When Maekar returns to the capital, he learns that he has been summoned to a private audience with the King. He makes his way to the King's solar promptly, and has the guards announce his arrival. His left arm is no longer in a sling, and the white bandages can still be seen covereing the stump, poking out of the end of his sleeve. He has replaced the bandages over his right eye with a black eye-patch, in the center of which a tiny dragon has been embroidered in red thread.

His expression was dark as he saw his son's ravaged face and appendage.
"The Inquisitors serve as my hands and eyes in places and cannot be." he remarked. "Yet you have lost one of each."

Maekar met his father's gaze with his one remaining eye, his back straight and his face of iron. "I think you shall find the quality of my service will be undiminished, your grace," he replied evenly.

"I certainly hope not." Maegor replied. "We cannot afford weakness at this time, nor rest on our laurels."

"I hardly have the laurels to rest on anyway," Maekar replied dryly. "It was his grace the Prince's actions that won the day, he who led us to victory."

"Yet you wear the Dragonbane's sword." the king mused. "My heir may have his faults, but like myself he never struck me as the type to award boons lightly. Humility has its place, but not when boldness would better suit."

"I did my duty to your house, your grace, no more than that. The Prince of Dragonstone was generous to award me with such a weapon," Maekar replied. He paused for a moment before continuing. "Everyone named on the list that your grace sent with Trajan has been killed."

"It is time that devotion to duty was rewarded." Maegor asserted, clearly already aware that his orders had been carried out. "Darkheart Keep is in need of a lord, after Lord Toyne's untimely demise. I am of mind to bestow it upon you."

Maekar nodded impassively. "If that is your grace's wish, I would be honored to serve the throne so," he replied evenly.

"Dozens have petitioned me for the keep and many more sycophants salivate in the wings for it, yet it is my bastard that treats the post with apathy." he remarked. "Why is that?"

"All I have and all I might gain are by your grace's sufferance. I am entitled to nothing and while I am pleased to be raised to a Lord, I know that it is only by your grace's will. What else can I do, but serve loyally for so long as the crown requires my service?" He asked, though the question was somewhat rhetorical.

"That is a fine sentiment in the public eye, but you are not Trajan." he replied. "You have too much of my blood to be devoid of ambitions of your own."

"Any ambition on my part would be a threat to Aegon, father," he replied, dropping some of the formality. "I would not seek to divide our house so, for my own ends."

"Then it is my Crown you envy?" he inquired, studying his natural son. "It is no wonder that a lordship leaves you wanting then."

"My blood is of Valyria just all of your grace's children, even if the laws of this land prohibit me from bearing your grace's name," Maekar replied carefully. "As far above the common people of this land that your grace is, the Gods are above us, and it was by their mere whim that your grace's heir and I were born as we are. What man could not covet a crown, when it is so close and yet so far from his grasp?"
He let the question hang in the air for a moment, before speaking again. "I know my duty, and my place. I would not act to make it so, to the detriment of House Targaryen."

"Do you think you would make a more worthy bearer of my legacy than your brother?" Maegor asked, countenance impassive.

"Saying so would make me unworthy, your grace," Maekar replied. "His grace the Prince saved my life in Oldtown, for the Dragonbane would have killed me if not for his intervention. Your grace's legacy falls to Aegon by right, regardless of my opinion or ability."

"I am sure my grandsire made similar claims about his own brother and Crown Prince Jahaerys before the time came." the king remarked. "Do try to show more gratitude for you appointment outside these chambers. Many will question the bestowal of the keep to a bastard, especially one with so much blood on his hands...hand now." he corrected.

"As you say, your grace," Maekar replied, with a nod. "When I have set Darkheart to rights and established my rule there, I ask your grace's permission to hunt down those of the Faith who yet escaped our forces at Oldtown, or who were not present at the battle to be killed with their fellows. Rumors place a few of them within a few days' flight from the capital, and only when they are dead will this war be well and truly finished."

Maekar nodded, and withdrew, assuming that if the King had anything further to say, he would have done so.
