A squat ugly castle, Darkheart Keep is nonetheless extremely defensible, sitting atop a bluff between the two forks of the Wendwater river in the northern Kingswood. The north and west are protected by thirty-foot cliffs. with the river beneath them, while the ground beneath the east wall slopes sharply down toward the forest that has been cut back several hundred yards to provide a clear view of the approach. Siege machinery could be pushed up the hill and against the twenty-five foot curtain wall, but the approaching enemy would be constantly open to arrows and javelins launched from the walls and they would be exhausted by the time they reached them.
Darkheart's only gatehouse is on the south face, where the hill is much gentler; the gatehouse is a square pair of towers on either side of the gate, which boasts a double portcullis lined with dozens of murder holes.
