Karhold is a strong castle and the seat of House Karstark in the North. It is located in the eastern half of the North, south of the Bay of Seals, while further to the east are the Grey Cliffs. The castle was built by Karlon Stark, a younger son of Winterfell, who was awarded land after defeating a rebel lord a thousand years ago. The castle was named Karl's Hold after Karlon, but over centuries the name developed into Karhold and the Karhold Starks became the Karstarks.

Varryn landed outside of the castle early in the morning, looking up to Aemon. "Are you sure you don't want to join my outing? It could be fun. At least join us for a dinner before you fly back."

"I will stay for a meal, for both me and Azuria before I make my way back." Aemon says unhooking his chains and getting down from the saddle. "Feel free to take your saddle, consider it a gift if you are able to find your prize." Aemon adds with a smile.

Varryn removes the smaller saddle with appreciation, smirking at it. "Hah, my first dragon saddle, at the age of twenty-eight. Thank you, cousin. I'll go ahead and announce us to my mother, and have them fetch something for Azuria. What does she prefer?"

"Her favorite is pig." Aemon says as he removes his own saddle from Azuria's back and placing it on a nearby stump. "If you do not have that then a nice and plump sheep will do the trick." He adds.

"I'll see what they can rustle up. Feel free to look around the city, maybe buy a shiny thing." Varryn chuckled before heading off towards the keep, intent on finding his mother, and food.

Aemon instead spends the rest of the time with Azuria looking her over and making sure that she was comfortable after the flight.

Varryn arrived at the keep in a few minutes and nodded at the guards, making his way towards the main hall. Entering it, he glanced up towards the central platform. "Mother, it is good to see you. I know I haven't been around since Daegar.." Varryn trailed off there, looking at his feet for a moment before looking up again. "I've brought a friend, my cousin, Prince Aemon. He and his dragon will be joining us for dinner, if that's okay."

Lyanne Karstark was a tall lady with a statuesque figure and bone-white hair. Her face was lined but not to the point of detracting from her fine-boned features. Her grey eyes, however, sparkled when she saw her son.
"Varryn. Welcome. It has been so long since I saw you. Prince Aemon? No doubt we have met, many years past, but there are so many princes in the realm now."
She smiled at the two. "I fear Karhold has not hosted a dragon for many years, my son. I will trust the two of you to know what to do."

"Pigs or sheep should be enough for Azuria. Aemon is going to take me up to the Wall. I was hoping you may be able to help me with a small favor." Varryn looked around the room for any familiar faces from his childhood; potential allies.

"of course, my love. I will help as I can. Please say you are not going to take the black?" Lyanne begged. "We hold the Night's Watch in great esteem here in the North but I would like you to give me grandchildren some day. I have not even seen Adara's two younger children."
OOC - what kind of people exactly are you looking for?

"No, mother. I was planning a trip beyond the wall, in search of an ice dragon." Varryn said it with a plain face, as if it was an everyday task. "I'll send word that Adara should visit more often."
OOC - Really, just any bone you two felt like throwing me. Possibly buddies he'd trained with, or people who might know anything about the wall and beyond.

Lady Lyanne burst out laughing. "Adara, come North? Don't be silly, my love. She loves it in the capital. Her...appetites are better served in Kings Landing. We Northerners are cut of a different cloth. Adara is a dragon for sure."
Her expression turned serious. "What about an ice dragon? I had thought it a mere creature from a child's tale, a legend."

"It is likely that it may be exactly that, but legends do not come from nowhere. It may be that they existed, long ago. In the lands of the Eternal Winter, they still might. I have tried, but I cannot bond with any of the dragons we have. I believe my destiny is to find an ice dragon." Varryn lied slightly about being unable to bond; he'd found the tales of ice dragons and become latched ever since, determined to try.

"And what if you fail? Have you tried hatching one of the eggs on Dragonstone?" Lyanne's voice was harsh but she spoke from fear. "What if you die? I have already lost one son. Do you wish me to lose another?"

"Mother, we can't let fear dictate our lives. I know it is not safe, but please.. this is something I must do." Varryn voice had shifted to an almost pleading voice, though he would go with or without her blessing. "If I return successful, I can finally avenge Daegar. I can bring honor back to his name. To our name."

But Lyanne frowned. "Avenge him? Varryn, your brother died a traitor the Iron Throne. I loved him, as I love you, and your sister, but you must let him go. As i have. You cannot avenge him. Maegor is king, as the laws decree, and all who oppose him die."
She grabbed his sleeve.
"Never speak such words again!"

Varryn's face went cold, and he shook his head. "You were not there. Daegar stood up for a good man when nobody else would, no matter what the man had done or was doing. He died at the hands of a coward, killed from behind. I will see that man die, as I had to watch my brother. Only then can I let him go."

"Don't be rash, my dear. Torrhen Stark knew the importance of kneeling to the dragons. Stark and Karstark are kin. You must learn the same wisdom as Torrhen. This man who killed your brother, I know him not, but I believe he is one of the royal bastards? You cannot combat such a man, my dear. And he is your kin too."

"Mother, I will not argue about this. I came here to rest and enjoy time with the family I have left. I promise that I will be as safe as I can be beyond the wall, and try to return to you." Varryn took a step back, freeing himself from her grasp.

"Nowhere is safe from dragons, mother." Varryn didn't specify which dragons he meant, and simply shook his head with the statement. "If I do find an ice dragon, it may be that those of us with the blood of the North can ride them, as those with Targaryen blood can ride fire dragons. It may be worth a try when I return."

Lyanne sighed.
"Who has been putting these notions in your head, my son? Not the king and queen, I hope? I know it's not Adara. Your sister cares very little for dragons. So who else? One of your cousisn?"

"Nobody, mother. Only Aemon and Baelor know I plan to hunt for an ice dragon, and only Aemon and the King know that I am in Karhold right now. The idea for us to have dragons was my own. I think there is a reason there has never be a Targaryen in the North before."

"What reason is that"? She asked. "Your father came this far north and so did his brother. But they belong in the south, in Kings Landing and on Dragonstone. North is not their place."
