opponent. It is what they are being trained to do, after all."

"They can ask the Lysene if they want to know how a Kingsguard fights," he muttered.

"Don't apologise, girl," Laena murmured to Arenya . "You are a dragon. But we should respect their customs, I do not deny it."
She ignored Brandon rather pointedly, as she so often did. "You are quite right, of course," she agreed with the Triarch. "I should like to see what the Unsullied are capable of, nonetheless. We have no Unsullied in Westeros. No slaves of any kind. Nor are eunuchs common. But I have always wondered, how does a eunuch amuse himself if he cannot resort to the activity favoured by most men?"

He strangles his stepmother, Brandon thought to himself.

Taking her seat at the table, Arenya nodded,"Yes mother, of course."

"He is serving his Master, as all of such station should. Your Kingsguard are being sworn to celibacy, is it not being so? Is it not being the same for them, as it is being for our Unsullied?" the Triarch asked, looking at Brandon again with a small smile. She clapped her hands twice, and two Unsulled stepped into the center of the room, facing the center dais. "What is it you are wishing to see, Princess of Westeros?"

Laena smirked at the triarch. "Our Kingsguard are celibate, but they are still men. I am fairly sure my lord uncle never ordered Ser Brandon gelded. But perhaps it is not so different otherwise." She gave the Unsullied a critical eye. "Make them fight. To the death."

"That will not be necessary," Aegon replied, successfully resisting the urge to give his grandmother a disdainful glance in front of their hosts. "I see no reason to dirty your feasting hall with blood."

The Triarch had raised her hands to clap them again, but looked at Aegon with an amused expression. "It is being as you say, Prince of Dragonstone," she said with a smile, and waved the two Unsullied back to their positions lining the wall. Another course was brought out to the table by a veritable army of slaves; A massive roast peacock, its plumage arranged in an ornate decorative display, stuffed with oysters, mussels, and black truffles. There was also a spicy, creamy stew of mussels, crabs, and four kinds of fish, a dish that was known far and wide as a fabulous specialty of Volantis.

Aegon could identify about half of the dishes, though to their hosts' credit even the more exotic courses looked mouth-watering. Even so, Aegon had his man Ser Rolf taste everything that went on his plate, and only after a suitable period of time did the prince himself eat.
"It all looks delicious," Aegon replied courteously. "My compliments to your chefs."

Arenya watched her nephew and smirked again at his caution. Waiting on her mother to retort in some sort of way, she turned her gaze at their host again and at the servants posted along the walls. They would move and die at a motion from her without protest or hestitation.
"Wonderous", she remarked, but she was not speaking of the food.

The Triarch's mouth tightened at the sight of Aegon's food taster. "It is being very insulting to be mistrusting your hosts so, Prince of Dragonstone," she said in terse tones. "We are being civilized people here, and our honor is being greatly impugned if anything is happening to our guests under this roof."
She paused for a moment, eyeing Aegon, and she lowered her voice, moving closer to where he was seated. "Are you have so many enemies, Prince of Dragonstone, that you are being wary of them even in our kitchens?"

"We had an encounter with your neighbors the Lysene, as I'm sure you heard." Brandon replied, "and some among them may harbor ill will. If you want to vouch for their good conduct as well, you are a brave woman indeed." Brandon said, "Prince Aegon's majestic father, King Maegor, rider of Balerion," he reminded her, "has faced four attempts on his life. All bested. Everyone knows they can not stand agains the Dragon in open combat. So we must be always on guard against the scoundrels."

The Triarch shrugged lazily. "We are not caring, in this Daughter, what the rebellious children who are being our western neighbors are doing. Perhaps your King's servants are being to blame, for not being devoted enough in their service. My slaves are obeying my commands always, and in Volantis it is being a great shame for harm to be coming to one's guest. If the guest is being important enough, perhaps the shame is being great enough for the host to be taking his own life to attone for it."
"You are not having this, in Westeros? The rights of a guest are not being sacrosanct?" she asked, with genuine curiosity.

Brandon's desire to kill every single one of these split-tongue foreign cocksuckers grew ten-fold.
"We have guest rite." Brandon intoned, "but then we have laws against thievery as well. We still find it necessary to take a hand to punish a thief."
He did not believe for even a moment that these Volantene scum were so ignorant to the ways of the world that they truly begrudged a man a food taster or a bodyguard. No this was a spectacle intended to embarass the heirs into dropping their defenses. Brandon was not inclined to play along.

The Triarch smiled again, and clapped her hands as more slaves came forward to clear away the remnants of the first course. A second stream of them flowed out of the kitchens, bringing trays bear a dozen roasted herons, drizzled with a sweet plum sauce, and surrounded by an array of stuffed chestnuts and mushrooms. The spiced rum from the Summer Islands that had accompanied the first course was cleared away as well, replaced with a pale amber wine, as well as the pear brandy that the Westerosi recognized as an import from Tyrosh. There was another soup as well, a clear broth with peppery diced meat of some kind, and steamed vegetables, as well as several platters covered in blood oranges, pineapples, and fireplums, all carved intricately and arranged into beautiful decorative displays.
"Theives are being executed in Volantis," the Triarch replied. "We are finding that it is being a better deterrent. Some Triarchs are preferring to use tasters for their food, but I am not being so paranoid as they. Some, in Volantis, are still remembering our ancient customs," she added, laughing lightly. "I am not taking offense, however. Westeros is being a dark and dangerous place, and it is not being a surprise to me that its people are always fearing knives in the dark."

Triarch Vhassar shrugged again, turning her attention away from Brandon and toward the more important of her guests. "Is the meal being to your liking, Princess of Westeros?" she asked, though it was not quite clear if she was speaking to Rhaena or Laena.

"I cannot entirely blame my grandson for employing a food taster," said Laena, "I regret any offence it may cause but the dragon has many enemies and not all of them are afraid of a sea crossing. Nonetheless, the food is very good. I am rather fond of the soup."
