Baelon turned away from the window and sat down behind his desk.
"Where exactly are you planning on peddling your braziers and candles?"

He stroked his beard. "Braavos and Tyrosh caught my eye. Anywhere, really, with a vested interest in surviving the next winter, but it seemed politic to begin with our closest allies, or what passes for them. A little fire without the blood, eh?"

"I have no objections. Ibben would likely be a safe bet, as well." He drummed his fingers on the desk. "And while we're on the subject, do you have anything that could work as a heating implement at sea, without lighting the ship afire?"

"Of course! We could line the ships with the same spells and material we use when dealing with wildfire. The heat in your cabins wouldn't be dissipating into the cold sea. It should offer more protection against the harsh waves, though I confess, I have never made a study of naval combat." He shrugged, "Why would the dragon learn to swim?"

"It saved my life at the Redwyne straits, the fact that Seaskimmer could swim. A bolt took her in the wing, but she got us both safely back to my ship." Baelon shook his head to clear away the unhappy memory. "But such a system in our ships could be useful. Perhaps you could have some of your pyromancers demonstrate it on one, and assuming it is successful, we can proceed to implement it across the fleet."

"Fascinating..." The old Targaryen was always obsessed by the great beasts. He had never been allowed to attempt to bond with one, for a variety of good reasons. His father and brothers had always ridden Vhagar while Orys had always been blessed with a different set of skills. He was about to ask for further details of Seaskimmer's exploits, when he remembered what they were actually discussing.
"Certainly. It's the most basic technique an Alchemist employs before beginning any serious endeavor. We could actually employ our younger initiates who have to yet to master the finer skills. It would be good practice for them, and they often have difficulty finding work so soon, or at least that was the case before we expanded into the public markets."

"Sounds like a good deal to me, then. I'll pick a captain and send him over to your people to make the arrangements."

"Most excellent." He stood up. "I'll have my people waiting. Great things will come of this arrangement, I suspect." Before leaving, he paused and asked, "Indulge my ignorance... how exactly are we related?"

"I'm your nephew." Baelon replied. "My father was your brother Maeron. But don't worry yourself over that. Our family tree is confusing at best."

He frowns. "It's the incest. Thank the Gods my mother was a Lannister, or else Lucerys and I might not have turned out so functional." He leaves to torture some mice in the name of science and impregnate a random servant.

/////
Time: August, 98 A.L
Ser Jaecarys knocked on the door to his father's office. He had considered going to the Manse in the city, but deciding that at this moment he wasn't all that interested in meeting with his father's mistress at this time or the little children his father had with her. He wasn't opposed to the idea of having multiple wives, but he couldn't ignore the effects the choice had made to his mother. He waited patiently for a response from inside for him to enter.

A servant ushered Jaecarys into the office quickly. Baelon rose from behind his desk and came forward to embrace his son.
"Jace! You look well. Your mother wrote to tell me you were coming. I trust the skies were smooth? Where is Maeron?"

Jaecarys embraced his father, though not as long as he had used to as a child, now he was a grown man and that meant that embraces didn't last as long.
"I wish I could say the same about you, Father. The city air seems to take a toll on you, even if it smells a lot less here." he said and gave his father a small grin, before shrugging. "Maeron is probably where Maeron always is, in the arms of some woman. We seperated after we presented ourselves to the Queen."

Baelon laughed at that, turning to fetch some wine for the two of them. "Well, your brother does take after me, none can deny that." He poured two glasses of strongwine, and handed one to Jaecarys. "But you presented yourselves to the Queen already? You should have come to me first. There are some benefits to being on the Small Council, including my sons not having to beg for an audience like seeds and smallfolk."

Jaecarys took the offered glass and took a sip, trying to hide his inexperience from drinking the best he could.
"Well, I wouldn't say that Maeron was all that into the idea of presenting ourselves before seeing you, but I managed to persuade him otherwise. I am six-and-ten now and shouldn't be hiding behind my father anymore. Besides I didn't really go before the Queen to beg,I went and offered me and Aquxax's services to her, I am a second son after all and need to find my own way to greatness, like you did when you were my age."

"That's commendable, but you know damn well that it's different. I was a bastard. You're a Targaryen, and a knight besides." He downed the strongwine like a shot, and poured himself another. "There's no shame in being helped to greatness. We switch out patrols in the Stepstones regularly. I could send you to accompany the new one. You want to serve your Queen, go burn some pirates in her name."

"I am Targaryen in name, Father, that is the difference. You and I were just as much blood of the dragon at that age." he answered with a shrug and took another sip from the glass. "Hunting pirates is all well and good, I don't see how that will earn me greatness however. I guess it's a good way to gain some attention, but I hope that the Queen will send me on something that is more interesting and challenging than untrained pirates."

"If pirates were untrained, they wouldn't be pirates. They'd just be drunks." He shook his head. "I suppose you'd rather go fight skirmishes in the Marches, kill a few Dornishmen so our borders might expand by a few feet this year?"

"Maybe you are right, Father, but I've fought pirates a time or two already and that haven't given me much fame, has it?" he answered with a shrug. "At least with fighting against Dorne, there is a chance for me to earn myself a name, maybe even a keep of my own one day."

"You want a keep, we can get you one more certainly by finding you an heiress." He downed his second glass of wine, and poured a third. "That's even become rather more easy since Rhaena changed the inheritance laws. You want to go fight, fine. But I'll see about finding you a wife in the meantime."
