Servants and soldiers see to the Queen and her dragon with all due ceremony when she arrives. She is informed that her son is in his command tent, discussing strategy with Ser Maekar, and a small procession of knight see to Rhaella's needs and escort her there.
"Mother," Aegon said, having only been informed of her arrival moments before. "Arenya arrived here yesterday. She did not mention you would be coming?" The last was posed as a question.

Maekar looks up when the Queen enters. His left arm is still in a sling, bound at the stump of his wrist, and there are fewer bandages on his face; just a simple strip of linen binding a thicker linen pad that covers his empty right eye.

Rhaella's face was shadowed with grief over her daughter's death but her expression lightened as she entered her son's presence. Nobody had yet dared to tell her of her brother's death.
"Arenya didn't know I was coming," she said. "I had thought to wait at Sun House in case I could do some good there. But there was really no reason to wait. I had to know what happened. Are my daughter safe?"
Her heart fluttered with anxiety. She didn't want to lose another child.
She glanced at Maekar, lips tightening as she saw him, but she nodded politely.

"Your grace," Maeker said by way of greeting, with a polite nod of his head. He said nothing further, however, waiting for Prince Aegon to give his account.

"They both suffered wounds, but nothing permanent," Aegon said, though not in the tone a person used to deliver good news. There was more to come. "Valarr is dead. He fell in battle with his dragon. We lost three more dragons as well. Vermax, Nenyan, Azuria. Their riders all pulled through. We have many wounded. Some worse than others." His eyes drifted unconsciously toward Maekar when he said it, but he quickly looked back to the Queen. "But the city has fallen. The Faith Militant is broken and destroyed. Ser Hector is dead, devoured by Glutton. The High Septon is dead." He paused, then said more quietly, "By my hand."

AT first the queen was relieved that her daughters were safe but the feeling was shortlived. The blood drained from Rhaella's face. Her brother, battle companion and dearest friend dead. It couldn't be. But she knew Aegon would not lie to her.
She held herself silent for a long moment because the alternatives were to cry or rage and she didn't want either Aegon or Maekar to see that. But when she finally trusted herself to speak she said "What did you do with the High Septon's corpse. I want his head since I cannot have Ser Hector's. Your father will want it tarred and displayed for all to see the might of House Targaryen."
She paused, swallowed. "Tell me about Valarr. They should not have taken his life. We fought together so many times. I should have kept him with me. But your sister asked for him."

"He flew too low, when we bombed the gatehouses with Wildfire, your grace," Maekar replied, speaking up. "One of the ballistae on the walls fired their queer exploding bolts, and it struck the barrels Ithilgore was carrying; he and Lord Valarr were likely killed instantly by the explosion. They both died as warriors, as befits their lineage," he added.

"The Faith devised... weapons," Aegon clarified. "A harpoon on an enormous chain, shot from the top of the Hightower. And some means of arrowhead for their ballistae, which exploded with enough force to kill a dragon. Valarr did not linger in pain."
"The High Septon's body is in the Whispering Sound now," Aegon added.

Rhaella bowed her head in silent prayer for her brother.
"He loved me," she said, looking up at last. "He loved me and asked so little in return. And now, well, I have lost the best friend I could ever have. His sacrifice shall not be in vain. Aegon, you have done well, but you ought have left the old man's corpse. Your father will desire a trophy of war, I do not doubt it."
She looked from Aegon to Maekar and back again.
"My son, I hope you understand at last just how vile and dangerous their Faith Militant really is. They were a plague upon this land and must be exterminated. Now, what have you done with the survivors?"

Maekar was inwardly amazed that she brushed off the deaths of four dragons and close to two thousand soldiers, focusing on one man, even one who was her own brother. They had been examining quartermaster's reports when the queen arrived. "Unless shipping resumes in the Whispering Sound, and food is important, we won't have enough to feed our own men beyond the end of this week, let alone any prisoners."
"What happened when you fought Lord Redwyne at sea, your grace? Will his ships be a threat if we order the merchants to begin shipping grain?"

Aegon's temper flared. "Should I have saved a lock of Aemy's hair as well, so Father might have his trophy?" Aegon snapped. He looked down then, ashamed of losing his temper with a mother who grieved as much as he did. After a moment he continued in a more even tone, as if choosing to ignore his own outburst. "The High Septon is dead. That is all that matters. So is every captain of the Warrior's Sons and Poor Fellows. Redwyne is who we must focus on now."

"I wanted to see their corpses, Aegon," Rhaella said. "I have dreamed of it, ever since the first Battle of Oldtown. I was almost killed then. And now I have been denied the chance to look upon their dead faces. Now I have more reason than ever to wish I might have done that. And I have been denied my vengeance. You are young men, both of you. You cannot imagine how I have dreamed of this day. The cost has been so high. I had hoped to see the traitors burn. Now I never can."
Rhaella was quiet for a moment, thinking. She regretted the loss of Vermax and Nenyan though she couldn't help but be relieved that Aenar's children were dragonless. Azuria was a greater loss since she had produced so many eggs for House Targaryen and her egg had come from the same clutch as Amethyst. Victory had come at a great cost of dragons, as well as men. Rhaella had always expected to lose men, because that was the way of battle, and with Oldtown so strongly manned, she'd expected heavy losses, unfortunate though it was. But she had been hoping that this time they wouldn't lose any dragons. It had been bad enough almost losing Seaskimmer. She was immensely grateful to the gods that Amethyst was unharmed.
"Redwyne is still a threat, but he cannot hope to stand alone, even with his fleet. Why would he, when he can no longer trade with the Faith Militant? We cannot afford to ignore his ships, so it would be wise to wait before we start arranging grain shipments."
She paused, slid her hand down to the hilt of her sword and squeezed.
"Lord Velaryon was outmatched by Redwyne. We were forced back to Sun House before we lost our dragons, though the enemy retreated to the Arbor. Both sides had to lick their wounds, and Greyjoy has returned to the Iron Islands. So we must hope Redwyne will give up the fight now."

