Leaning lightly on a crutch and looking very careworn and tired, Elseyris knocked on her sister's door.
"Visenya? Are you there?"

Visenya was lounging on her chaise, drinking and reading a romance. She was dressed in a sheer robe over a slinky burgundy gown. She recognized her sisters voice and called out for her to come in.
When she laid eyes on her sister, she was shocked ather appearance and sat up suddenly. "Elsey! You look terrible! Seat yourself immediately!" Her eyes followed Trajan, her sisters shadow, as he filed in behind.

Elsey flopped into the offered seat, setting the crutch against the arm. She ran a hand through her unbound hair.
"I feel terrible, Visenya. I don't know what's wrong, but I feel like all my energy is just draining away. I'm going to see the Grand Maester in a little while, to see if he can help. I hope you are faring well."

Visenya frowned. "Oh, poor dear." She set aside her book and moved to place her hand on her sister's forehead. "You don't feel feverish. I hope it isn't an infection or anything. Perhaps I have some cosmetics that might brighten your complexion a little." She hurried to her vanity and began sorting through the various bottles and jars there.
"As for me, I am well enough. I fear I have been more lucky in my match than you have. Lord Maekar and myself have an understanding."

Elsey wrinkled her nose at the suggestion of cosmetics, which she didn't like wearing. She didn't want to argue with her sister though.
"It seems everyone has been luckier than I, but I am told that I am to make the best of it nonetheless. I doubt anyone would say the same if it were them."
She tilted her head in confusion;
"What do you mean by 'understanding'?"

Visenya found the little pot of rouge that she had been searching for and presented it to her sister with a smile. "Here, this should bring the glow back to your cheeks!"
Her smile remained glued where it was, even as she ontinued, "I am sure anyone would try their best, at least. Do we really have to talk about him as though he isn't present? I find that difficult. Trajan, you may have some wine if you wish." She didn't look at him, even as she spoke, gesturing to the collection of wines on the table against the far wall.
"As for Maekar and myself, well, he took me flying. We have been friends since that day."

"I suppose we don't have to," said Elsey, flatly, wondering why Visenya was suddenly being civil to Trajan. She'd seen her sister glare and snap at him several times before.
"It is good that you have found friendship with your betrothed. Given the King's contempt for us, that is probably the best one could hope for. I hope he will make you happy. I hear Darkheart Keep is a nice place."
Elseyris could feel the tightness of anxiety in her chest, as she searched for words.
"Visenya, I want to apologize to you. From our last meeting, it is clear to me that I have hurt you, I think I know why, and I am very sorry. I have never wanted or intended to do so. I can explain, if you want me to, but what is most important to me is that I make amends. How can I make things right?"
Elsey looked earnestly at her sister, her eyes tearful.

"I hope to make my home there and to run my own household. It will be lonely away from the Keep, but a pleasant change from having everyone constantly breathing down my neck, I think. Assuming the King will allow us to go, that is." She opened the pot of rouge and began to dab it onto her sisters cheeks with a practiced hand. "Hold still, please."
She smiled as she worked. "I believe that as we are both about to be married, and that all three of the parties involved are unable to unite with their preferred partners, perhaps it should be put behind us. It has been said that time heals all wounds, does it not? We are still sisters, after all. Oh, don't cry, you'll smudge the makeup!"

Elsey fought back the tears, and tried to hold herself still, though she fidgeted with her pendants.
"I would like to have the past behind us, though I am afraid for the future. Everything is so overwhelming right now. I have been fraught for so long about seeing you, fearing your wrath. I..."
She trailed off, not knowing what else to say.

Visenya gave a last dab of the pigment and stepped back to survey her work. It had blended almost seamlessly into the apples of Elsey's cheeks, giving her a healthier, rosier look. She went for a hand mirror to save her sister from getting up. "Did you feel guilty, sister?"
She handed her sister the mirror. "Never mind that now. Don't fear me. There are much worse things in this world than a jealous sister."

"Once I realised that you had cared more than I thought, yes, I did. It did not occur to us at the time that we would be hurting anyone, and we neither could change our hearts besides, but now that I know harm was done, I bear a regret for causing you that harm. I can only ask for your absolution."
She took the mirror, but did not look at her reflection.
"I would rather not have you be jealous of me, for your own sake as well as mine. A grudge is like a stone in the shoe. Besides, I am in one of the least enviable positions of us all at the moment."
Elsey took Visenya's hand gently, looking up at her with eyes full of sadness and apology.

Finally Visenya frowned. "I thought I told you. Before you went, I told you what I wanted. I know the forgetfulness that comes with the moment, but there is no way you can deny knowing my attachment." After staring at her for a moment, she shrugged. "But it seems a lifetime ago rather than mere months, does it not? You're forgiven." She waved a hand in absolution as if everything was erased in that gesture.
The smile returned to her face. "You must look, Elsey. See how pretty I've made you look." She squeezed her sisters hand and took the mirror in her other, guiding it up in front of Elsey's face.

