"You may," he replied, raising an eyebrow.

She wasted no time on further delay. "Do you dream of marrying Rhaena, as if you were a trueborn prince?"

Maekar opened his mouth, and then closed it. "Does it matter? I never will," he said finally.

"You underestimate yourself," she said. "And you underestimate the king. I doubt Rhaena wishes to marry Aegon, or he her. Yet she is the king's eldest daughter now, and she must marry someone."

"It does not matter who she wishes to marry; if the King orders her to marry the Prince of Dragonstone, or the Lord of Storm's End, or Lord Arryn's heir, she will do so; what other choice will there be?" Maekar replied
"The Princess will marry someone, but it will not be a crippled bastard with a few hides of land and a manor," he added.

"I do not believe your sister will marry against her will. Every one of my grandchildren is stubborn. But you know, perhaps the king will legitimise you, one day."

Maekar rolled his eye, fighting the urge to scratch the itch in his empty socked, and scoffed. "That is ridiculous, grandmother. I am older than Aegon. Legitimizing me is tantamount to disinheriting his trueborn son in favor of his bastard, and would divide the realm into rebellion, for surely Aegon would not merely stand aside for such an occurrence, nor would Lords Arryn and Lannister forsake him, who love him well. The Hero of Oldtown," he added bitterly. "His victory would have ended in ash, but for my preparations."

"I believe you," she said. "Yet it was his dragon who slew the Dragonbane, they say. That is most unfortunate for you. And yet, Aegon follows the false gods of the Andals. Do you think your father forgets that? I doubt he wishes to think of the realm sworn to the false gods after he is gone."

"Even he has no choice in that. That is a law Andals and Valyrians, and even the Rhoynar and the First Men have in common, Maekar replied. "Aegon will be king, short of his premature death."

Laena frowned. "I am sure your father could find a way out of the situation, should he choose to do so. I know I would. I mean no harm to Aegon, of course, but I wish he might be persuaded to follow the true gods. And you are as much Targaryen as any of us, no matter your name."

"I will not be King, nor will I marry Rhaena, however much I might wish so," Maekar replied, "and I would be a fool to ever hope for such a day."

"And yet you would make an admirable king, were it possible," she remarked. "You are stronger than your brother."

"Take that up with the Gods then, it was they that decided our birth," he replied. "It is pointless to dream of what will not be," he said again.

Laena smiled. It was a rare occurrence for her. "Perhaps that is exactly what I shall do. As that I, what use is life without dreams, Maekar? They are what keeps us alive."

"Certainly, a man is nothing if he dreams for nothing, but dreams of things that have no hope of being are foolishness, and will only lead to madness," he insisted with all the surety of a twenty-five year old.

"Perhaps you are wise to aim low. For now. But then I do not know it is to be bastard born, only through yourself and dear Taena. It is not the same. But remember, Maekar, you are much loved and you have earned your place in this family. It is a mere accident of the gods that you and Aegon hold the positions you hold within this family."
Yet she had never made a secret of her wish that their roles were reversed, not with Maekar.

"If wishes were horses, beggars would ride," he said, repeating the saying she had often told him when he was a child, wishing for a life beyond a bastard's station.

"Indeed." The corners of her mouth turned up just a little. "Look after yourself, Maekar, and your sister too."
