Rhaena Targaryen entered King's Landing and was crowned Queen of the Seven Kingdoms in the final months of the eightieth year since Aegon's Conquest. When she took the throne, however, she did so with only one Kingsguard of the Seven traditionally in service to the crown. Ser Moryn Stokeworht had disappeared the day that Maekar seized King's Landing; he had last been seen retrieving Blackfyre from the Royal Vaults and was never seen again, though there are thousands of rumors about his actions after stealing the Sword of Kings. Ser Symon Buckler had been killed by Maekar himself, in a duel in the Throne Room of the Red Keep, and Ser Brandon Snow was killed in the air over Dragonstone during the battle for control of the island and Ser Derryk Moore fell to the blade of Arenya Targaryen in Dragonstone's inner bailey. Ser Olyvar Webber fell to Prince Aegon's troops in the same bailey as his brother Ser Derryk, and Ser Jon Gaunt went over to Maekar and was executed for it upon Rhaena's arrival in the capital; when she was finally crowned, not a single man of her father's Kingsguard was present.
Breaking with tradition, Queen Rhaena neglected to appoint a new Kingsguard after her coronation. In 84 AL, the Queen formally disbanded the Sworn Brotherhood of the Kingsguard, electing to form a new Martial Order to replace them in their duties of guarding the reigning monarch. These new Dragon Guard, as they became known, were something of an amalgamation between the Kingsguard, and the Knights Inquisitor which Maegor the Cruel had used so thoroughly.
Queen Rhaena decreed that a lack of Knighthood was no barrier to entry into the Dragon Guard, provided the candidate had sufficient skill at arms to impress the Queen herself. By allowing others besides knights to join her guard, Rhaena thereby had also removed the restriction against women from serving, and indeed the very first Dragon Guard was her friend, the Dragon Seed known as Yana Snow, rider of Spinel. Dragon Guard were forbidden to hold a lordship, as well as forbidden to marry or to have children, however there was no bar against them keeping lovers or owning land. Though it is not a formal rule, the Commander of the Dragon Guard is always expected to be a dragon rider.
The second member selected for the Dragonguard was a knight on Dragonstone, who particularly distinguished himself in battle fighting under Rhaena's standard, named Ser Tymothy Drake. His skill with both sword and lance are unmatched, and since his appointment to the Dragon Guard in 84 AL he has personally slain two men who made attempts on the Queen's life. The following year she named Ser Matarys Rivers as the third member of the Dragon Guard, at the request of his father, Prince Lucerys Targayren, who was the rider of the dragon Vhagar and also Master of Laws. The fourth Dragon Guard was another soldier from Dragonstone who had distinguished himself in Queen Rhaena's service; despite his low birth, Andrik the Ironborn's skill with a longaxe was a terror to behold. The fifth and sixth men were Ser Jaymes Farman and Ser Jayson Waters, who claimed to be a bastard son of Prince Maeron. Both of them won their crimson cloaks in a contest hosted by the Queen and the other four Dragon Guard, who set for them a series of grueling tests both of martial ability, strength of will, and loyalty to the Queen. Of nine entries, two men died, and the other five failed, leaving Sers Jayson and Jaymes.
In 90 AL, Ser Matarys Rivers petitioned the Queen for the right to travel to Dragonstone to bond a dragon, and Ser Jayson Waters immediately made the same request. Both were granted, and the bastards traveled to Dragonstone in the early months of 91 AL, though only one would return. Ser Jayson Waters attempted to tame the dragon Cyrax, the one-eyed black beast that had been ridden by two traitors in his long life. Whether he lacked sufficient Targaryen blood, or his will was merely too weak to contend with the dragon will never be known, but Ser Jayson was bathed in ivory flames as soon as he approached the dragon, which then swallowed his smoldering carcass whole. Ser Matarys Rivers was the wiser of the two, and took a more cautious route, seeking out the cobalt blue dragon known as Skysong, formerly ridden by Queen Rhaena's elder sister, Aemy. After a week of patience, he succeeded in bonding the blue dragon, and returned to King's Landing with the news riding the proof of his success, but bearing the word of Ser Jayson's failure.
Though it has been almost seven years since Ser Jayson Waters died, Queen Rhaena has not named a new Dragon Guard, having not found a candidate who is suitable. The Dragon Guard currently reside in White Sword Tower, now renamed the Dragon Tower.
The Current Dragon Guard:
Commander Yana Snow (PC) Dragonrider: Spinel
Ser Matarys Rivers Dragonrider: Skysong
Andrik the Ironborn
Ser Jaymes Farman
Ser Tymothy Drake
(Vacant)
