Welcome to Dragons of Westeros.
This game is based on the world created by George RR Martin in his A Song of Ice and Fire novels and its companion novellas. We are taking particular inspiration from the recently published novella The Princess and the Queen, which centered around the Targaryen dynasty at a time when dragons still flourished.
The game is set in the first century after Aegon's Landing. In the established chronology, Maegor the Cruel failed to produce children and so the throne reverted to his nephew Jaehaerys. In our timeline Maegor did father children. His grandson currently sits the Iron Throne in the 80th year since Aegon and his sisters came to Westeros. However, the kingdom's peace is threatened by the belligerence of the Faith Militant, which has the full backing of the High Septon in Oldtown, while wandering septons foretell that the king's wicked mother will unleash foul demons to destroy them all. Furthermore, there is said to be trouble stirring in the North and Dorne has not yet been conquered. There are also rumours that a prince will one day rise up to destroy Maegor's line for good. The King and Queen know they will need to keep the allegiance of their kin and fellow dragon riders if they are to defeat their enemies.
A Targaryen can gain a dragon in two ways. If a clutch of eggs is available when a new Targaryen is born, the egg is placed in the baby's cradle and if he or she survives infancy, the gods may favour the child with a hatchling to train and raise as their own. However, dragons live thrice the lifespan of most men. It may be that if there are no eggs to hand, a child may instead have the opportunity to claim the dragon of a deceased relation for their own, though there is no guarantee the dragon may accept the rider. Men and women have been injured and even killed trying to tame an unwilling dragon.
Additionally, though a trueborn Targaryen is given their own egg where possible, a seed, the term for a bastard of Targaryen heritage, may sometimes be chosen to attempt a dragon taming if there are no suitable trueborn Targaryens available to ride a grown dragon. This is, however, less of a common practice, since the trueborn sons and daughters are given priority.
Players will take on the role of a Targaryen dragonrider or a bastard seed, and will also be permitted to choose the name, colour and skills of their dragon. Please note that no canonical Targaryens or other characters will be alive during the game though though you may meet some dragons with familiar names.
I strongly encourage players to seek out roleplay with each other as well as with NPC members of the royal family and the court. Making friends with members of the court is always going to be to your advantage, and enemies may lead to interesting roleplay.
