Lord Rhaegar Targaryen hears a sharp knock on the door to his chambers, and a moment later it opens and Lord Maekar Dracaryn strides in. Rhaegar can see that his left leg is bandaged around the knee, and he is unarmored, dressed for court, though his sword hangs at his hip. "Lord Rhaegar," he said, with an incline of his head. "I would speak with you, for a moment," he added, shutting the door behind him, leaving his guards in the hallway.

Rhaegar was seated in a comfortable chair, reading a book, a habit that these days he regularly indulged himself, given the large amounts of inactivity he was forced to endure. This had been particularly true since the loss of Vermax and his return from Oldtown.
"Do come in." Rhaegar said a tinge of sarcasm in his voice. He did not rise from the chair he had been seated in, nor did he offer one to Maekar. He put down the book he had been reading and waited to see what his visitor wanted.

"Than you," Markar replied, eyeing the room with disinterest. "I am here to speak of your betrothed."
"His grace the King has ordered you to be wed, and of course his edicts will be obeyed, but Lady Vira belongs to me. You will not touch her, save by her consent, or you will have me to anwer to," he said, the barest hint of a threat in his voice. "Am I understood?

"Indeed?" replied Rhaegar, lounging back in his chair looking most unconcerned.
"And what is this Vira to you?"

"She is the mother of my child," Maekar replied pointedly. "If I hear from her that you laid even one finger on her without her permission, I guarantee that you will not be pleased with the result. If any harm whatsoever comes to my child before it is born, I swear by all the gods that you will envy your traitorous father's fate."

"A mother already?" replied Rhaegar sarcasm edging his voice. "I can well understand why you would be concerned Maekar. There's every chance that she'd fall in love with me shortly after we'd met, given my obvious charm, manners and good looks. But have no fear on that count. I have not the slightest interest in this Vira or the child."
He picked up his book. "Will that be all?"

"That is not my concern," Maekar replied, with the lazy confidence of a man who knew he would never be bested, at least in this area. "As I said, if I hear that you have laid even a single finger upon her without her permission, you will lose much more than that finger. If I have not made myself clear, this will be your only chance to make it so. I could slit your throat and dump you out of that window right now, and the King would not lift a finger to punish me. Bear that in mind, when you meet your betrothed," he added with a sneer, then he turned on his heel, and marched out the door.

Rhaegar went back to reading his book, not even watching his one handed, one eyed, bastard cousin leave his room. A small smile played around the edges of his mouth as he read. This was a most amusing story worth the re-telling later.
