Rhaegar was seated by the window staring out across the city as he was inclined to do. An open book lay face down on the table beside him.
"Does she now?" he said, the memory of Maekar's warning still fresh in his mind and determined at the same time not to be commanded like a servant. "Please inform Lord Maekar's mistress that sadly I have to decline."

"I am indisposed." said Rhaegar firmly. "She has already been informed of that."

"Our orders are to escort you to the Lady Vira's chambers, my lord," a second guard said just as firmly, his tone remaining respectful. "If you will please come with us…"
"You are welcome to be indisposed while enjoying your meal with Lady Vira," the first guard added, walking over to stand beside Rhaegar's chair. He laid his hand firmly on Rhaegar's shoulder. "She will be pleased to attend to you."

Rhaegar remained seated. "Tell my betrothed that she may come here if she wishes to meet with me."
He looked disdainfully at the hand on his shoulder. "And get your hands off me. I am a Targaryen."

The first guard stepped back after a moment, and look at his comrades. Two of them took up positions flanking the doorway, and the third leaned lazily against the wall. "We have our orders, my lord, we shall wait here until you are well enough to accompany us to lady Vira's chambers," the first guard said.

"Reasonably well." said Rhaegar coldly, most unimpressed by her clear attempt to intimidate him. He waved at a seat, indicating that she should take it. He looked around at the guards disdainfully.
"I do not appreciate the heavy-handedness my lady."

"No. Your guards did. Apparently they had orders to 'escort' me to your chambers despite me informing your servant that I was already indisposed. One of them even dared to lay a hand on me."

"If they had frightened me, I would have gone with them. The Faith Militant were far more frightening than this lot." said the lord who had led the storming of the walls at Oldtown.

"They will not lay a hand on my person again." said the seventeen year old Rhaegar coldly. "Is that clear my lady?"

OOC: Rhaegar was born in 63 AL. See link to character sheet in sig.
Rhaegar's features remained impassive. "The Red Keep my lady? Why I had planned to move to the manse that His Grace has provided for us on the occasion of our marriage. Are you suggesting that my person will be in danger if I do so?"

OOC: you changed it. "I see the time has come for frank talk," Vira said, settling herself more comfortably in the chair. "I had hoped we might discuss this over lunch together. I have no desire to harm my own husband, but nor do I intend to be answerable to him. We can live amiably, if you accept that. I'd prefer us to be friends, so I would be happy if you accepted that. If you do not..." she shrugged. OOC: No, I changed something else. Rhaegar has been 17 since I designed the character. Rhaegar nodded. "I have no problems with that arrangement. However I intend living at our manse and your guards are not to interfere with my activities there. Nor will they interfere with my person or presume to give me orders. If you wish to converse with me, you will come and see me yourself."

"I reserve the right to refuse invitations from my equals and underlings as I see fit." said Rhaegar. "As long as you do not presume to think you can give me commands, then we should get on well. Friendship needs to be earned, not commanded."

"Likewise." said Rhaegar. "Despite the perception amongst some of my kin, I am not totally without friends." He studied her closely before adding. "Powerful friends."

Rhaegar gave a small mirthless smile. "You think I dont know that? The last three years have been illuminating. No-one can be fully trusted."

Rhaegar nodded wordlessly. The memory of his father's demise and the manner with which it was carried out, was still painful.

"Being friendless is a lonely condition, but still more desirable than the alternative. Some say we were fortunate not to be put to death."

"Life is not easy." said Rhaegar, lowering his eyes to stare absently at the wall, his mind full of images of his beloved dead dragon. "Some might say I have had it harder than most of my kin."
He raised his eyes to look at her. "A blade forged in the fire comes out harder and stronger and not as brittle. I have been through the fire, my lady and I hope I have become more like the fire-forged blade. Time will tell."

"It is always being tested." replied Rhaegar. "One has to try to be strong in the face of repeated insult and degradation."

Rhaegar nodded. "I know both my sisters' betrothed quite well." He crossed his arms and met her eyes. "I'm also told that you know one of them extremely well."

"So I am expected to marry another man's mistress, who moreover is with child by that man." said Rhaegar without obvious rancour. "A man who has made it clear that I am not to lay a finger on my wife. My sister in turn is expected to marry that man. While you are very comely, surely you must see how this is yet another insult heaped upon my head and that of my sisters."

"Maekar has made it clear that we are not to consummate our marriage and has also made it very clear that my death will follow shortly after." replied Rhaegar. "So consummating our marriage is out of the question."
He leaned back in his chair and draped a leg over one arm-rest. "Your other gifts? What, pray tell, are these?"

"Ahh yes, your dragon." Rhaegar said, knowing that was the real reason for Vira's sudden rise and understanding at the same time that the dragon could equally be used to cajole him into doing what Vira wanted.
"Still I fail to see how your dragon could be useful to me. I cannot ride it, even with your permission."

"An ally, my lady?" said Rhaegar a small wry smile breaking out on his face. "Against who?"

Rhaegar looked skeptical. "Against the King and his immediate family? They are the ones who have restricted my movements, refused to let me bond with a new dragon after losing mine in their service and ordered my marriage with a woman who is with child by another man. Along with a myriad of other degradations and insults over the last few years, not least the designation of 'traitorspawn'."
