"I will be as careful as I can be," Rhaena replied, and anyone knowing her would know how little that would actually be.
She returned the hug and smiled, "I had best get some rest, before my flight, tomorrow."

"Sleep well," Laena replied. "I will do what I can here. When Oldtown is taken, you and I shall got to the Citadel together and examine all their rare books. That would please me very much."

Maekar came to Rhaena's room with a grim expression, knocking politely before entering.

Rhaena was in her arm chair, when Maekar entered, and didn't initially look round when he entered.
She got up after a moment ad moved to the bed, tapping it beside her, to indicate he should sit.

Maekar moved to the bed silently, sitting down on her left side. "I heard," he said quietly, after a moment. "I suppose congratulations are in order."

"Please don't." She said, grimacing, "I really thought I had hot out of it... If anyone I thought it would be Daenya." She turned and looked into his face, "are you... Well?"

Maekar laughed bitterly at that. "You know that the King would never allow Daenya to become Queen," he replied. "I am fine; are you? I imagine your plans have been rather impeded by this news."

"I have just been told I am to be Queen of the seven kingdoms one day, what can I possibly have to be not fine about?" She asked, her tone made it clear she didn't agree with what she said.
"I had though, what with you a lord now... You and I... That was a child's wishes though."

"I know," Maekar replied quietly. It was not as though the King could be ignore dor disobeyed, when he made such a decision. He took her hand hesitantly, but his eye was fixed on a point outside the small window that was on the far wall. "I have said before; we would have to wake from this dream eventually."

"You are not the only one who said so," she commented remembering saying something similar herself not long ago, " it does not mean it does not hurt to wake up..." She was glad now she had made herself not fall in love with the new lord, it would have hurt all the more if she had. "This... Does not necessarily mean the end of us," she said quietly, squeezing his hand, not sure how he would react.

Maekar's fingers tightened around hers, and he turned his head to face her, with a reassuring smile. "Not unless you wish it so, Princess," he replied quietly, though she could hear in his voice that something was different; something had been lost that they would not be able to get back.

"I do not want this, Maekar, there are few things I want less, but what can I do?" She asked, letting her voice show her frustration at his tone, "what can either of us do? Things are bigger than us."

"You think I do not know that?" Maekar replied, irritation at her implication creeping into his own voice. "I know this is not your choice, and I do not blame you for it, so do not speak as though I do."

"You sound-" she started then shook her head, "I am not going to fight with you... not now," she said, after a calming breath. Now was not the time to get lost in emotion. She was going to get so drunk after this. "How did you find out anyway?"

"It's all the servants are talking about," the irritation not leaving his voice. "If you have something to say to me, though, say it. We'll likely not see each other much, when preparations begin for your royal wedding."

She pulled her hand away from his and stood up, and turned to faced him, eyes hard. "When I will have the most time free," she said, knowing she'd get to plan very little of the wedding herself, "perhaps we should wait until this is less raw before we discuss things properly, less we say things we do not intend,"

Maekar nodded, his face growing impassive. "As you say, Princess," he replied. The last word sounded far more like a formal title than the playful nickname he often used to address Rhaena when they were alone. "Summon me, when you wish to speak of this further," he added, turning and moving toward the door.

"You are welcome in my rooms any time, stop being so dramatic!" She said, then took a step closer to his retreating back, "and I am still going east, so at least you shall have plenty of time to grow up before we meet again."

Maekar paused and spun around, halfway out the door. "Did you not just tell me to leave?" He snapped. "Make up your mind, and let me know when you have decided what you want."

"I am not stopping you, The door opens both ways," she snapped back, eyes icey "I just meant that I would never summon you, you're not a servant, Maekar."

Maekar laughed bitterly. "You know full well that even the Lord of Darkheart cannot call upon the Queen whenever he likes… your grace," he said, emphasizing the last.
"Do you truly think that Aegon will suffer the fatherhood of his heirs to be question? Or that the King will?" he asked rhetorically. "You speak as if we are equals, but it is a farce and you know that as well as I. I do not have the luxury of simply doing as I please."

"You know, I don't think the King much cares," she spat back at him, not caring for the rhetoric, "You are not the Lord of Darkheart, you are my brother, but if you really need commands and invitations, then I command you to get out, and I invite you to not bother returning. Just go fuck your peasant."

"As you wish, your grace," Maekar replied with a sneer, making the title sound like an epithet. "I wish you and the Prince many happy years together. Have no fear that you will be missed," he added, turning on his heel and slamming the door behind him as he left.

"Like anyone cares to be missed by a bastard anyway," she shouted at the door. She paced the room and then grabbed the bow the Maekar had given her, and raised it up before, lowering it again and putting it down on the bed. It might be the only thing she'd ever have he'd given her. And it was too expensive to break in a rage.
