Background:
The result of a dalliance between Maegor the Cruel and the wife of Lord Jorah of Tarth, Jorian was something of an awkward and embarrassing feature of the family, especially since his mother died giving birth to him. He was brought up by his mother's family, the Lord of Tarth showing an unorthodox amount of care and obligation for the boy, despite already having two trueborn sons. Perhaps the Lord of Tarth saw some value in keeping a connection to the Targaryen family. Jorian grew up calling Lord Tarth 'father', and was close to his older brothers.
When he was 16, he was sent to Braavos, to look after the family's holdings there, and oversee their dealings with the Iron Bank. There was not terribly much work to be done, so he spent much of his time pleasure-seeking, but he also made useful contacts, and was able to obtain blade training from one of Braavos' finest swordsmen.
The relatively secure tedium broke just after Jorian's 32nd nameday. He received a letter from his father, informing him of the terrible news that his brothers had been lost at sea. However, it also carried the news that, with the trueborn heirs to Tarth gone, Jorian's father wanted to legitimize him, and make him the new heir. This would require Jorian to return to the home of his childhood, and accompany his father in petitioning the King for a royal decree.
