A few days after returning from the hunt, the king summoned Maekar to his chambers.

Maekar arrived promptly, Vigilance on his hip, favoring his right leg slightly. "Your grace," he said, bowing before the King when he arrived.

"Still fit for your post, Inquisitor?" he asked idly with a glance to his leg, echoing their last meeting. It was the closest His Grace typically came to a jest.

"A scratch, nothing more, your grace," Maekar replied, his expression neutral. "We follows a number of leads and one led to a nest of bandits but no further information. What does your grace require of me this day? I heard about my betrothal, and came to collect my bride, before returning to Darkheart."

"I need to know you are prepared for the ceremony and the duties that will follow." Maegor replied. "I intend to marry off Aenar's progeny by the month's end."
"You may be a lord now, but you are my inquisitor first. Do we have an understanding? I will have more use of you than ever in the coming months."

"I will do my duty, as required, your grace, and I will marry the lady Visenya tomorrow if you wish it, but the Maester suggested that Lady Vira not be moved for several weeks yet; she took a pair of wounds during the fight and is recovering at Darkheart," Maekar replied, frowning for a moment before resuming an impassive expression.
"I trust that your grace forgives my presumption, but it sounds as if your grace has something specific in mind," he added, choosing his words carefully.

"She can attend the ceremony in a stretcher for all I care, the ceremony will take place in two weeks time whether she is fit or not." he replied, leaving little room for negotiation.
"I simply need to know that you will do your duty, whatever is asked of you." was his enigmatic answer. "I will not live forever and that thought troubles me."

"I serve at the pleasure of the King," Maekar replied carefully. He recognized that the King's tone brooked no argument on the date of the wedding, and he wisely chose not to pursue that. The King's second answer was even more ominous than the first, and the wide-open implication was hardly unclear.
"I will return to Darkheart and arrange for Lady Vira to be brought to the capital. With your grace's permission, I would take custody of my own betrothed and take her with me for a few nights, before we return for the weddings," he said.

"If you watch her as dutifully as Trajan has watched his own betrothed, your request is granted." Maegor replied, the corners of his mouth turning up at the thought. "I would not become too attached to the girl." he added, though did not mention which one he was speaking of.

Maekar nodded. "It will be as you say, your grace," he replied. "We will return within a fortnight, and be wed."
He hesitated for a moment, and spoke again. "I will not try to impede your grace's edict, but the child she carries is mine, and I intend to claim it as such."

"The whore is pregnant then?" Maegor inquired, as if he had expected as much. "Excellent, all the more shame for Aenar's eldest son to have to raise my bastard as his own. Would you challenge my claim?"
He made the statement in the same air of finality with which he had declared the wedding date set in stone.

Maekar's face did not change, but the rage that radiated from him was nearly palpable. "No. Your grace," he replied, his fist clenched nearly to its breaking point at his side.

"Good, because you cannot afford distractions." he answered, meeting his son's eyes. "Not if you are to rule."

Maekar just stared at the King for a moment, his mouth agape. "Why?" he asked simply. The how of it was easy enough; if legitimized he would be the eldest of the King's sons, though he was not sure how his greatest dream of childhood was being handed to him. A decade of hunting traitors had created a suspicious man out of Maekar, and he waited carefully for the King's answer, suspecting a trap.

"Aegon cannot sit the throne. You know that as well as I." he replied with a tone as if he were discussing the weather. "He simply needs to sire an heir. Once he and Rhaena are wed, and an heir sired, I fear he will have outlived his usefulness."
"I will groom my grandson as my own grandsire did me, to ensure my work is carried on. Rhaena will inherit and require a consort. Your children will never sit the throne, but you will rule beside her. That will be your duty."

"Valyrian marriage rites do not allow for a marriage to be dissolved," Maekar said slowly, stating the obvious. "If your grace means me to kill Aenar's daughter that I might marry her grace, the Princess Rhaena, why require us to be wed in the first place? I cannot imagine your grace intends for me to take her grace, the Princess Rhaena as a second wife?" he asked, though he smiled slightly, presumably at the thought of being married to both of them.

"Because if there are no hiccups, it will looks as if it were planned." he replied. "I told you not to become attached to the girl for a reason and have wed Aenar's daughters to men I can trust to do what is necessary for the same reason. Now will you have the stomach to sit on this knowledge until it is time to act, or will you lose your nerve and act rashly as you did with Aemy?"

"I will do what is necessary, your grace," Maekar replied, steeling his gaze. "And I will not make the same mistake twice. Your grace has my word."

"Perhaps you do not remember," Maekar replied after a long moment of silence, "but I once asked you why I could not be King ahead of Aegon, and you beat me until I could not stand. I asked grandfather the same thing a month later and he beat me worse than you did. I will not be distracted."

"I remember that day well." Maegor answered, his voice low. "I was harder on you as my eldest son and it is because that day did not quash your ambition that I see you as the best man to protect what I have built and my daughter."
"The peasant girl is an anchor, not a prize." he reminded, with a knowing glance. "A punishment for the spawn of a traitor, not a prize for a dutiful son."

"It will be as you say, father," Maekar replied, not quite trusting himself to say more. His entire world had been upside down; two months ago there was nothing more he could have wanted out of life, but now… was Vira worth more than a crown?
"It will be as you say, your grace" he repeated, in a stronger, surer tone.

Maegor eyes were hard and critical, seeking out weakness in his words.
"Then you are dismissed." he finally said, seemingly content.
