Time: Late July, 98 A.L
Ser Jaecarys walked up to the door that led to the chambers of his parents, fairly certain that his mother would be here at this hour of the day. He was dressed in riding leathers, having just returned from a ride upon Aquxax over the Redwyne Straits, and he drew his fingers through his hair and adjusted his clothing before putting his fist to the door and knocked.

Arwyn was in her solar, looking over some records. Her workload had increased with Baelon currently in the city. She could have given her steward more work but a youth spent watching every penny and having to do without most servants had given Arwyn a natural disinclination to rely upon others. She preferred to do the important things herself, with Baelon's assistance when he was available. She put the book aside with a hint of guilty relief and called out "Enter." Whilst waiting, she reached across the table and poured herself a cup of apple juice.

Jaecarys opened the door and stepped inside, offering his mother a smile and a slight bow as he came inside.
"Mother, shouldn't you let Maeron be helping you with those things? He is to be the lord of this house one day." he asked and gave a nod toward the books, before realizing his mistake of not greeting his mother properly.

Arwyn smiled sadly. She had dark rings beneath her eyes and her dress was creased.
"I wish I could. Maeron is not very interested in such duties. They bore him, my dear. He is probably chasing after some common girl or other." Her tone was slightly disapproving, and though she did not mention her husband's infidelities, the implication was tehre all the same. "Maeron is a dear but he is not much good to me here, not yet. He has some wild oats yet to sow."
She stopped, drank some juice. "I am sending Maeron to Kings Landing. It's time he learned the ways of the court. Perhaps you should go with him."

Jaecarys looked worriedly at his mother, concerned about the way she was looking. She wouldn't admit it, but his father's activities were beginning to take a bigger toll on her.
"Maeron should care more about these things, he is the heir after all, but he is not the only one that you can ask for help with the duties. You can't wear yourself out, who will care for the household then?" he said with the worry apparent in his voice.
Jaecarys checked to see that his riding leathers wouldn't leave stains or stain the fabric of the chair, before he took a seat in front of his mother.
"Does Father know he is coming or is that why you are sending me to chaperon my brother? I am not saying that I wouldn't go, but I'd like to know the reason for going."

"I have not yet sent word to your father," Arwyn admitted. "It would be useful if you could take it to the ravenry for me." She toyed with a quill rather absently. "Jaecarys, my dear, you are blood of the dragon. Queen Rhaena is your own cousin. I wish I could protect all you children from the viper's nest of the court, but that is impossible." Her voice sounded rather flat as she said it.
"Your father is Master of Ships, and a dragonrider, and all of you have Valyrian names. You must all take your place as the queen's kin, one day. I cannot hold you back. Your sisters are young enough to be held back a year or two, but I must let my sons go."

Jaecarys looked at his mother, wondering why she couldn't just go to the Ravenry herself, but decided not to ask her for her reasons behind the decision.
"Like I said, I am not opposed to go to court myself. It's like you say, I am blood of the dragon and my future lies with being in the queen's and the future king's company, but I don't want to just go so I can keep an eye on my less than dutiful brother." he said, not mentioning his father which he was sure his mother wanted an eye on as well. "You might be ready to let me go, Mother, but maybe I am not fully ready to just let go of you. Your blood runs in my veins too. And you have never held me back, more you have allowed me to soar and let me test my wings from an early age."

"I had no choice about that," she said. "But it was my own choice to marry a dragon, and I must accept that I cannot always have what I desire." She looked sad again. "You belong at court, but I do not. I go when I must, and if there is a chance to see my sisters, but I have always hated that castle since I learned what manner of people it breeds. Your father has his flaws, Seven bless him, but he is one of the better dragons, even so. Qheen Rhaena is better than her father, but it is bad enough for a man to have children born out of wedlock, let alone a woman."
Arwyn frowned and set down the quill. "Kings Landing is their world, not mine. You need to find your place in it."

Jaecarys looked even more concerned for his mother's well-being as he listened to her, this was not the mother that had raised him. His mother had been a proud and strong woman, but maybe the news of his father's indiscretions had broken her down, and it worried him deeply. He loved his father, had worshiped him greatly as a child, but seeing what his choices were doing to his mother left a bad taste in Jaecarys' mouth and he made a promise to himself to speak to his father about them when he reached King's Landing. He watched as she seemed to have finished the letter to his father, adjusting himself in his seat, before speaking.
"I am sure I'll be able to handle myself perfectly there, and much of that is because of you, Mother. I know that you are sad that you have to let me go, and that you might not trust those born from that castle, but trust in that you have taught me what I need to fend for myself up there."

"I do," she said. "We bred strong children, your father and I. But I cannot shield you forever. You have a duty, my love. You have no keep to inherit, unless your father should win lands to grant you. So you must attract the queen's notice for yourself, so that your future may be provided for. Perhaps you may become a hero in battle, or make a name for yourself in politics."

Jaecarys stiffened a little in his seat, he knew that his mother was telling the truth, but there was still something that made him feel hurt every time he was reminded of his situation. If the gods had only let him been born the heir, the future of the Sunhouse might be brighter than what he himself thought now. His brother was a good brother, but Jaecarys believed in all of his heart that he'd be a terrible lord someday, especially since he seemed to shy himself from all kind of duty.
"I will do you proud, Mother." he said with a determined look.

"I know you will. That's why I am placing my trust in you. You must uphold our honour, Jaecarys. Perhaps your father can use your assistance, to begin with, but I am sure others may do so also. Perhaps you might also remind your father that your sisters are of an age to be betrothed."
Arwyn sighed and reached for her juice. She didn't watn to lose her daughters, any more than she wanted to lose her sons, but her duty to the family had to come first.

"I will try and remind him of that, though I am sure that you would be far better suited to find them husbands." he said and offered her a smile, feeling like there wasn't much more to say concerning the matter. "I will observe the court and see where my skills will be put to best use and make a decision from there, I don't want to be hiding under father's shadow forever."
He glanced over at the letter that laid on the table, before looking at his mother again and offered her a small comforting smile.

"Nor should you, but do not reject any offer of help. Nobody achieved anything without help. My marriage to your father was Queen Rhaella's idea. I needed a husband, and heirs, and your father had no seat of his own. Our marriage gave him a place of his own in peacetime. Our marriage helped your aunts to find suitable husbands too. Else we'd all have been forced to take husbands of lesser rank, or else none at all. I will never forget that."
She smiled slightly. "Will you be ready to leave the day after tomorrow?"

"I will remember your counsel while I'm away, though I doubt I will not see much help from those accustomed to court already, save Father, if it's the nest of vipers as you mentioned earlier." he said with a determined look upon his face, letting his mother know that he had listened to her words throughout their talk.
Jaecarys understood that this was his mother's way of ending the conversation so he sat up and got ready to raise himself from his seat.
"I will be ready to leave. I am not as sure about Maeron though, I bet he'll have a lot of girls to say his goodbye's to, so maybe it's for the best that I leave and see to it that he gets the news before I go to the Ravenry to deliver your message for Father."

"Yes. No doubt it is," Arwyn agreed. She handed over the letter. "Look after yourself, my dear, and come back safely."

Jaecarys rose from his seat and moved to retrieve the letter, giving his mother a comforting smile, and pressed her hand after putting away the letter.
"I will, I promise, Mother. I will see you at dinnertime and say my goodbye's then."
With that he left his mother and headed to find Maeron and then go to the Ravenry.
