Background: One of the innumerous children of Prince Maeron , Maelys was never given much attention by his parents. In compensation, he had already a dragon egg assigned to him even before he was born. Corion, as it came to be known, hatched the same day the boy was born, thus predicting the strong bond they’d come to develop.
His parents lack of interest also granted Maelys one thing, a full time tuition with the Red Keep’s Master at Arms, to whom he passed to admire as a father. Since his youth he enjoyed wielding a sword, but the harsh regimented training was never of his liking. Maelys often skipped his lessons to explore the city at Aegon’s Hills feets, there he’d smudge his hair in dirt hiding the only thing he knew differentiated him from the people down below. And when he returned by the end of the day, followed by dozens of street urchins he called friends, he’d get scolded and punished by his tutor.
It was during those escapades he grew his aspiration to become Commander of the City Watch, for he saw with his own eyes how the big people treated their “inferiors”. It was no pride that drove him when he accepted the post, it was the feeling that if someone could change all that bullshit, it was him.
In the year of 77 AL after King Maegor's coronation ceremony and weeks of sleepless work nights, Maelys' had a big fight with his wife, Lyara Bar Emmon, he to his overworking and lacking as husband and father. The next day she fled to Sharp Point with both his twins, Mianna and Valarr, never to come back to the city and depriving Maelys of ever seeing the children again.
His depression lasted for two moons, he grew thinner and sickly. Death was at bay when he found a new light to guide him... One night, a watchman asked his chief if he could be substituted for his night's duties on the watch of Aernar's daughters. As work was the only thing that deprived him from the thought o his love he took it himself, and that's when a father without his children met the children without their father. They talked, and occasionally Maelys would assigned himself for the duty... In time he became their mentor in the court of King Maegor II, a wing under which the children could hide from the sneers of the who blamed them for their father's crimes.
