Elseyris had rarely felt so nervous as she waited to be admitted into the King's presence. Her thoughts were a whirling morass, through which she tried to beseech the Gods.
Mother, let him be merciful. Warrior, let me be strong in the face of danger. Wise Crone, guide my words. Blessed Gods above, I am your devoted servant. Let me win the only true prize of my heart.

She made to wait what felt an eternity before being allowed entrance, King Maegor inspecting her with cold violet eyes.

She knew that he could smell fear and flattery a mile away, so she simply entered quietly, and bowed, without flourishing or fumbling;
"Your Grace. Thank you for receiving me."
As she rose, she met his piercing gaze, and took a step towards the desk.

"We almost did not." he replied dismissively. "Speak quickly. We have little enough time as it is, less for Aenys' progeny."

"I seek Your Grace's leave to travel to Dragonstone, escorted, of course, in order to tame a new dragon."

"Perhaps I prefer your wings clipped." Maegor replied, clearly finding some relish in this moment. "Dead dragons seem to follow in the wake of your bloodline."

"A dragon dead in a duel, borne of my father's foolishness, drunkenness and pride, is not the same as a dragon that dies bravely in battle against the enemies of the realm, including the Dragonbane himself."
Elseyris fought the urge to fold her arms defensively.
"I renounced my father long ago. I wish I had not been his daughter, for many reasons. I have fought loyally for the Realm and will continue to serve it. I swore a solemn oath to your son, which I will honour until my last breath. What more must I do to prove that I am not an enemy?"

"Dead is dead." Maegor intoned. "You are not my enemy, you foolish child. You are my trophy. You, your sister, your brother, and your mother are of more use to me as a symbol than you will ever be as leal servants of the realm. You are the weakness of Queen Rhaenys' bloodline made manifest for all to bear witness: a daily reminder of a traitor's folly."

"My! You prize me higher than I thought! I am flattered!"
Elsey's anger flared, before she could catch herself in her sarcasm. She quickly followed her response, with a calmer voice;
"If all you want to do is have us around as trophies, then surely a trophy with a dragon is more impressive. Having control over a person is easy, it doesn't demonstrate your might nearly as much as having control over a dragonrider."

"The next time you open your mouth, I would remind yourself what a disservice you father's tongue did him." he replied coldly, addressing her outburst with a glance that Trajan had clearly inherited.
"It is said that the Valyrians were shepherds before they became dragonlords. I think that perhaps your line carries the last remnants of the weakness of that legacy. You and your kin belong in the muck with the sheep, not the air with the dragons. I will spare no more for your inferior stock."

Elseyris listened to his venomous retort, and while she wanted nothing more that to leap across the desk and thrust his letter opener into his neck, she closed her arms around herself, her head bowed a little, her voice much quieter;
"I...apologise, unreservedly, Your Grace. I did not mean to seem scornful. I am honoured to be permitted to live as part of this great Realm that you rule. I merely wished to express that my bonding with a new dragon would add to your power, and make me useful to you. Please forgive my unworthy behaviour, and allow me another chance to show you that I am ever your loyal servant."
She didn't look up, but her face was convincingly cowed.

"Now you sound like your mother." he replied sardonically. "Your father groveled too before the end. Another trait of weak blood, I suppose."
"I have spoken and my words and carry more weight than wind." he intoned. "Your service means nothing to me and I have made your use quite clear. Serve in the muck with the rest of the sheep."

Elseyris was boiling with rage inside, but maintained her outward stillness;
"So, is there truly nothing I can do to please Your Grace?"

"You could remove yourself from our sight." he replied sharply. "That would be a fine start."

"As you wish," she replied curtly, and stormed out.
She still held back her rage and despair as she strode down the corridors, heading straight for her own rooms. Only when she was in privacy would she let go.
