A large pavillion, spartanly furnished. Several maps lay across a small camp table, next to which there are two light chairs.

Aegon returns to his tent with Maekar, leaving Elseyris outside to ensure they are not disturbed.
Aegon had never been as enamored with the trappings of luxury as some of his kin, and when he flew south he packed precious little other than what he required for the campaign. But he did permit himself to bring two bottles of wine, and one bottle of much stronger firewater, as was popular in some parts of the south and east. It was this last he uncorked now, pouring two large portions into two cups.
Aegon sat down on one of the chairs heavily. "How long did you know?"

"Trajan brought me the King's orders when he arrived with Rhaena and Lord Valarr, the day before you did. Aemy attempted to recruit him to her cause, to persuade him to murder both father and you, so that she might be Queen," Maekar said. "When he informed father..." he held up the letter, upon which the Princess' name had been written so hard that the parchment had been torn.
"I have killed many people at the King's orders, but none have been felt this," he added, almost inaudibly, trailing off at the end. He took a deep breath, and straightened his back, looking at the glass of wine bt not touching it. "I feared that I would not be able to do it, if I spent any more time dwelling on my orders."

Aemy had always been ambitious; Aegon had known that, but he would never have thought she would resort to this. He remembered her full of fierce vigor on campaign in the West, and before that, when she had been a kind but awkward child he had reassured when the other girls made fun of her. But... plotting to kill him? Aegon wondered if this was somehow his fault, if he had loved her in the manner she wanted she would not have resorted to this.
It took him a moment for the other realization to hit him. "Trajan left before we did. Aemy was still in the city when father knew about her treachery. So was Uncle Aemon. Why...?" Aegon trailed off and took a drink. "That cruel fucking cunt of a man," Aegon said viciously. "She was your sister too. And he wanted you to kill her yourself."

Elseyris, stood just outside of the tent, tried to hear the conversation within, eager to know what had been the reason for Aemy's death.

Espionage roll - success
Fortunately for Elseyris she has a fair amount of listening to conversations that don't concern her and she is able to catch the majority of the conversation. She is particularly struck by Aegon's anger.

"I suspect had I taken to long too do so, I would have woken up one morning with Trajan's knives in my own throat... perhaps that may have been a better solution. I can only imagine his grace suspected that if she approached one bastard brother, she would approach the other as well, and he felt a need to test my loyalties," Maekar replied.
"They say the kinslayer is cursed in the eyes of both gods and men," he added, staring down at his gloved hands, which shook ever so slightly. He slowly exhaled, clenched his fists, and then opened them again in a calming exercise that he had been performing for years, whenever he felt as though he were about to be swallowed up by emotion.

"Father should not have used you in such a way. It was wrong," Aegon said. "And Aemy... Gods. What was wrong with her?" He looked near as exhausted as his brother. Aegon took another drink. "Gods. What are we going to tell Rhaena? What are going to tell Daenya?" The youngest sister had been deemed fit for war, but she was still only three and ten.

When Aegon mentioned their sisters, Maekar's head snapped up, the blood draining from his face. "How can I ever look her in the face again," he whispered half to himself in a horrified tone, not really indicating who he was talking about. He met the Crown Prince's gaze, and Aegon could see that his brother's eyes were wild with panic.
"I must go, I... I need the sky. Tell R- just tell them I am sorry. I did not have a choice," he said, the hollow words sounding even more meaningless than they had in his head. He turned to flee the tent, intending to find the solitude of the night sky in a way that only a dragonrider could.

Aegon let him go. He took another drink. He raised his cup to take yet another, but in a suddenly returned rage he threw the cup hard across the tent, the clay vessel shattering when it hit the hard earth.
Aegon left the tent, his face drawn and hard. He turned to Elsey. "I am assembling everyone at the command tent," he told her in a dead, flat tone. "See that you are there."

As Maekar burst out of the tent, Elseyris had to dodge him slightly, and she felt her pulse increase as she watched him stride off, knowing the gravity of the situation.
She was about to look in on Aegon when she heard a smash, then he emerged.
She nodded somewhat nervously at his order, never having seen and heard such anger from him;
"With you, as ever, My Lord," she said, and followed him to the command tent.

/////////////////////////////////////////////// The night after arriving back at the army with Lord Beesbury and his men, Maekar comes to Aegon's tent. His estimate them put them at a mere days outside of Oldtown, and it would likely that battle would commence soon after their arrival.

Aegon's tent is guarded more heavily than Maekar recalled. A young knight who Maekar vaguely recognizes as a Westerner -- one of the lesser Leffords, perhaps? -- sizes Maekar up as he approaches, but he is let in promptly.
"Maekar," Aegon says, looking up from a report he was poring over. "I received your letter. And the reinforcements. Good work."

"Thank you, your grace," he said quietly. "I wish to apologize for my abrupt departure when I left the host; it was improper and a dereliction of my duty as your second."

"I recall sending you on late mission to gather reinforcements, as time was of the essence," Aegon stated. "Do you recall otherwise?"

Maekar nodded. "Regardless, you have my apologies. I… acted in away ill befitting someone of my appointment," he replied, hesitating.
"I Intend to return my commission as Inquisitor to the King when we are done in Oldtown, and afterwards I would ask the boon of remaining in your service," he said. "I will not perform his black deeds any longer."

Aegon looked surprised. "I... of course, Maekar. You do me honor." He stood up and clasped his brother's arm. "If you are asking for forgiveness, you have it. After you did... what you had to do, you kept it together better than many a man would. I know you had no choice. I know why Trajan flies with this host, though I never asked for his presence." Aegon frowned at that thought. "When I was a squire, Lord Arryn once told me that no matter how many titles we accrue, 'Ser' is in some ways the most important one. This realm will have need of good knights long after it loses the need for Knight Inquisitors, Ser Maekar."

Maekar stood straight, and nodded. "I will live up to my knighthood. If it is true that the kinslayer is cursed by both gods and men… even a cursed man can strive to live rightly for his remaining days," he said. "Do your Seven gods believe in forgiveness? All I have heard of them is vengeance and purifying fire, much the same as the ancient Valyrian gods our father worships."

"When a man dies, he goes to the Father's hall," Aegon said. "The Father weighs both the good and the bad things we have done on his scales. Good deeds do no erase our sins, but strive long enough, and sincerely enough, and they may change the balance. And so with the Mother's mercy and the Father's justice we may earn redemption."
"Here," Aegon rummaged around his things for a moment, emerging with a book. It was an old and worn thing, bound in calf-skin, with no title on its cover but an engraving of a Seven-Pointed star. "When I laid dying on Dragonstone, after Lannisport, a man gave me this. It helped me... sort out my life. Maybe it will help you now."

Maekar took the book, running his fingers over the texture of the cover and the seven-pointed star that was ingraved into the leather. "I have never paid much thought to the gods before," he replied quietly. "But now I can think of naught by their eyes upon me. You have my thanks, brother, and my service, however it is reqired." He made a short bow, and then made to leave, unless it looked like the Prince had anything more to say.

"Go, and prepare yourself for the battle ahead," Aegon said with a small nod. He let his half brother go.
