Appearance: Courtesy of his Valyrian heritage and Lannister ancestry, Jacaerys has blonde coloring. He wears his hair long together with a closely trimmed beard which is almost stubble. Still relatively young in years (being only in his early thirties) and quite youthful looking, some find it hard to believe he has a sixteen year old son as his heir.
Personality: Known as “Jace” to his family and close friends, the Lord of Driftmark is known to be friendly and jovial with the less refined men in his service, though he has a sharp temper and his biting sarcasm is commonly avoided in High Tide.
Background: The son of Lord Edric Velaryon, Jacaerys was the elder of his two sons. On Edric's death in battle, Jacaery's elder sister Daenarys inherited Driftmark as per the Valyrian custom.Jaecarys reacted poorly to the news of his father's death, more so when Lord Redwyne was named to his father's seat on the Small Council. Jacaerys grew up resenting his sister's privileges as Heiress of Driftmark. She was allowed to accompany Lord Edric on his ship at the age of three and given an dragon egg, her own personal ship and even a war galley as she grew older while Jacaerys was sent to Kings Ladning to squire for Maegor II - a harsh taskmaster. As a result, Jacaerys resented his elder sister taking what he thought should be his inheritance, especially after she married Ser Edmyn Arryn, effectively passing control of Driftmark to the the Vale.
For her services in helping the Queen secure her throne, Lady Daenarys prevailed upon Queen Rhaena to give her brothers permission to bond with a dragon. Her thinking was simple. A dragon would make both her brothers more desirable as spouses especially to those families where a heiress was set to inherit. Her brothers were both ambitious and Daenarys had obviously hoped that if they had any longing or ambition for Driftmark, it would be assuaged, by acquiring their own lands and keep by marriage. Both Jacaerys and his younger brother Monterys Velaryon bonded Arras and Servys respectively.
Six months later, Daenarys died in the sky over Essos. Swearing that none but a true Velaryon would rule their ancestral seat, Jacaerys incited the people of Driftmark against the Castellan that Daenaery’s husband, Ser Edmyn Arryn had appointed to rule the island, until Alysanne Arryn, his daughter by Daenerys (and therefore Jacaerys’ niece) reached her majority.
With the aid of his brother, Monterys (who persuaded the Lord of Sweetport Sound and father of his new bride Rhaenyra Sunglass to support his brother's cause) and his uncle, Janos, Jacaerys had the resources of Stokeworth, Sweetport Sound, and Driftmark to call upon, as well as three sizeable dragons.
With Daenerys and Laena dead, Queen Rhaena's remaining dragonriders lacked the strength to truly contest Jacaerys' claim to the Lordship of Driftmark, and after Jacaerys was able to destroy an invasion fleet at anchor in Gulltown, he forced the Arryns to cede their claim to Driftmark, though it remained a bitter issue of contention between the Iron Throne and the Valemen, who already resented Queen Rhaena for the rumored manner of her husband's death. Shortly after, Lord Jacaerys married Myranda, the youngest sister of Lady Tysha Lannister in 82 AL in order to cement an alliance with the West and develop a regular source of income should he need it. Over the next few years he had four children by her, three sons and a daughter and a new found determination to pass Driftmark to his sons.
The Lord of Driftmark has also developed strong economic ties with Braavos and to a lesser extent with the other Free Cities such as Pentos, with many ships from the Free Cities stopping off at his own trading port Spicetown on the island Driftmark and not far from his stronghold of High Tide. With that revenue as well as support from his Lannister kinsmen, Jacaerys has been able to build up his personal fleet to as many as forty warships, equal to the number of the Royal Fleet. Together with his brother's ships and his brother's dragon, the Lord of Driftmark has helped to keep the sea lanes free of pirates on the Narrow Sea - occasionally in concert with Baelon Targaryen, the Master of Ships, in order to demonstrate his loyalty to the Queen.
Until recently he has rarely left his island, preferring to manage his own holdings, trade peacefully with the Free Cities, fight pirates and to not insult the queen by flaunting his conquest of Driftmark at her court. He and his brother Monterys are close, recognizing that their combined strength of dragons and warships keeps both their holdings safer. Mainly due to his agreement with Andal inheritance customs, Jacaerys has also flirted with the old religion of the Seven, welcoming the priests of the Seven and allowing them to set up Septs on Driftmark. He is careful though to avoid any association with the Faith Militant.
