Although Dragonstone has been a Valyrian stronghold for centuries, the Faith of the Seven has had its presence on the island - peaceful and discreet, this close to Targaryen power - throughout the war. Prince Aegon has deliberately cultivated them since he came of age, and the island is home to many septons, with moderate views. Most of the Faith's practitioners quietly observe their religion in the small village septs that dot the island. The Warrior's Rest is one of these, a small sept in the village of Pennypool, that is so ancient that it resembles the buildings of the First Men. It is a shrine dedicated to the Warrior alone, and its graveyard is exclusively reserved for knights.
The Warrior's Rest, unlike most village septs, is not situated near the center of Pennypool village, but rather some distance away. It is thought that the original village that surrounded the sept was burned down in a war long ago, and Pennypool was built some time after.

Vira had spent a day monitoring the comings and goings of the sept's untutored village septon and his boy servant. As dusk fell, she crouched in the darkness of the hill behind the sept, and waited. In her hand was a shovel, which she had snatched from a barn.

The septon retired for the evening, darkness falling within the sept as he blew out the few candles still flickering.

As soon as she knew she was clear, Vira ran lightly down the hill and jumped over the fence that ran around the sept's graveyard. This was not the way she wanted to do things, but Vira need an axe, and a shield, and whatever else she could find in these graves. She was short on coin, and didn't feel like going begging to the King - or anyone else - for the weapons she needed. And no amount of fucking would convince a skilled blacksmith to part with high quality steel weapons.
She chose the grave that looked most recent, and began to dig. The work was not especially taxing for her, for she was a strong, robust girl underneath her slender frame, and manual labor was not foreign to her. She dug until she had unearthed the coffin, and kicked it open.

Even for one accustomed to manual labor, digging a grave is no relaxing task. Beads of sweat dotted the young woman's brow and she struggled to pry open the wooden coffin, which had been nailed shut.
To her disappointment, other than the rotten skeleton within, only a rusty longsword and filthy chainmail were found inside.

Disgusted, sweaty, and thirsty, Vira held her sleeve to her nose to drown out the stench while she leaned on her shovel, panting. The corpse was disgusting, but she plucked the longsword out anyway - a smith would pay for that steel. After resting for a bit and fortifying herself with water from her waterskin, she began on another grave.

This one had a good sized shield, though little else. Vira could see a candle flicker alight again in one of the windows of the sept.

She yanked the shield out and lay down in the grass just behind the gravestone as she saw lights flicker on inside the sept. Who could be there at this hour? Maybe I'm not the only grave robber here, she thought with amusement.

A few moments later, the old septon wandered out, a sleeping cap upon his head and lantern in hand.
"Mother's mercy!" he exclaimed, upon seeing the two defiled graves, raising his lantern up to look for the culprit.

Seven hells. Vira had completely forgotten that septons lived in their septs. Lower Crinkley had never been big enough to merit its own sept, so they had all traipsed off to Upper Crinkley when they needed a septon, or waited for a wandering septon to happen upon their little hamlet.
She lay completely still, hidden behind the gravestone, knowing that he was more likely to see her if she moved.

The septon gives a shout, his young novice running out from the sept, running his sleepy eyes. After a moment of discussion, the boy runs off towards the village proper, presumable to fetch the constable or bailiff.

Vira cursed under her breath. She was torn between running up to the old man and knocking him out, and simply running away under the cover of darkness, especially since the septon had turned back to the sept to speak to his boy apprentice. After a moment of deliberation, she decided to grab the shield and sword, abandon the shovel, and run for it. She leaped up from her hiding place as quick as a cat, and fled out of the graveyard.

The septon called out after her, but did not give chase.

Vira fled the sept with the rusty longsword and shield. The next day she appeared in the village of Pennypool, and traded in the rusty longsword and shield for an axe. She had scraped off the arms from the shield so that they wouldn't be recognizable, and had disguised herself, just in case the septon had caught a glimpse of her (however small) in the darkness and talked about her.

Fortunately for Vira, nobody seemed to recognise her. She was just another ordinary looking girl trying to scrape a living in a tough world. So she ran into no trouble on her journey to exchange the weapons.

Vira took her axe and trotted off happily.
