Rhaella frowned. She had never understood her son's stubborn determination to cling to false gods. She watched him go then looked at Maekar with the cold expression she rarely wore in public, unless there were traitors to be punished.
"I was told it was you who killed my daughter," she said. "Tell me the truth. Was she truly a traitor? Did the orders come from her father?"

Maekar's face hardened, and he stared at the Queen for a long moment. "You truly believe I would murder my own sister for any reason other than a direct order from his grace, the King."
He walked out of the pavilion, but as he passed her, he paused. "Ask your daughter by whose hand she lives to speak with you again, your grace. Perhaps one daughter's life saved can make up for another's life taken," he added bitterly, and then left the tent before she could reply.

Rhaella strode out of the tent, catching up with Maekar. She caught his arm to make him halt for just a moment. There was no hiding the grief in her voice. She and Aemy had not been close, not for many years, yet Rhaella had never stopped caring about her eldest daughter, not deep down in her own heart.
"I do not blame you for following orders, ser. But you must expect a mother to grieve the loss of her daughter, no matter what she did or intended to do. Aemy should never have died at the hands of her own blood. I cannot put that aside when I have not yet mourned her passing."
She walked away, fuming that the king had not told her about Aemy, grief stricken over the loss of her daughter, her brother and various others.
