The door was opened by Laena's sleepy maid. Aemy was shown in where Laena sat in an enveloping robe. "Greetings, child. What can I do for you?"

Laena frowned as she listened. "You are right to worry, but take care you do not overstep your boundaries. Do you think your father would have allowed Aegon to lead his army if he did not believe there was hope for the lad? I do not. Your father is undoubtedly arrogant, but he is not a fool."

"You make a valid point," Laena allowed. "And yet, it occurs to me that perhaps your father simply hopes the traitor's brat falls in battle. He may even be hoping that Aegon falls too, or else that the horrors he sees at Oldtown will drive some sense into the lad. You know what your father is like, Aemy. He expects his kin to earn his respect. It seems you have not yet done so. Nor has your brother, if I am honest." She sighed. "So...you believe Aegon will never make a suitable king, then?"

But Laena was unconvinced.
"And why do you believe that? The succession is not as clear cut as it may seem. As the only son Aegon is the most obvious candidate so long as he lives, but your parents have the right to choose otherwise whether he lives or dies. Why should he choose you? Your father does not show you any great favour and I am not sure your mother has the necessary confidence in your abilities either. What if they should prefer one of your sisters?"

Laena considered for a moment. "Daenya is no fit queen, I agree. But Rhaena might serve. And what of your bastard brothers? Rhaella would not be best pleased to see Maekar sit the throne, it is true, but she loves the Faith Militant no more than you or I. Your father favours Maekar highly. And he is my first grandchild. It is natural I should favour him."

"We are dragons. We do not have to follow the law of the Andals. Have you forgotten Orys Baratheon?" She smiled. "Child, what if you married Maekar yourself? Then the bastard claim would be wed to the claim of the trueborn princess. That would serve, I should think."

"You would need a consort," Laena reminded Aemy. "And Maekar is more ambitious than Trajan. You might try one of your cousins, of course, but I would prefer you to make common cause with Maekar. I could not - ever - countenance an alliance between yourself and the traitorspawn Rhaegar. But I am sure you are not such a fool as that."

"So you did. Your brother is close to the daughters, though, and there are some who say it would be a wise move to appease those who favoured Aenar's bloodline. My own view is that they should be dead, or forbidden to marry at all. But yes, none of them should be allowed to wear a crown. So we shall have to make sure Aegon's friendship with those girls is not allowed to continue. Should you object to marrying Maekar? It is likely your best hope if you wish to be queen."

"If he wishes to be king he shall see sense. If not, well then, it does not matter." She smiled slyly. "Let me handle Maekar when the war is over. That is his priority now. I will speak to him on the subject when he comes home."

"Quite right too," said Laena, "I have had many years to learn wisdom and you are still very young. Keep yourself safe in battle."