"I had thought it ambition rather than feeling, but, as always, I got it wrong," said Elsey, softly, Visenya's frown making her feel more anxious. "None of us may choose with whom we fall in love, and as much as it has pained me to know we hurt you, we cannot change our hearts."
At Visenya's handwave, Elsey bowed her head. "Thank you. Your forgiveness means a lot to me."
She finally looked at her reflection, as Visenya held the mirror up. She did look significantly better, though she still felt awful inside.
"You are very good at that, Visenya. I look less like a ghost now."
She squeezed her hand in return, her eyes sad but loving.

Visenya barked a laugh. "Why do all my siblings accuse me so much of ambition?" She shook her head, inking of the words she had exchanged with Rhaegar not so many nights past. "But you're right, one cannot change ones heart. It was worse to be refused than to have my heart broken, I think. You are lucky, little sister. He is honorable to the core. Perhaps he is the last such man in all of Weesteros."
She pressed the jar of rouge into her sisters hand and hugged her. "We must have you warm and living, my dear. Keep it."

"I didn't mean any accusation," Elseyris said hurriedly, realising she had spoken incorrectly again. "I should stop trying to explain myself, before I make more of a mess. I just misunderstood, that's all I meant."
She held the jar tightly between her hands, turning it slightly, watching the powder sift to one side.
"I hope he is not the last man like that, this world needs more of them. Truly, Visenya, he is the best man that I know, and we love eachother so much. While I do not feel terribly lucky right now, given my new confines, I live in hope that both of us will see happier futures soon. I do not know Lord Maekar well, but he seems like a decent enough man. I'm sure he'll treat you well."

"No, no, Elsey, it's just that Rhaegar thinks that there is nothing else that drives me other than ambition. It hurts me. I never thought anyone could be as blind as he is." She sniffed in disapproval.
"I hope he does, and I hope he ceases his carrying on with that peasant wench Vira. It would amuse me to have Rhaegqr in horns but I would not have my husband touching another woman. As for love," she paused, going pink in her cheeks, "maybe I will love him." From the way she began to toy with her curls it was clear that she was at the very least infatuated with her betrothed.

"I do not think you are driven only by ambition," said Elseyris, softly. "I try to tell him that you two need not quarrel so, but he has been so cold for so long. I tried to talk him into making amends with you, but he seems unconvinced of the merit of that. I wish we could all be friends."
Elsey watched the way Visenya played with her hair, and smiled.
"What does Mother think of your match?"

"I tried to make amends, but he would not have it. He spent the whole time insulting me. He is a waste of time, Elsey. Not just mine, everyone's." She waved her hand again in dismissal. "As for Maekar, I haven't exactly talked to mother about the engagement, but she warned me off him when I came back from flying. She seemed to think I couldn't trust him."

Elsey let out a heavy sigh;
"I am sorry he insulted you. I won't push the issue, and I won't take sides, but if you two ever wish to try again at working things out, I would like to help. As for Mother, well, she doesn't think we should trust anyone, so I am not surprised. Perhaps she will come around if she sees you safe and happy though."

She laughed. "Oh Elsey, you always did see the best in everyone. Perhaps that will help you with your future husband." It was clear she did not intend to be rude, but she was just the same.
"I think mama's judgement might have been clouded by my ruined gown," she said coyly, rearranging her skirts on her lap. "She didn't ask too many questions and I distracted her my urging her to take a lover. Perhaps that Braavosi fellow, he seems charming." Her eyes searched her sisters face, then, wanting to ask if he had visited her as well, but refraining due to Trajan's presence. She wondered if she would ever be able to have an honest conversations with her sister ever again.

"Perhaps it will. I find that looking for the good in others brings out the good in me too," said Elsey, with a warm smile, despite suspecting that it would be difficult to find much good in Trajan.
"Ah, so you have met him too. He heard I was confined to bed rest, and brought me an enormous poetry book to read. It was very thoughtful of him," Elsey smiled. "A nice man, though no match for me at cyvasse."

"Poetry? I did not take him for one who enjoyed poetry," she said with a smile. "But yes, that was thoughtful. I am glad I encouraged mother to take him to her bed. He is very handsome, and she deserves to have some nights of pleasure after mourning for so long, don't you agree?"

"I am not sure if he himself is a lover of poetry, but he seemed to know that I was. I have long hoped that Mother would find someone to make her happy again, though I did not know that she was involved with him."
Elseyris shrugged and smiled.
"As long as she is happy, that is what matters. I just hope he doesn't break her heart."

"He is a very knowledgeable man. I think he would be good for her." Visenya repeated. "And she doesn't trust enough to give her heart, so I feel that it will not be so easily broken."
She laughed and reached for her cup of wine. "I should learn from our mother, it seems."

"Perhaps, and perhaps me too, though I believe a heart that hurts is yet a heart that works. If we bar our hearts from pain, we also bar them from joy. You are so loving and good, sister, I would hate to see you become hardened and cold. The greatest thing about us as human beings is our ability to endure, transcend, and be more than our suffering. Besides, you will soon be a Ladyship, you are moving up in the world. That is cause for rejoicing, is it not? I must get you something nice as a gift."
Elsey smiled warmly at Visenya, giving her hand a reassuring squeeze.
