"Of course, my lady. Many of our own visitors are too frightened to come after the death of my predecessor. They fear the shade of the dead, or worry that they will meet a similar fate," he replied.

"Is it true, what the people are saying? Was the Septon really killed by a shadow, and in such brutal manner?" she asked with a look of concern and took a seat, beckoning the Septon to do the same. "Are you not frightened?"

"Of course I am frightened. I saw his corpse. It made me vomit," he said. "I am not sure if it was truly done by a shadow, because I did not witness it myself. But it is what the people say. But it was most horrific."

Frowning, Dany patted the man's shoulder, all the while wondering what kind of a savage would do something like this. "And yet you serve the Sept. May I ask you, why?"

"It is my duty and my joy. I love the Seven well and someone must tend their altars and offer guidance to those in need. Duty is not always safe, my lady."

"There is nothing nobler than this," Dany replied, somewhat moved by the man's devotion, and stood, leaving him to his seat. "I fare you well, Septon. May your future be brighter than what this Sept has seen."

He was on his knees before the altar of the Father, praying quietly, though she definitely heard him say something about being delivered from evil.

Smiling, Dany walked left the seat area and walked over to the seventh corner of the Sept. There, she lit a candle for the Stranger and prayed, her voice barely louder than a mere whisper.

Reaching out a hand to grasp his elbow, helping him to steady himself, Elseyris smiled, though her eyes were troubled; "May we speak in confidence?"

"Of course," he agreed. "How can I be of service?"
He drew her towards an alcove.

"Of course," he agreed. "How can I be of service?" He drew her towards an alcove. "Septon," she began, trying to keep the upwelling of her feelings under control. "There is a man. A man I love with all my heart, who loves me too, but I fear that his family will not allow us to marry. His father and mother despise me, for no reason other than my parentage. I go to make a petition for my case later today, but I am afraid. I do not know what will make me worthy in the eyes of my love's family. I have no lands, no prestige, I am the daughter of a disgraced man. But I have the dearest hope in my heart that this love might prevail. I seek counsel and solace."

If he understood, he gave no sign of it. "You must pray to the Father for justice," he said. "And pray to the Maiden, who protects all young women. I fear I have no experience in matters of the heart, my lady. i cannot help you, but the gods can. If it pleases them."

"I understand, Septon, I will. Will you guide me in my prayers, please? I am yet a novice in the correct worship of the Seven. I would seek to learn how to serve them well."

"Of course I will," he said. "Do you have a prayer book yet? That will help you."

"No, not yet," said Elsey, feeling embarrassed. "May I borrow one?"

He nodded, fished around in a cupboard and produced a Book of Common Prayer to the Seven Gods.
"This is the main source of our prayers," he said. "It was written many years ago by the most noble Septon Luceon, who later became High Septon, two hundred years ago.
He handed the book over. It had a plain leather cover an plain writing inside.
"Sorry about the lack of decoration. The illuminated books are all kept at the Starry Sept. Or were, at least."

Elseyris ran her hand over the cover, and looked to the septon with gratitude;
"It's alright, no need to apologize. I am not given to the ostentatious myself anyway. Thank you. Shall I fetch the candles?"

"Please do. You may light one at each of the altars if you so wish. We have enough for that."
He gestured towards a box at the far side of the room.

"Well, I would certainly not like to offend the rest of the Seven by leaving them out," she said, striding over to the box. She drew out seven candles, and returned to the septon's side.
"Lead on, good sir."

"The Father comes first," he instructed.
He indicated the prayer book. "There are several that might be of use. You could choose one that favours one god, or all of the Seven."

"I think I will need the help of all seven for what is to come," said Elsey, sadly, leafing through the book.
Upon finding one that seemed suitable, she approached the statue of the Father, and lit the first candle, placing it before him, then kneeling to begin praying. She followed the prayers in turn as best she could, though she felt little solace as the seventh prayer ended. She was still preyed upon by fear and sadness from which there was likely no catharsis.
"Thank you, Septon. I am sorry to have troubled you with the woes of my foolish heart. I shall be sure to return your kindness very soon."
She held the book out a little, not sure if he wanted it back immediately or not.
