The maze of streets and alleyways running between the three hills of the city.

After getting off a ship from Pentos, Alexys Darkfyre found herself on the streets of King's Landing, having first asked the ship's quartermaster for directions to the merchant district of the city. She had spent the majority of the journey locked in her cabin, the highlight of that time being the moment she burnt her mother's ridiculous introduction letter to Lord Velaryon. The way to Westeros had been tedious and unpleasant and the street below her feet seemed to move, just like the deck had. Still, happy to finally be off of that damned ship and her pockets full of Pentoshi coins, she set out looking for moneychangers.

There were many moneychangers in the harbor district, each offering a slightly different rate of exchange and shouting over each other in an attempt to win the most business; they all had immaculate sets of scales, large chests presumably filled coin, and burly bruisers armed with cudgels and knives to discourage would-be thieves.

Alexys studied them for a while before walking to one with a reasonable rate that did not look too suspicious to her. She asked him how much the Pentoshi coins in her pouch would give her, without actually showing the money yet.

Dany is informed by the moneychanger that Pentoshi gold coins are wider and fatter than Westerosi dragons, though she is informed that the Pentoshi are more prone to watering their coins down with nickel, so Pentoshi coins often had a lower gold content than Westerosi dragons and thus are worth less. The exchange he offers, after his fee is deducted, is about 70%.
[OOC: For 10 Pentoshi coins, Alexys will get 7 Dragons. For silver, the rate is slightly better, at 10:8]

Alexys fished the smaller pouch of coins from her cloak and exchanged it for Westerosi currency, deciding to leave the rest for later. She studied the man counting the money in order not to get ripped off and left for the city to find a respectable tavern to stay at first, then think about hiring a horse and perhaps a few guards.

She found a decent enough tavern at the base of Aegon's Hill, a clean-looking three-story building that had every indication of being a popular establishment, though not quite so fancy as to cater to the highborn. Primarily foreign merchants frequented an establishment of this quality, seeking to stay for a week or so while they conducted some business or another in the city. The price for a room on the top floor per night was reasonable enough, and compared to several other taverns Alexys had seen, this one was an anomaly in terms of the level quality for the named price.

Alexys paid for the room and left after a bath and a change of clothes, headed towards the richer part of the city to look around and perhaps mingle with nobility to get a better idea of how everything worked on this side of the pond.

Nearly all the noblemen who maintained residences in the capital lived in massive walled manses, generally as high up on Aegon's Hill as they could afford. There were several taverens that catered to primarily men in the employ of one nobleman or another, but generally when the nobles left their hones to go out into the city for wine or whores, they did it quietly and without fanfare.
