Appearance: Brandon Snow resembles his mother Lyssandra Stark, the second daughter of the Lord of Winterfell, rather than his father Prince Maeron. He has classic Stark features with a thick head of black hair, and grey eyes and a trimmed black beard. He is of medium build, and his imposing appearance stems more from his counteanace than his size.
Personality: Brandon has a reputation for being a stoic man, slow to anger, and almost maddeningly patient. If he has much of an opinion on the affairs of the court or the King he keeps such things to himself. Those who have known him long believe that a great sadness rests upon him.
Background: Brandon was born to Lyssandra Stark on a frightfully cold night at Winterfell. He was the product of relations with Prince Maeron at the Manderly's great tourney some 36 years ago. Some maintain that Maeron forced himself on Lyssandra, others say the Stark woman seduced the Prince, but either way a child was born of the union. For whatever reason, Maeron was slow to claim his Northern bastard, and for the first years of his life Brandon grew up as a Stark bastard. He was treated harshly by his Lord Grandfather, who disliked the shame of bastardy. Only the desire to perpetuate the claim that the child had Targaryen lineage stayed Stark's hand and spared Brandon serious brutality.
At about the same time, Aerion was hatched, the first of a clutch of eggs from Silverwing and Vermithor. Despite repeated efforts, the beast refused to accept a rider, and remained a largely wild and uncontrollable creature.
When Brandon was 12 he was sent as a page to serve Wyden Karstark, Lord Karstark's third son. Wyden had pretensions as a tourney champion, and travelled south to participate in several tourneys. At a tourney in King's Landing, a trial was held seeking dragon riders for a few of the more wild dragons, including Aerion. The thought was partially to remind the subjects that it was the Targaryen family that were the commanders of Dragons, and as such they should know their place.
When Aerion was presented several Targaryen seeds attempted to mount him, only to be rejected. When the last one made an attempt, Aerion snapped off his leg at the upper thigh, and broke lose, flying towards the crowd. Valiant knights, among them Wyden Karstark strode forward to protect the crowd from the creature. But before they could do so, The beast stopped and stared at fascination at young Brandon Snow, immediately ending an imminent rampage.
Seeing this Prince Maeron commanded that the boy attempt to mount the beast. Terrified, Brandon did so, and Aerion accepted him instantly, as calm as a pussy cat. Maeron questioned the boy for his parentage, and when told Brandon was the child of Lyssandra Stark, he immediately claimed him as his own. Prince Maeron's desire to claim the youngster was based more on a desire to expand the ranks of his family members who were confirmed dragonriders, than it was out of any paternal instinct. It was established early that while Brandon might be in Maeron's household, he was expected to serve while there, and his connection to his Princely brother was limited.
Serve Brandon did, as a page, and squire. Brandon's one pleasure was Aerion, and the two were nearly inseperable, growing up together more as equals and companions than master and beast. He acquired his knighthood at the age of 18 serving in the battle of Bitterbridge against the Faith Militant when Prince Gamon was slain.
Several years later, while his Lord Father's army was being feasted at Grassy Vale on their way south to face the Militants at Oldtown, Brandon fell deeply for Lord Meadow's third daughter Melody, then a maid of seventeen. Camped there for over a week waiting out a bad storm that had washed out the road, the love affair blossomed. Brandon sought out his Melody's hand, but Lord Meadows refused. Miserable, the two fled Grassy Vale. In a village not far away, they met a Septon, who agreed to marry them in secret. However the Septon warned that Brandon must return to his father, while he would find the girl a place to hide until they could be together.
They agreed and were wed, Brandon returning without her to face a tongue lashing from Prince Maeron, who was forced to placate Lord Meadows anger. The army marched, fighting the Faith Militant throughout the Reach, on their way to Oldtown.
The army was being delayed by a series of Poor Fellow raids conducted out of a village along the Mander, and Prince Maeron ordered Brandon to fire the town. He took Aerion up into the air, and then set the town alight in a series of fiery bursts. For his finale he torched the sept where the last of the Poor Fellows had fled to. The building burned and the rebels inside screamed as they cooked to death.
Aerion landed in the aftermath of the carnage and Brandon inspected the scene, where, to his surprise, he found the burnt remains of the Septon into whose company he had intrusted his beloved Melody. Frantically he searched, but many of the remains, among them many woman, were too charred to be identifed.
Brandon lost his mind, and fled, riding Aerion north, abandoning his father and the army. He disappeared for several years, living in the Lonely Hills with Aerion his only companion, and given a wide berth by the clansmen who lived there. While he lived as a hermit, his father was slain at Oldtown by the Militants, as was Lord Meadows. All who knew of Brandon's brief romance and marriage were now dead, and the secret buried.
Brandon emerged from seclusion in 77 AL, on the day that Maegor II, his half-brother took the Iron Throne. His face was long and haggard, and his beard unkempt. He wore no armor, but carried his sword. Presenting himself before the new King, he warned that he had had a dream of the new King's murder. A clanswoman with pretense of the greensight had told him that the dream was of a future yet to come, and so, Brandon explained, he had come to warn the King.
The laughter was uproarious from the court, and Brandon was forced to depart, shamed yet again.
One evening several days later, in his chambers, King Maegor II slowly blinked awake. Looking above him he could see a shadowy form, a dagger glinting in the moonlight coming through the open window. Before Maegor could scream, the assassin brought his blade down, only to be parried inches above Maegor's heart. Brandon stood upon the window sill, his blade out. The two dueled, before Maegor was finally able to reach Blackfyre and run the would be killer through with it. Seeing the truth of Brandon's vision, and his loyalty in returning to defend his half-brother despite the mockery, Maegor declared on the spot that Brandon would be granted a position among the Kingsguard.
Over the next three years, Brandon has stood at Maegor's side. His tendency to predict threats to Maegor's life (Including three further attempts), has made him a valued asset, and as a result Maegor has declared him Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, even over those older and more experienced. Brandon has yet to have a dream that does not involve Maegor's being in danger. At court Brandon remains ill-favored, and considered odd and cold, hence his byname.
