"Harrenhal is massive, my lord," Ser Ethan said. "I do not know how many men Lord Harroway can call to his banner, but it is said that the stables can accommodate horses for ten thousand knights, and the castle itself can house a fifty thousand men, and if fully provisioned that many men are said to be able to survive for up to a year."
That was an outrageous statement to make about any castle, but great myths had sprung up around Harrenhal, and in truth it was hard to know the strength of any castle until it was directly tested; if well provisioned, even a small number of men might be able to hold against many times their own number in a castle of decent size.

"His vassals are other concern. I'll send word for King Maekar asking for a royal pardon, and whichever other conditions his grace agrees with, for those who stand beside us." Maelys stated, already planning the letter he'd send to the King.
"And I don't believe it shall be prolonged for that long, be it five or fifty thousand. Firstly, I shall try a diplomatic victory over Lord Lyonel, bring him to accept peacefully the king's conditions, for I know him for a good and honorful man. But it he refuses, I fear it shall be needed a thougher measure."

"Battle? Well, we all know what happens when dragons come to Harrenhal," Ser Raymund said with a shrug. "We can deal with Harroway if we must, but it may be that he joins with us in any case. We shall see/"
"Yes, a peaceful resolution would be best," Ryman agreed. "My father would certainly prefer it. He is most anxious about having division between his bannerlords. The Blackwoods and Brackens are bad enough."

"Then it is settled... Tomorrow we march for Harrenhal." Maelys exclaimed cheerfully, it would be his first actual battle, or siege, or whatever it would turn to be, he wanted to impress.
"I want men to start foraging for the engines already, the sooner we get them up the sooner we'll march to the Vale. We'll need trabuchets, ladders and a battering ram... Corion is a dragon, but still young we can't rely all on him to do the Black Dread's work." He had a plan already in mind, maybe it would cause some casualties on their side, but it'd be certainly effective.
"And something flammable, for sure. Send for tar and oil from the nearby holdings, put it on Oldtown's account." For a 38 year old men, the Lord of Oldtown looked as excited as a six year old getting his first practice sword.

"It will be done," Ser Raymund promised. "Though it will make our progress slower if we must begin the siege engines and transport the wood and oil."

"There's no need to transport the flammables in our main march, send orders for them to be delivered at the siege, not before it." Maelys pointed out.
"Yes, this is a fact... We shall be slowed down" He acknownleged, not losing his high expectations. "That's why I want scouts to be set out to counter his; I want the roads closed, no peasant or caravan goes to Harrenhal; and I want every single raven shot down and it's messages brought to me. We must do our best to prevent Harroway from learning about our advances."

"That can be done," Raymund agreed, though he gave Maelys a worried look. "You do know, my lord, that the men will have to be put on short rations, and tempers will fray? A siege is dirty, long and tedious. There is no glory in it. Should it come to storming the castle, that is a bloody business and there's not much glory in that either, for most men."

"The whole business of war is a tedious, dirty and bloody affair, Ser." Maelys smile faded, he was still excited about it, some peasant casualties would not bother his mood, but he found it better to conceal a bit of it.
"And about the supplies,I may have solution to boost our reservoir, but it will depend on Harroway's vassals' answers. If it does not work, then, as I said, it won't be a long one."

"Of course, my lord. What solution is that?" Raymund asked.

"I'm sorry, good ser." Maelys frowned menacingly, trying to mask his own incompetence for the plan was not, in fact, complete. "But for now, it's confidential. I may have to discuss it first with his highness."
"Let us feast for now, huh?!?!?! While we still have plenty of food." He said, producing a kind smile.

"I'll drink to that," Ryman said, filling all their goblets with wine.
Raymund Rivers, however, scowled in disapproval. He was a frugal sort in both his diet and attire, and did not approve of feasting when they were on the march. "A solder eats when he can, it's true, but he should not overindulge. Extravagance is a sin," he replied. "I do hate to see good food wasted."
So they ate, and Rymun drank a little too much wine with his meal, causing him to become very animated, while his uncle looked on disapprovingly and ate the plainest fare at the table whilst sipping at his wine.

Ser Ethan Smallwood ate little and drank less, eschewing the rich lordly fare for simpler food that would be easy to digest on the march. He'd long ago learned that fine meals were better enjoyed at home in comfort, and tended to be wasted while campaigning.
