Personality:
Valarr has some of the charm of his father and the ability to persuade others to do what he wants them to do. Like most boys his age he’s interested in swordmanship and the tales of great battles and commanders. Because of his father he has undertaken to learn all he can about dragons and talks about them incessantly.
Background: The elder son of Baelor Targaryen and his wife Elaena Celtigar, Valarr was born in 65, when his father was 18 years old. The addition of a younger brother three years later in 68 AL also saw the death of his mother in childbirth. Valarr and his younger brother were sent by Baelor to their grandfather Lord Kennos Celtigar on Claw Island. His father Baelor most often attended court in Kings Landing becoming well known for his love of archery and women. On rare occasions his father would appear at Claw Island with his dragon Vriskaranea to check on the progress of his two young sons and then would disappear again. In the short visits, Valarr would be fascinated by his father’s beast, often wishing he could ride the female dragon and was always disappointed when Baelor left, given that he sometimes failed to re-appear for over half a year.
When Valarr was twelve, his life changed. His father Baelor Targaryen won great renown for his exploits at the Battle of Casterly Rock and the taking of Lannisport. The same year, Valarr’s uncle, Baelor's older brother, Prince Aenar attempted to claim the throne. He failed and Maegor II, became the King. Valarr’s uncles, Baelor and Aerion Strongdragon bent the knee and his cousins, the children of Aenar’s Rhaegar, Visenya and Elseyris were somewhat surprisingly spared and placed under house arrest. Having seen what happened to his brother’s children, Baelor preferred to keep his own children in relative obscurity not daring to visit them in Claw Island for a long time after his brother's death.
The following year Valarr was squired to his eldest maternal uncle Alyn Celtigar, the heir to Claw Island, while his uncle Tiberys followed Maekar Waters to Dorne . Two years later, Valarr’s father Maegor was killed at the Battle of Oldtown. Valarr, despite almost never seeing his father, was devastated at the news and swore to tame his father’s dragon one day in order to honor his father’s memory. Upon the news of King Maegor’s death and the taking of the throne by the Kings bastard son Maekar Water, his grandfather determined that holding a potential Targaryen dragonrider on Claw Island was likely to bring down one or perhaps even both of the other sides’ wrath upon them. Reluctantly he released Valaar from his uncle’s service as a squire and asked Valarr whether he preferred to be sent to Kings Landing or Dragonstone. Knowing that his father had served under the heroic Prince Aegon and knowing that his father’s dragon Vriskaranea was probably on Dragonstone, Valarr chose Dragonstone. Giving Valarr a letter explaining his legitimate parentage, Lord Kennos placed Valarr on a boat to make the relatively short trip from Claw Island to Dragonstone.
