It was wise of Vira to change ships, for as they passed through the Stepstones three pirate vessels were sighted on the horizon. The Minnow, a swift ship if not one that was particularly attractive, was able to out-run them, but Vira was sure that if she had been aboard the Princess of the Narrow Sea they would surely have been caught, and she would even now be starting her new life in a Lyseni whorehouse, or worse.
When she stepped out onto the deck, she found something of a commotion. Her sons were struggling violently; a burly sailor was holding each boy by the scruff of his neck, out at arms reach. For an instant Vira did not realize, but then it registered that they were not struggling to escape the sailor's grasp, so much as they were struggling to get get at each other. The soldier bore an expression that indicated his preferred option would be to crack their heads together, but as he looked up and saw Vira he smiled sheepishly. "They was fightin', Mistress," he said, as if that needed to be explained. "Would'a just let 'em be, but they almos' knocked poor Tycho o'erboard," he added, casting a glance at a man who was leaning against one of the gunwales nearby.

Tavio ceased struggling instantly at his mother's command, and Lucero took the opportunity to worm his way out of the sailor's grasp and punch his brother once more in the nose.
"He stole my tin soldiers, and threw them overboard when I tried to take them back," the younger boy exclaimed loudly over his brother's cries.

Lucero squealed as his mother grabbed him by the ear. "I was just playing with them!" the older boy said through his sobs. "HE knocked them overboard," he added, sniffling.
Despite Vira's exceptional talent for picking out a lie, like most parents she is rather blind when it comes to her children, and is completely unable to discern if Tavio is lying to her or not.

Lucero sneered at his mother's threat, fully aware that she would never carry it out, but Tavio quailed slightly, and bobbed his head obediently. The elder of the two moved quickly to where one of the deckhands was scrubbing, watching for a moment to see how it was done properly before taking the hard-bristled brush himself and getting to work.
The younger Tovar son, however, just stood there with his very demeanor suggesting a challenge, meeting his mother's gaze evenly from a height equal to hers.

Looking pointedly at his brother as if to underscore the point, Lucero sneered and answered his mother. "The Blood of the Dragon does not swab decks."

Lucero glowered at his mother, not budging an inch, but by not responding instantly, Vira got the impression he was attempting to save face more than defying her. He had seen her perform that very action to a ship's captain who had been discovered to be skimming off her profits; Vira had ordered the new captain that replaced him to drag the hapless man behind the boat by a rope all the way from Pentos to Lys.
"'Lexys was never made to sweep anything," he grumbled after a long minute of silence, reaching for a broom. He did not begin sweeping, however, and still stared daggers at his mother.

Lucero seemed about to respond for a moment, but when Vira turned and left him on the deck his audience had disappeared, so he shut his mouth and sullenly began moving the broom back and forth.
