The day after Maekar returns to the capital with Visenya and Vira in tow (with the knowledge that they would all be wed in less than a week's time), Maekar goes down into the city, armored in black oiled chianmail over black lacquered leather, all under his Inquisitor's cloak. His eye-patch is not black, but rather fashioned to look like a dragon's eye, giving him a strange but fearsome visage. Vigilance hangs at his hip, and the badge of his office is clearly displayed on his chest.
He makes his way down to the Street of Silk, and begins to quietly search for a Silk Merchant who goes by the name of Kern.

It's not difficult to find the establishment. Kern's shop is not particularly large but everything in it speaks of privilege and prosperity. Unsurprisingly, the members of Kern's staff know someone of rank when they see him, and hurriedly escort him to their master.
"My lord," said Kern. a fat man dressed in fine silks. "You honour me with your patronage."

Maekar nodded. "I am sure I do. Send your staff out for a moment, Master Kern," he said in a quietly dangerous voice that was unfailingly polite. "Give them the rest of the day off, in fact. I will compensate you for their wages, once I am satisfied with your answers to my questions," he added. Between the unadorned black badge on Maekar's chest and the black armor and cloak, it could not more obvious that he was a Knight Inquisitor of the crown.

The man's eyes widened and his face drained of colour but he did his best not to show fear. "Of course, ser."
He sent his people away and then he asked "Ask your questions if you must. I am a faithful servant of the crown."

"The son of Aenar is known to frequent your company," Maekar replied brusquely. "Don't bother denying it, I already know. I want to know what he discusses with you, and with whom else he associates."

"I have only met him once," Kern admitted. "i could not tell you about the prince's doings. I served his father once, that is all. He was hoping to make use of the acquaintance."

Maekar stared at the man for a long time before he nodded, finally. "Very well. If he returns, inform me of what he says to you; anyone or anything he mentions. His intentions, associates, resources. If you do not, I will know if it, and I will return… perhaps with my brother Trajan as well," he said menacingly. "Continue to meet with him, if he requests it, and do as he asks. If he asks treason of you, you may agree to aid him, but if you do not inform me immediately your will be considered an accomplice, do you understand?" he asked. The threat was clear, but also was the implication that if this man informed well on Rhaegar's doings, he would have the protection of the Inquisitor.

"I understand. Truth be told, I would prefer not to get involved at all." Kern began to wish he had gone somewhere far away. "He seems to be in the market for information, much like yourself, ser. Though he implied he was a good friend to the Crown Prince himself."

"I am quite sure he did, and truth be told, I do not care a whit about what you prefer," Maekar replied in a bored tone. "You will either do as I have instructed, or you and your family will be executed for treason to the crown. Have I made myself clear, Master Kern?"

But Kern drew himself up. "My lord, neither I nor my family have done any treason. Lord Rhaegar came to visit me of his own free will, not mine. I have made him no treacherous promises, I assure you. I will inform you if he says anything troublesome, of course, but so far he has not."

Maekar glowered down at the man. "That is irrelevant. When the son of a traitor came to this shop, you and your family all were drawn into his plots. You will do as I have instructed, or by all the Gods I swear you will live just long enough to see everyone you love die screaming."

Kern bows. "I am loyal to the crown, ser. I will do as you say."

Maekar smiled. "All is well then. Thank you for your time, Master Kern," he said, pulling a small pouch off his belt and tossing it to the silk merchant. When he caught it, the weight indicated that it was a substantial amount of silver.
The Inquisitor turned, and strode from the shop without another word.
