This room is not truly their 'chambers' in the strictest sense, but rather it is just a room appointed somewhat like an office, with a large table around with the Small Council meets. There is a large chair for the King, on a dais at the head of the table, but it only goes occupied when the King feels like attending the Small Council meetings, occasionally leaving such duties to his Hand.

Janos took a seat to one side of the Kings chair. He had sent servants to let the rest of the council know he had called a meeting after Grand Maester had informed him of the message from Oldtown. He had also sent a message to the King requesting that he attend this meeting in particular. Truth be told he was not excited for the meeting, as the news from Oldtown would likely put the King in a violent mood at best.

Maegor attended this meeting, as he had all Small Council meetings that took place when he was at the capitol, taking his usual seat at the head of the table.

Once the entire Council was assembled Janos considered how to say what he had to say. "Your Grace, we have news from Oldtown, Hektor is Dead, the Faith Militant has been effectively destroyed and the City Taken" He said, already considering how to tell the rest of the news.

Brandon had entered with Maegor, his White Shadow, ever since the dream. He took his seat wordlessly and waited.

The Grand Maester sat with a cup of wine in hand, listening intently. Lord Reyne, also present, was uncharacteristically quiet.
The Grand Maester, not very surprisingly, was more concerned for the Citadel than for the Faith Militant.
"I thank the gods that the foul Dragonbane is dead, and his creature the High Septon too. But what of my former colleagues and the Citadel? It would be a great tragedy if the wisdom of the ages were lost to us. So many books..."
He looked slightly sick at the thought of harm coming to the old books.

Brandon considered the matter. Hector dead was likely to be popular with the King.
"What of our losses?" he asked finally.

"The Maesters in Oldtown consumed a poison before those sent to secure the Citadel arrived, they had also torched some books by the time we arrived, however most of the Library remained untouched by the fire." Janos said, glad for the relatively good news. He then considered to Answer the lord Commander's question. "We lost around 1000 men in the fighting, this is before we take those whose wounds killed them after the battle. There were some men killed when...The faith militant set off explosives at the base of the Hightower, collapsing it on the market district." At this stage he held his breath before saying. "As well as the troop casualties... 4 Dragons were killed in the fighting" At this stage he momentarily considered mentioning those captured, but decided against it.

Brandon considered this news, 'What of their riders?" He asked.

"Other than Valarr, all the riders survived their Dragons deaths, albeit some with injuries" Janos said, "Also Lord Baelor Targaryen was killed, though his Dragon was not"

Brandon thought of the little girl in the well. It seems that she would not see her father again. Life for a life, perhaps, some times Brandon had a sense that the world worked with that kind of cruel balancing.
"I see," he said.

Lord Reyne said "This is grave news indeed. But we always knew lives would be lost. Is there anything else we need to know?"
The Grand Maester said "I shall have to send someone to supervise the protection of the library. I know the Princess Dowager is interested in preserving the books. Perhaps she might consent to go in my stead."

"And what of the High Septon?" Brandon asked, surpised it had not yet been mentioned.

"Dead too, as mentioned the faith Militant is effectively destroyed" Janos said. "I suppose it is a good thing this mess has finally been dealt with"

King Maegor II sat in a dark silence as the news, both good and bad, was relayed in pieces, steepling his fingers.

He had heard the grand maester say the man was dead but it sounded more official from the Hand. "Law and order will be a problem. A lot of masterless Poor Fellows scattered through the Kingdoms. Their rebellion may be broken but we may wish some code of faith constrained those who survived unless they are dealt with in some way."

Lord Reyne spoke up. "We should send out a proclamation urging all such men to disband and take up lives as farmers or craftsmen, or else to take service with the Night's Watch. Set a period of general amnesty to give them time to do this. Any Poor Fellows found to continue their old ways after this period will face execution." He smiled. "Or, instead of executing them, we might send them to the mines in the West. We are always in need of more men to work the mines."

"That could work, most will probably take the offer of amnesty. However Lord Reyne, should sufficient Poor fellows decide not to put down their weapons, then how do you suppose we capture them?" Janos said.

"We will have a returning army in need of work. The peasants will go back to their fields, of course, but the lesser ranking knights and men at arms can be put to work rooting out threats to the King's peace," Lord Reyne answered.

"I can only see one flaw in your plan, these men are effectively soldiers, and so having them go directly after the Poor Fellows will realistically have limited value" Janos said with much Cynicism visible on his tone. "The way I see it the solution is far simpler, have the same men assigned to protecting the Kings peace, to making sure that travelling from Kings Landing to say....Harrenhold, is not inviting banditry. As Lord Commander Snow said, the rebellion is broken. How long are these men likely to keep resisting when there are patrols on the roads. They have no leader, no objective, and realistically those who do not take the offer of Amnesty soon will become little more than bandits, at which stage hunting for them on an organized level becomes pointless." He continued. "If we put returning soldiers and such to the task of restoring the peace, they can actively contribute to fixing the mess the realm is currently in, as opposed to having men trained for war against a solid force stumbling around in the dark hunting for rebels, many of whom will likely hide who they really are. In the meantime we keep the amnesty offer, but any who are caught in Banditry or as active members of the Poor fellows will be either executed, or assigned to serve the crown in servitude, or serve the realm in the nights watch."

"That might serve," Lord Reyne mused. "We might also look to increase the City Watch as well. In addition, once Oldtown is taken, we will need to recruit and maintain a City Watch there. As the stronghold of our enemies, Oldtown is the most dangerous place regarding possible sources of trouble. It will need a strong guard to maintain the peace there."

"There are no Hightowers remaining to return the land to? If not, his grace will have to award the territory to another. We can't hope to manage that land from all the way up here in King's Landing." he sighed.
"As regards the Faith, something should be done as well. It is still the religion of the majority of his grace's subjects, and now that it's back is broken, we should insure it remains a pliant and peaceful Faith. I'd propose we move any remaining religious leadership to King's Landing, where we can keep an eye on them, and let the center of their church be here. Perhaps rebuilding Prince Aegon's sept to serve as their headquarters. Somewhere they can see the Red Keep and the Dragonpit from, as they worship, lest they ever should feel a pressure to return to their old ways."

Lord Reyne glanced warily at Maegor as Brandon outlined his suggestion. Both king and queen were renowned for their hatred of the Seven, particularly after their father had been slain by the armies of the Faith Militant and time had not improved matters. Lord Reyne had grown up following the Seven and had no desire to see the Faith wiped out entirely but he could not imagine the king giving his approval to this plan.
But the Grand Maester said "The Lord Commander speaks sense. We need to win their hearts to gain true peace."

"I have to agree with the Lord Commander, whoever we grant Oldtown to will have the responsibility of keeping the peace there, as makes sense. Also on how we handle the seven, before we were ending a war, but any more than ensuring their loyalty will be kicking someone who is down and leaving nothing to lose." Janos said.

"Then let us seek to put the Faith to use for us," said the Grand Maester. "We can build a sept here and encourage the followers of the Seven to worship there."
"It must be plain and functional. We have no money to spend on ornate furnishings and elaborate statues," Lord Reyne cautioned.
