Covered in blood, an unsmiling Rhaegar Targaryen returned to his tent to change his clothes after his visit to Battle Island. Still in command of the heavy infantry, he appoints a couple of guards from their number. After changing, Rhaegar sends messages out to his captains manning Oldtown's gatehouses and walls.

Queen Rhaella shows up at Rhaegar's tent without warning, having already sent a message commanding Elseyris to meet her there. She intends to speak to both of Aenar's children/

If the young Targaryen lord was surprised by the Queen's unexpected visit, he didn't show it as he greeted her.
"Forgive my humble abode, Your Grace." he said, as he ushered her in and offered her the best seat he had. As she settled herself, he looked around at his bare possessions, wondering what else he could offer.
"I think I have some Arbor wine taken from when we captured the city. Would you care for some?"

Rhaegar could not recall a time in which the queen had ever sought out his company. She had always been cool but polite to Aenar's widow and children, even after the failed rebellion. Nobody could ever fault her courtesy towards them, but it was plain that she felt no desire to befriend any of them and would have preferred that they not exist at all. On this occasion she took the seat with as much grace and ease as if it were a throne and coolly accepted his offer of wine.
"That would be very pleasant, thank you. I sent for your sister as well. I must have words with you both."

Elseyris arrived at her brother's tent, full of anxiety about being sent for by the Queen. As she entered Rhaella's presence, she sank to one knee as best she could with her arm in a sling, and bowed her head;
"Your Grace."
She rose again, her balance a little shaky from milk of the poppy. She nodded to Rhaegar;
"Brother."
Her attention then turned solely to the Queen, waiting to hear the reason for her summoning.

"Sit down," Rhaella said to Elseyris. Then, after the girl was seated, she looked sternly at them both. "I have been told that you both lost your dragons in the battle. Casualties are unavoidable in war, yet the loss of a dragon is a terrible thing. I grieve with you both."
She looked first at Rhaegar and then at Elseyris.
"We all know that the pair of you have been closely watched throughout your lives, and particularly for the last three years. Your service in the war is a point in your favour, but it does not change the past. It is my decree that each of you must petition the king for permission to go to Dragonstone if you wish to claim new mounts for yourselves. Furthermore, if you do go, you will go with an escort approved by the crown."

"Thank you, Your Grace. The loss of my dragon is still acutely felt, but, I intend to tame a new one, after I am recovered from my injuries. The Crown Prince has offered to escort me to Dragonstone, if I am granted permission to go. I hope that may be an assurance to yourself and the King."

Rhaella frowned, though whether at Elseyris' presumption, or her son's, it was not clear.
"That was good of the prince," she said. "Nevertheless, I insist that the king grants permission for you to go. Aegon is not king yet. Naturally, I would be happy for him to serve as such an escort, if his services are not required elsewhere."
Yet she had to wonder why Aegon had made that offer.
"I did not know you were friendly with my son," she remarked.

Elseyris felt the Queen's gaze oppressively upon her, as she realised that she should probably have stopped at "Thank you, Your Grace".
"I have been part of the Prince's personal guard since leaving the capital. He honours me with his comradeship."
She met the Queen's eyes as she spoke, knowing that to divert her gaze might seem suspicious.

Rhaegar had expected no less, so he was not surprised at the Queen's edict. He did however raise an eyebrow at the revelation that the Crown Prince had offered to escort his sister to Dragonstone.
"We have served the Iron Throne to the best of our ability in this war and lost our dragons in the process." he said respectfully to the Queen. "If we were to petition the King, Your Grace, what do you expect him to say? "

Rhaella secretly thought that Elseyris was probably not physically strong enough to be a guard for her son, but she simply nodded, though she wasn't happy with the situation. She would have to find out more about that particular friendship.
"Well then, I see no reason why Aegon could not be of assistance in this matter."
She looked to Rhaegar. "I do not doubt that you are loyal," she said, though the words for now hung uncomfortably in the air. "The king takes a dim view of anybody who loses a dragon in battle, no matter the cause. He was most wroth with Ser Maekar for losing Meraxes a few years ago. The loss of your dragon, and your sister's, is more likely to elicit anger than sympathy from His Grace. Especially given the fact that the two of you were sired by a traitor. You may need to prepare yourselves for a refusal. Even if the king gives his consent, it is to be expected that he will not look as kindly on either one of you."

Elsey looked to the floor;
It would be hard for him to think less of us anyway.
"Understood. Is there anything else Your Grace would have of me?"

"No. Your obedience will suffice. Just remember to be humble and grateful when you come before the king. If you are truly loyal, your honesty will be best received alongside humility."

"Of course, Your Grace. I would do nothing else."
She remained seated in silence, waiting to be dismissed.

"You may go, Elseyris," Rhaella announced, though she waited to see if Rhaegar had more to say.

"Thank you, Your Grace."
Elsey stood up slowly, in the slightly awkward, yet pain-limiting manner she had adapted for herself. She gave Rhaegar a perfunctory nod, then left the tent.
As she strode back to her own tent, desperate to be once more away from scrutiny, the anxiety she had been suppressing in the Queen's presence bubbled up, as she felt her heart racing, and her breath becoming fast and fearful.

Rhaegar watched his youngest sister go in silence. Elseyris had little to say to him these days for some reason. He hoped that she was not turning out like his elder sister Visenya, who also wished him out of her life. He supposed that his very existence was an uncomfortable reminder of their father's folly and their current position, despite the fact that he himself had done nothing to warrant such treatment.
He turned to the queen.
"I would hope His Grace, the King, would understand the vagaries of battle. I mourn the loss of Vermax, but I take a very small comfort in that he died in the service of the Iron Throne. Through his sacrifice we discovered the new weapons that the Faith Militant employed to destroy dragons."

"Yes. I do not deny that but it does not change the fact that Vermax died. The king will not be happy, Rhaegar. You need to accept that and be prepared to put forward your case for a new dragon. It would be exceedingly foolish not to seek the king's permission," Rhaella warned.

"I will indeed seek the King's permission to be allowed a new dragon." replied Rhaegar gravely. "Whether I seek a new dragon or not will depend on circumstances."
His face fell and his normally calm outward demeanour crumbled a little. He blinked back tears briefly before pulling himself together and meeting the Queen's eyes, his former impassive countenance restored.
"At present, though I cannot imagine riding any dragon other than Vermax."

Rhaella listened with a faint hint of surprise. She rarely thought about Rhaegar's feelings at all since he was the traitor's son and she couldn't help fearing he might follow in his father's footsteps out of a misplaced need for revenge, so she was surprised to hear that the cared so much about his dragon. And yet she knew her own grief would be considerable, should she one day lose Amethyst.
"I am no stranger to loss," she told him. "Amethyst lives, of course, but I have lost many of the people dear to me. Yet we must all move on. Vermax will not be forgotten."

Rhaegar nodded. "I shall certainly not forget him."
He was silent for a moment.
"Will be that all Your Grace?" he asked respectfully and with somewhat of a wan smile. "If so, I thank you for the visit. I can imagine it would not have been easy for you to come here and speak with a traitor's son."

Rhaella smiled at the comment, though it irritated her that he dared to speak such words, true though they might.
"It is of no matter," she said. "I have many duties. Good day, Rhaegar."
She stood and left.

Rhaegar stood aside respectfully and opened the tent flap for the Queen to exit. He followed her outside and watched her walk away. As she disappeared he stood there a moment deep in thought before entering the tent again.
