Visenya hears a light knock on the door of her chambers, about six weeks after the Cuy Wedding.

Visenya called lazily for her visitor to be admitted from her position on the chaise. She had had visitors increasingly often of late, and barely glanced up from her reading when the door opened and closed. When she saw that it was Maekar, a grin broke across her face and she got quickly to her feet and ran across the room to greet him. The sheer silk of her violet bed gown trailed behind her like wings of gossamer. "Maekar, you've returned!" She cried excitedly. "Have you heard the news, then?"

"I have," Maekar replied, with a small smile, taking her into his arms. "I see that you are pleased by the match," he added, looking down at her with another smile. He was dressed finely in a doublet of black wool, trimmed with crimson and silver. His sword hung at his hip, and he wore a black eye patch with a tiny dragon stitched into the center with crimson thread.

"I am. I could do much worse, you know. I am fond of you, my lord," she added, standing on tiptoe to kiss his cheek. "Now, what has kept you away from court for so long? Come, have a glass of wine with me." She took his hand and made to lead him to her couch, where a half-drunk cup of wine already waited.

Maekar allowed himself to be led over to the couch, and he took a seat, pulling Visenya into his lap. "I am not displeased by the match," he replied, kissing her neck lightly. "I am rather fond of you as well, my lady Visenya, and I mean to ask the King's permission to return you to Darkheart with me when I fly back in several days; we have some time yet before we are to be wed."

She giggled as he pulled her onto his knee, putting her arms around his neck. "I should like to see your Keep firsthand. Will we live there once we marry, or will we stay in the city? I'll be able to take Silverwing, won't I?" She spoke quickly, as soon as the words came into her head.
"Oh, did you want wine?" She giggled. "I might like where I am too much to pour."

"I imagine that you shall; I have no intention of remaining in the city after we are wed. I must see to my seat, after all, though I will of course maintain a household in the capital as befits our station," Maekar replied. He allowed her to pour a goblet of wine, though he didn't pick it up and instead slipped his hand around her waist. "I am rather fond of you, lady Visenya, and so I must be honest with you from the beginning," he added quietly.

She sat up again after filling his glass and cuddled closely against him, pleased that things were going so well with her future husband. "I will be glad to be out of this castle and to have a household of my own at last."
She didn't seem ruffled by the change in his voice. "I am glad. A husband and wife should keep no secrets from eachother."

Maekar nodded. "My heart already belongs to another. I will be a dutiful husband to you and I will not shame you by flaunting her presence, but nor will I forsake her place in my heart," he said. "That is something you will have to accept."

Visenya went terribly still. "And who is it?" She asked in a tone suddenly grown cold. She freed herself from his embrace and stood. "Is it that peasant slut Vira?" She all but snarled at him, remembering Aegon, and how he has said almost the same words to her. Was she unworthy of love? Visenya bit back tears, certain that she must be, if this was so familiar a refrain. She turned her back on him and squeezed her eyes shut, squeezed her hands into fists, and pressed them against her eyes. She would not cry in front of him, no she could not.
"How dare you," she said in a whisper.

"I made no promise to you, Visenya," Maeker replied gently. "I have no desire to hurt you and I will marry you as his grace the King commands, but even he cannot command my heart. I will treat you as you deserve, and perhaps love you in time, but I did not choose this."
He stood, but allowed her to maintain her pride and to keep her back to him, and when he spoke again his voice was firmer, more commanding. "Do not mistake this for a request, my lady. You will accept this."

She turned back to him, eyes red with fury and despair. "No, men never do promise me a thing, do they? And yet i follow them so blindly." She laughed bitterly, wiping her face with the back of her hand.
"I can never accept someone else taking what is mine, Maekar, so cease telling me what I will and will not do."

"I think you forget who will be the husband, and who will be the wife, lady Visenya," Maekar replied in a dangerously soft voice. "You will do as you are told, and you will not refer to me as your property again. Someone cannot take from you what you never possessed."

"You mistake me, my lord," she said bitterly, emphasizing the 'my lord', "I had thought your affection mine, not necessarily your person. But thank you, so kindly, for reminding me that not even that was ever mine."

Maekar sighed, and he stepped up Visenya, placing a gentle hand on her cheek. "You have my affection, my lady, but that is not something that can be yours alone," he said, his voice softening. "I do not mean to treat you poorly, or to shame you either publicly or privately. Your life has been a hard one; I make it no easier, and I am sorry for that. Regardless of what I feel for any other, it shall be you who becomes Lady of my seat, and it shall be your sons who inherit my title after me."

She turned her face away from him, the tears beginning at last to fall. Kindness was not what she wanted. She wanted anger to match her anger, harsh words to combat her own words. "At least there is that," she said, not pleased but still more accepting than she had been before.
She managed to meet his eyes again, tilting her face up toward him. Her face was streaked with black, her tears having caught the kohl around her eyes and on her lashes and made tracks down her cheeks. "Why, though?" she managed to say, not sure she wanted his answer. "Don't you think I'm beautiful?"

"I do not know why," Maekar replied quietly, gently wiping the tracks of makeup from her cheeks with his thumb. "If we were able to choose, it would not be love."
"You are a beautiful woman, my lady, and it will be my honor to have you on my arm, to have you rule my castle, and bear my children. I do not know what I may grow to feel for you, nor you for I, but in time we shall find out together," he said, bending his neck to kiss her lightly on the lips.

She kissed him back hard, throwing her arms around his neck, and holding him bent to her level. "Fuck me, then," she whispered, the quaver of tears still in her throat, "Give me your son tonight, and we can talk of...of her...tomorrow." Her eyes were sad and imploring, but her mouth was warm and she trembled as she pressed herself against him.
