Though significantly smaller than the apartments allocated to the Prince and Princesses, as the quarters appropriated for Ser Maekar of Dragonstone are still comfortable and well furnished. Located in the south wing of Maegor's Holdfast, his room consists of a central sitting-room that connects to the corridors, as well as an adjoining bedroom and a private solar as well, with a balcony that looks south over the river and the Kingswood. The sitting room is furnished with several chairs around the fire place on one side, and a table on the other, which tends to be covered in maps and figurines and weapons and other random clutter. On the walls are eight shields, each taken from men he slew during his campaigns; five them are round shields, made of light wood with a sheet of bronze over the entire face and a thicker strip of it banding the rim, made in the style popular among Dornish warriors, while the other three are proper kite shields, of heavy oak and banded with steel commonly used by knights in the Reach and the Stormlands, and also by the Warrior's Sons. Several are scorched, broken, or split in some way, legacies of the fights in which Maekar took them as trophies, and any who enter the room would instantly recognize the arms of Lords Toland and Jordayne, as well as three variations of the Martell sun-and-spear indicating three lesser sons of the Martell line. The three kite shields each bear variations of swords and seven-piointed stars, indicating that their wielders had been of the Warrior's Sons.

Maekar sends a page to his grandmother's apartments, inviting her to visit her favorite grandchild at her convenience.

Laena arrived after a short delay. She came in a black silk gown with a black lace overlay and Maekar saw, as he so often did, a softening in the Dowager's usually frosty expression. And then surprise as she saw his eyepatch and stump.
"My dear," she said, embracing him. "Who did this to you?"

Maekar rose smoothly and embraced his grandmother when he arrived, giving her a kiss on the cheek, and gesturing for her to sit. He had a tray of various teas on a small round table that was between the chairs, though on the end table beside the chair he had been sitting in when she entered (on the right side of it, obviously) there sat a decanter and a glass, both filed with bourbon.
"Good morning, grandmother," he said.
"This was the Dragonbane," he added, raising his left arm. Maekar was well dressed in a black tunic, though the white bandages covering his stump could be seen poking out of the end of his left sleeve, and he was wearing his now-customary black eye-patch with the red dragon embroidered in the center.
"The eye was shrapnel, from one of those exploding ballistae they had. Tyraxes was speared on their chained harpoon," he said, assuming that she'd at least heard the bare bones of the Faith's weapons on the Hightower, "and Cyrax took took two blasts in the back from ballistae before we were able to free them, and a splinter of metal pierced my helm."

"Unfortunate," she replied with a little sigh. "But war is dangerous, and you at least survived, unlike your grandsire. Are you healing well? I will be happy to offer my expertise if you should need it, though I cannot give you a new hand or a new eye."

"Can you not," Maekar said softly, half to himself. "I rather thought you might be able to, but it is of no matter, I suppose," he added after a short pause, smiling confidently. The casual observer or courtier would not noticed, but someone as familiar with Maekar as the King's mother could see that it was mostly a facade.
"How was your time in the capital? Not too exciting, I hope? We heard a queer tale about a Septon being murdered, though I imagine it could not have been more than a rumor by the time it reached us in the Reach."

"Oh, yes. He was just a septon, though," she said dismissively. "I will not pretend I mourned for such a man. I loathe their Seven Gods. Truth be told, the capital was deadly dull. Your cousin Adara took some common girl claiming to be dragonseed for her companion but the wench disappeared. And a new sorceress has come to court, which may upset the Qartheen girl, but that is all."
She sat looking at him. "Maekar, the gods give and the gods take away. That is the way of it. It grieves me to see your wounds. Had I been able to consult the great books stored in Oldtown, it might have been possible to...do many things that we can only dream of. But Rhaena tells me the maesters burned all such books that might have been useful to me. Even should I go to Oldtown to search for myself, it is likely I will find no more than a few scraps of knowledge. Your eye I can do nothing about, but have you considered fashioning a hand of gold or silver?"

Maekar waved his hand dismissively. "False hands hold no interest for me. Perhaps this new sorceress can yet do something for me," he said with a shrug. "My hand was taken by no god, it was taken by a man. Perhaps a man, or a woman, can give it back. Those fucking Maesters took many secrets to their grave, but I do not know if they possessed any secrets of sorcery beyond the making of their strange explosive liquid. Their wonders were of timber and steel, not shadows and blood."

