The archealogical record shows a Hall called "Heorot" in Sweden, that corresponds roughly to the 6th Century (Beowulf's period) and inside the territory of the tribe he was supposedly a part of. Beyond that, there's not much. The epic story might be significant exaggerations of the exploits of some Viking warrior of the era, but who can say?

Similarly, there's historical evidence that something halted the Saxon advance across Britain for a period of about 20 years, in the late 400s AD, though they eventually spread across the entire island after the fall of whatever local warlord was keeping them at bay. That's where the tradition of King Arthur most likely comes from, and when the Normans invaded in 1066 they altered the stories about King Arthur to make him into a Chivalric knight-King who presided over a medieval court. Basically, by taking the local heroic traditions and amalgamating them with Norman society, they were trying to further consolidate their hold over the island.
