Sarella looked down at Rhaegar with a thoughtful expression. "I see your talent for fine speeches has triumphed yet again. Strangely, I believe you sincere in your wish to protect Dorne. As I am sincere in my own desire to protect my home. We have no love for oathbreakers here in Dorne but I cannot believe that you had any duty to your Targaryen kin if it is indeed true that they have belittled you and failed to value the loyalty you previously showed to them. I see that you are quick to disown your Targaryen kin whilst espousing your Dornish blood. With that in mind, it occurs to me that there may yet be some hope for you, if you are determined to throw off your past as a dragon and embrace a new future." She looked down at him. "Will you swear fealty to me, Rhaegar?"

"My Targaryen kin have disowned me, my lady." Rhaegar said simply. He thought for a moment.
"I will swear my sword to you, against all comers, while I am on Dornish soil." said Rhaegar.. "As is your rightful due as Princess of Dorne which I freely and publicly recognise."
He smiled. "However after three years of virtual imprisonment in Kings Landing, I value my newly won freedom. My swearing is on condition that I may freely enter and leave Dorne as I wish. I have an urge to explore the world especially to the east. Maybe even as far as Old Valyria. Upon entering Dorne I become your man. Outside Dorne I am my own man, although I will also swear never to act against Dorne."

The princess was silent for a moment, as she thought about it. "And why would you wish to explore the world when Dorne could offer you sanctuary and an honourable life? Do you plan to set up a new Valyrian empire?"

Daenya laughed. "Do as you must. May I be brought to my room? I have heard enough."

The princess was silent for a moment, as she thought about it. "And why would you wish to explore the world when Dorne could offer you sanctuary and an honourable life? Do you plan to set up a new Valyrian empire?" Rhaegar smiled. "No my lady. I have no such plans." He looked his kinswoman squarely in the face. "To explore the world and to have knowledge of the world can only add to the skills and experience I can offer you and Dorne. For example, rumors persist that there may be more effective methods of killing dragons than the crude methods that we used in killing Vandaras. Such knowledge may well exist to the east. Or so I have heard and read."

A squad of guards formed around Daenya and led her away to her room.
Sarella looked at Rhaegar. "Why do you think that? Why would the lands in the east know how to kill dragons? Such knowledge would be useful to me, but you may sure I would require you to remain in Dorne for some time, in order to prove your loyalty beyond all doubt."

Rhaegar nodded respectfully at her words. "Perhaps we might discuss that further in private my lady. I have an amount of knowledge about dragons and other matters that could well concern Dorne that I would share with you."

"That would be acceptable," Sarella agreed. "first, though, you will kneel and swear your fealty to me, else all this talk is for nothing."

"On the conditions I outlined earlier?" asked Rhaegar quickly.

"Yes. That will serve. But I want it done, and done now," Sarella answered.

Rhaegar's smile never left his face. He knew the princess did not quite trust him because of his name and background, but equally he did not trust the princess. She had a reputation of being a shrewd politician and he knew there was a reason for any request that she made, including this one.
"So I may freely and safely enter and leave Dorne as I wish, irrespective of any fealty sworn to you here in Dorne?" Rhaegar repeated clearly to make sure there was no ambiguity either for the Princess or himself as well as for the crowd of Dornish lords and courtiers who were listening intently.
"And any fealty I swear to you applies on Dornish soil only? Outside Dorne I will owe fealty to no man or woman and my actions are my own? He continued to smile brightly. "Forgive my asking for clarification my lady, but I wish this to be crystal clear for all of us."
Rhaegar's eyes met hers. "That way future difficulties, if they arise, and I would anticipate they do not, are avoided."

Sarella's voice was firm. "You may enter and leave Dorne as you please, so long as you do nothing to bring shame or dishonour upon my house wherever you go. Dorne protects its own but I shall not protect any man who shames himself, or me."

Rhaegar nodded in acceptance and knelt. He spoke in a clear loud voice, in the formal language he had been taught by his tutors at Kings Landing
"Then I, Prince Rhaegar of House Targaryen swear fealty to you Princess Sarella Nymeros Martell, Princess of Dorne for any lands I may acquire by inheritance or marriage that themselves currently owe fealty to House Martell. I also swear that in return for free and safe passage in and out of Dorne or any lands owing fealty to House Martell, that my fealty to Princess Sarella Nymeros Martell will be given freely and totally, (saving my personal desire to leave or enter Dorne), when my person is present on any and all lands so owing that same current fealty to Princess Sarella Nymeros Martell Princess of Dorne."

"Well and good," she said. "Will you swear to uphold Dornish law and customs, and to do honour to your adopted home, and to do honour to House Martell and our bannerlords?"

"I swear to uphold Dornish law and customs in Dorne." replied Rhaegar solemnly. "I swear to do honor to Dorne, House Martell and to their sworn bannerlords."

"Good." Sarella was smiling now. "I am satisfied with that. Be sure you keep your vows."

Rhaegar nodded. "I shall do so, my lady. May I request a private audience at your convenience. I have much to tell you about dragons."

"You may," she said. "I will inform you when the time comes. In the meantime, you may speak to Prince Trystane if you have any requirements that cannot be provided by my stewards. for now, though, you will want to rest. I am sure."

"Rhaegar bowed. "Thank you my lady." He signalled to the rest of his party who began to file out of the throne room.