"I had always believed the Citadel possessed secrets of sorcery and blood magic," Laena remarked. "Though I could be wrong, of course. Any such books would have been kept locked away, if they exist at all. And yet it is said our own ancestors in Valyria possessed much magic that was lost during the Doom. I have spent much time researching such matters, though I have few enough books on the subject. Perhaps we can help one another."

"What are you talking about?" Maekar asked. "Help with what? You just said you could do nothing for me," he added with a frown.

"No," sad Laena. "I said I could do nothing for you now. I can do many things but growing back a man's hand is not one of them. But it is my belief that the old people of Valyria knew much that we do not. Magic was said to be common in Valyria, far more so than it is for us. Yet it seems to be making a reappearance in our family now. That can be no accident." She smiled, just for an instant.
"As a young woman I read a portion of an old book, once, in the library at Dragonstone, a fragment of what had likely been a larger text. It spoke of an ancient library once ruled over by the lords of Valyria, a treasure house of knowledge. It is not known what became of that knowledge when Valyria fell."
She looked at him with a serious expression.. "Our lives have been dominated by this war so it was not possible to investigate this matter. But the war is over now. I am an old woman now yet it is my goal to seek out the Library of Elyria and determine if any of its knowledge yet remains to us. If so, we might learn secrets that would be to our benefit. Mayhaps even the way to grant you a new hand or replace your eye."

"Valyria?" Maekar asked skeptically. "There is naught there but smoke rising from the sea, and cursed broken ruins. What you possibly hope to learn there?"

"How do you know?" Laena challenged. "Have you ever had leisure to fly there? They say the ruins are haunted by demons, but that is surely the work of superstitious folk. I don't believe it. The ruins are worth a visit, I believe. We might learn much and more about how our ancestors lived, and it may even be that we will find some knowledge lost to the centuries."

"Ships have been disappearing in those waters for two centuries, and they cannot possibly be deep enough to be home to a kraken or leviathan to be attacking ships, and I highly doubt that pirates would be so efficient as to never be discovered, for two centuries. What else could it be?" he asked. "Rhaena wants to go to Valyria, I think. She's not said it outright, but I suspect that is what she wants."

"No doubt she hopes, as I do, that we may learn from our past," she said. "I shall invite her to accompany me on my quest. You would be most welcome too, if you can bear to put your faith in old magic and an old lady who wishes only to see you well."

"I… do not think Rhaena would want me to accompany you. Besides, I would not wish to infringe upon her independence; it is something of which she is very protective," Maekar said, smiling fondly at the thought.

"So she is," She gave him a sharp look. "Try to have faith in us, Maekar. I know that is hard for a man such as yourself, who puts his faith in steel and dragonfire, but, unless this new sorceress knows something I do not, the scrolls and books of old Valyria may be your only hope to be as you were. It is more than most men who lose a hand can hope for."

Maekar noted her expression but did not comment on it. "I have faith in you both, of course, but I cannot but hope to find a new hand. How else can I be of any use to… anyone, if I do not? A one-eyed man might continue to serve the crown, but what can a man do with only one hand?"
"I can barely handle this, and it is made of one handed use," Maekar replied, laying his hand on Vigilance's dragonbone hilt. He hadn't removed the crystal pommel, in the shape of a seven pointed star, and the sword lay on the table next to his chair.

"A pretty thing, for a sword," she remarked, trailing her fingers down the blade. "You are fortunate to possess this blade. Tell me what you know about Rhaena's...abilities."

She was still looking at the sword. "Sorcery can be as dangerous as a sword, and it can harm its wielder if they are not taught to wield it correctly. It is my hope that the knowledge of old Valyria may be able to help Rhaena. She needs to learn to control her skills."

"She knows that she has but to ask, and I would follow her to the end of the world and assist any way that I could," Maekar replied. "I fear she is somewhat resentful of my help, when it is given unasked."

"Yes. Well, I cannot blame her for that. She seeks to be as independent as any man. You of all men should understand that, bastard as you are. You have striven to achieve great things despite your circumstances. i believe Rhaena wishes to do the same though many would deny her on account of her sex."
She put a hand on his shoulder.
"Do not tell her I spoke to you of Valyria, unless you change your mind and wish to come. It is best if the matter is not spoken of in public. We cannot have all and sundry sailing or flying to Valyria."

She smiled and hugged him. "My love, may I ask you a bold question"?
Maekar knew that it was a measure of her affection for him that she asked rather than simply asking the question.