"Be satisfied with justice, Your Grace." Aegon did not often address his mother in the formal style, but he chose to do so now. "We prove ourselves greater than our enemies by rising above their conduct."
He moved on to the other issue. "Perhaps Redwyne cannot stand alone. But it sounds as though he fought off four dragons, and with Greyjoy retreating we will have less ships if it comes to violence. We should consider moving the remainder of the Velaryon fleet to Oldtown, in case it is necessary." Aegon considered. "But if we can end this without risk to more dragons, so much the better. I intend to recommend Aemon Targaryen be made Lord of Oldtown, now that House Hightower is extinguished. Perhaps a betrothal with Aemon's boy might soothe Redwyne enough to surrender."

Maekar nodded at that. "That would be reasonable, however the loyal houses whose lands border those of the Hightowers will expect gains for their service. Lord Tarly in particular deserves a reward; I am told that he practically prevented our lines from routing on the ground before the day was decided. More than fifteen hundred of our men are dead; when those who have mortal wounds finally succumb it will likely be closer to two thousand dead over all, though at least five times that number of the Faith were killed on the field. I imagine more were killed in the rout, but we must have at least thousand poor fellows taken prisoner. Six and a half thousand of our own men remain, though nearly half of those are wounded in some way," he said, looking up from the table.
"Lord Aemon certainly distinguished himself in battle, and is well deserving of such a reward," he added.

Rhaella nodded. "Aemon would make a fine lord of Oldtown. It shall be done. I will draw up the documents myself and present them to the king for his approval and seal. Baelon is to marry the young Lady Cuy, so we shall have two of our kin safeguarding the south. As to the ships, I have already instructed a large portion of the fleet to make its way here while the rest remains anchored off Sun House until it is safe to sail home."
She paused for a moment.
"What reward shall we offer Lord Tarly? Do you seek no reward for yourself, Maekar?"

"I-" Maekar cut off for a moment. "I serve at the pleasure of his grace the King, and take whatever he sees fit to be stow," he said quietly. "His grace the prince has already gifted me with the sword Vigiliance that was his prize by right."

"Good," Aegon nodded at his mother's words. "Lord Tarly has a betrothal already. Maelys' daughter, if I recall. Perhaps he has a son of age and skill to join the Kingsguard, should we need to reward him farther. At any rate, we should arrange a parley with Lord Redwyne."

"Then Tarly has his reward," Rhaella said with satisfaction. "Unless he asks for more, in which case we will deal with the matter if it arises. And it seems Maekar has his reward too."
She looked at the bastard for a long moment, as if questioning why he had not asked for lands and a keep of his own, but then she turned back to Aegon.
"Yes. A parley would be good. It may be that Redwyne will approach us. If not, we must needs send one of our own dragonriders with a flag of truce, though that would not be my own choice."

"He can't possibly hope to hold out. Even after winning a battle at sea and killing Lord Velaryon, he has to know he will die by fire if he still stands against us. He will bend the knee, though his position; his island and the greater part of his fleet intact and at full strength, will give him a strong position from which to negotiate. He might resist for yet a while, for the Arbor is the only land untouched by this war and his coffers are likely filled with gold from trade, which is something that we decidedly lack," Maekare replied. He had met the Queen's gaze evenly as she stared at him. He knew it was not a bastard's place to demand rewards of his own choosing, and he also knew the one reward that he wanted would not be granted to him.

"I agree. With our dragons as wounded as they are, and with only half the ships that Redwyne possesses, it would be foolhardy to press an attack before attempting negotiation. I will go myself. You were present at the battle, Mother. Do you desire to treat with the man also?"

"I would not send the Crown Prince and the Queen, your grace," Maekar said. "A delegation of three dragons, a show of strength, ought to be sufficient. I would recommend you take Arenya and Trajan, both of whom are uninjured and have dragons of a sufficiently intimidating size, but neither are they of a size with Glutton as to seem like an attack. Perhaps the Queen could oversee Oldtown in your absence," he suggested.

Rhaella nodded. "Yes. it is best if I not go myself. It needs only one of the two of us. That would be most suitable. You shall go, then, Aegon." She took off her signet ring and pressed it into his hand. "Go with my blessing. Arenya and Trajan may accompany you, as Maekar suggests. Be sure to make no more concessions than you must."
She looked at Maekar. "In the meantime your brother may continue to assist me in setting things to rights here before we return to Kings Landing."
Though her eyes narrowed as she thought of home. She wasn't looking forward to seeing Maegor again. Not this time.

Aegon nodded, accepting the signet ring. The suggestions were very sensible. "Very well. Amethyst should be enough to protect the wounded dragons, I imagine. You should bring Aemon in on your councils, if he is to be the Lord of Oldtown. I will inform Arenya and Trajan."
Aegon hesitated on his way out, as if to embrace Rhaella, but instead said, "I am glad you are safe, Mother."

She put her hand on his shoulder. This close, he could see the grief written across her face. "I'm thankful you are safe too. Please, put aside your belief in their Seven gods and cleave to the true gods of Valyria. And keep yourself safe, if you can."

When his mother put a hand on his shoulder, Aegon's expression softened and he nearly said something. But then she spoke about the gods, and Aegon's features hardened again. He nodded once, curtly, then walked out.
