"Perhaps Gulltown would be our best target. Strategically valuable yet less defensible than the Eyrie. An unexpected attack from two dragons should be sufficient."

"Too close to Dragonstone, I think," Maekar replied. "You'd have to take a wide loop around the bay, and if the lords report to Aegon on your movements you may find a welcoming party waiting there for you. Lord Grafton may yet also break away from Lord Arryn in my favor, and if that is a possibility I do not wish to alienate him. The Eyrie is impregnable from the ground, but its defenses will be no match for two dragons in the sky. Even if you cannot attack the castle itself, you can certainly destroy the approaches to it, and strand the Arryns inside until they can make repairs."

Aerion crossed his arms. "It shall be done."

"Maelys, for the time being I want you to fly to Riverrun," Maekar said, turning to the Lord of Oldtown. "Make sure that Lord Tully still intents to support me as he promised; do not be overly threatening, but make sure that he knows that the benefits of supporting me may be outweighed by the penalties if he does not. If he maintains his loyalty, I want you to oversee the raising of his army, and when two thousand men have been assembled he has orders to march to the Trident Ford. You and Corion should remain with the army, in case any Valemen sally out of their mountains to attack. When I send Aerion against the Arryns, he will stop at your camp, and you're to fly with him against them," he added.

"Said and done, your majesty. I'll keep him on his toes." Maelys stuffed his chest and gave a bow, before leaving he gave Aerion a grin.
