Near the Kings Landing harbor stands a stout structure which houses the office of the Master of Ships, currently Lord Paxter Redwyne. The office itself is richly detailed in dark woods and brass. A massive ornate oak desk dominates the room, notable for being carved from the hull of the ship of Lord Daemon Velaryon, the first Master of Ships, the same flagship which had brought Aegon the Conqueror's army to the shores of Westeros. The room is littered with naval instruments and tidal maps line the walls. A window overlooks Blackwater Bay, with a line of sight to the mighty war galleys of the Royal Fleet.

Baelon Waters turned up at the office a few days after his wedding. He was well dressed, and seemingly sober for once. He waited outside after requesting an audience from an attendant.

He is allowed entry after a short period, servants coming to and fro, presumably to get the office to Lord Redwyne's liking. The office his cluttered with crates containing Paxter's personal effects, but the man seems quite comfortable behind the great oak desk of his new station.
"Congratulations on your nuptials." he said, in greeting. "My apologies for not attending the ceremony. The winds were not in our favor and we just recently arrived. How can I help you?"

"Thank you, my lord. No worries on that count, I certainly understand the vagaries of wine and tide." Baelon told the man as he took a seat. "I had a proposal for you. Gainful employment for some of our fleet, now that the war is done."

"Gainful employment?" he inquired. "You mean besides protecting our shipping lanes?"

"Protecting our shipping lanes is precisely what I mean. We've been at war for decades. Our fleet is more used to raiding shipping out of Oldtown and the Arbor - meaning no offense - than they are with defending our own trade. If we are to get this realm back on its feet again, trade is a necessity." Baelon pointed at a map on the wall. "Most of our foreign trade consists of that with Dorne, and the Free Cities. Much of this requires passing through or near the Stepstones, of course a renowned haven for pirates. I would propose the formation of a squadron of vessels intended to root out these ne'er do wells, and bring them to justice."

"There is much to take care of first, but that is a fine notion." Redwyne commended.
"Is that all?" he asked pointedly, clearly expecting Baelon's idea was self-serving in some manner.

"Well, the obvious choice for commander of such a squadron would be someone who knows how pirates think. Someone with experience in piracy himself." Baelon leaned back in his seat. "Myself, to put it plain."

"The obvious choice you say?" Redwyne inquired. "Your confidence is commendable, but having witnessed your prowess in battle firsthand, I would say it is misplaced."
"By the way, how is your dragon?" he asked, pointedly. "I took no pleasure in shooting such a beautiful creature from the sky."

"Seaskimmer is doing quite well, thank you," Baelon replied, seemingly unperturbed, "Took him out to fly a bit this morning. And there's really no need to try and goad me, Lord Bloodwyne. I've admired your work from afar for some time. Alas, when we met, I was not in my native element. Ironborn are notoriously hard to command, especially when outnumbered."

"A good commander knows he is only as strong as his weakest soldier." Redwyne countered. "A poor commander uses it as an excuse. So save the excuses, as well as your flattery. No sane man in the Seven Kingdoms would have put gold on my victory or envied my position in that battle."
"Why should I risk any portion of the fleet to your command?"

Baelon grinned at that. "There's no need to risk a portion of the fleet. I would use ships and men offered by houses which could be persuaded to support such a measure. I've already secured that of House Velaryon, and of course my new House Cuy. All that I would require is approval from the King and his Small Council."

"Then I am not sure why you came to me." Redwyne replied. "If His Grace approves the venture, I will be the last to turn down the prospect of less pirates with minimal risk incurred."

"I only wished to ensure you would be in favor of it, should it be brought up within the Small Council. And if I could have gotten a few ships out of you, well," He shrugged, "all the better."

"A lord must stand on his own two feet, as you will soon learn I am sure." Redwyne replied. "Do well in this and perhaps we will have more reason to speak in the future."

"I look forward to it." Baelon answered. He rose from his seat and left the office.
