Queen Rhaella TargaryenAge: 40 Dragon: Amethyst - Esteemed, purple with silver markings. Amethyst came from an egg brought over from Valyria. She hatched the same day that Aegon began his Conquest. Sometimes called The Purple Queen. Rhaella is Maegor's sister, wife and queen. She is one of the king's chief counsellors and plays a major role in the court and the governance of the realm. She is known to be friendly and kind and is devoted to her husband, children and dragon. Though she has several children, a lifetime spent in the training yard and riding her dragon have kept her slender and fit. She was raised on Dragonstone and bonded with Amethyst as a girl of twelve. At sixteen she married her brother as planned by her parents and grandsire. It was a match meant to preserve the bloodlines, and the two were not given a choice. While Rhaella liked and respected Maegor as her brother, she felt no great love or desire for him at the beginning of their marriage. Yet as they got accustomed to one another, their relationship strengthened into much deeper feelings. In the early years there was often conflict between the two yet now they usually seem to be of one mind. Rhaella was presented with the sword Dark Sister as a wedding gift from her grandsire, Maegor the Cruel. The sword's previous owner, Queen Visenya, was Rhaella's heroine. Rhaella passionately hates the Faith Militant for killing her father and uncle and longs to see the institution destroyed. She has taken part in a number of battles, both from the air and by wielding Dark Sister. Her greatest worry is that Lady Jeyne and her children will present a rallying point for the crown's enemies and endanger the future of her own children. In the meantime, she shows favour to Aenar's widow and children in the hope they will have no cause to rebel. Rhaella was only two years old when Maegor the Cruel became king, so the war with the Faith Militant has been going on throughout her life. As a young girl she was kept well away from any danger and ten, when she grew to womanhood she was a young wife learning to adapt to her new situation, and at the insistence of her kin the only role she was allowed in the war was that of an aerial scout until her first pregnancy. Once she got pregnant with the Prince of Dragonstone, she had to spend most of the next few years at the Red Keep caring for her children and helping to defend the city and crownlands from incursions by the Faith Militant though even then she chafed at the restrictions placed upon her. But by 69AL, with her youngest daughter Daenya now two years old, Rhaella was determined to do her part in protecting the Seven Kingdoms. She had always kept herself fit and active, training with the sword and flying with Amethyst. Pleading with her grandsire, she was allowed to take part in subduing an uprising among the Ironborn, in which she, accompanied by her bastard brother and close friend Valarr Stone, burned half Lord Harlaw's fleet, and Harlaw himself, before the Ironborn surrendered. And so Rhaella knew herself to have played her part in protecting House Targaryen. She then turned her attentions to helping deal with the Faith Militant. Three years after the Harlaw ships burned, Rhaella accompanied her father to Oldtown, where she eventually saw Ser Hector slay both Maeron and his dragon. Until that point Rhaella's conflicts had taken place mostly on dragonback. She had rarely been given the opportunity to use Dark Sister in earnest but she used it then, when she saw her father fall. Maddened with fury, she flew Amethyst low and cut a path through the enemy ranks. Though she never reached Ser Hector himself, Rhaella threw herself from the saddle when Amethyst was busy devouring burning men. She launched herself at the Bastard of Uplands, a famed warrior sworn to the Warrior's Sons and the two engaged in a long and terrible duel that left Rhaella battered and bleeding from several wounds, and Ser Merrett missing his head. It was Valarr who found her lying there when the battle had finished and took her to safety. Rhaella was tended by the camp maester before she watched her father's corpse burn. She wept in the privacy of her own tent and swore a vow that she would see the Faith Militant destroyed. Since then, she does what she can to help combat her sworn foes. When Aenar Targaryen was slain by Rhaella's husband Maegor II, Rhaella rejoiced that the rebel had been slain. But not for long. The same day Aenar was killed, she called for her bastard brother and the two raised a small force and headed south to the Stormlands to subdue Aenar's tiny host, waiting in the Rainwood for the call to arms. They engaged in combat with the rebels (a combined force of Warrior's Sons, Stormlanders and Dornishmen) but the fight had gone out of Aenar's rebels with the announcement of his death. They soon surrendered when they saw their men burning. Hostages were taken and a few ringleaders executed, but the rebellion ended almost as soon as it began

Laena Targaryen, Princess DowagerAge: 62 Dragon: Vermilion - Tempered, red with black markings. Vermilion was hatched 50 years ago by the 12 year old Laena, allegedly through a blood sacrifice. Sometimes called the Red Demon. Laena is the mother of Maegor II and Queen Rhaella. She is the widow of Prince Maeron and the daughter of Aenys I. She was significantly older than her brother Jaehaerys so she married her cousin Maeron instead. As a young bride she prayed to the gods of Valyria that her husband would take her brother's place as heir to the throne. This finally happened when Maegor the Cruel claimed the throne after Aenys' death but Laena's joy was ruined when the Faith Militant declared war on House Targaryen. She was forced to flee to Dragonstone with her kin when and soon after to watch the men she loved go to war. This culminated in her husband's death in Oldtown, which also put an end to Laena's death of queenship as Maeron predeceased his father. When Maegor the Cruel died, Laena's son, Maegor II, became the next king. Laena adores her son Maegor and is devoted to his cause, but she resents the fact that her daughter gets to wear the crown fate denied her. It was she who stopped Jeyne Yronwood and her children from fleeing the city after Aenar's death, and who confined them Maegor's Holdfast until her son judged it safe to give them freedom of the castle. No warrior, Laena prefers not to take part in the crown's wars or to risk her dragon in aerial combat, so she is most often to be found residing in the Red Keep in times of trouble, helping to govern the castle. She is a skilled healer though it is rumoured, particularly among the servants, that she practises sorcery. Those who are old enough whisper of Princess Alysanne's death, though never to Laena's face. Of all the living Targaryens, Laena is the one most hated by the Faith Militant, and wandering septons often preach of her evil counsel and demonic powers. Laena hates them in turn, blaming them for the death of her beloved husband. Laena is famous for her sharp-tongue and her dragon, Vermilion, is as cranky as she is. She hates her nephew Aenar's children and frequently urges Maegor to put them to death to protect his dynasty from usurpers. She is cold to Jeyne and the children in public.

Lady Jeyne YronwoodAge: 32 Jeyne is a flirty, friendly woman but she deeply resents the fact that she is a prisoner in Kings Landing. As a young girl she had a happy life in Dorne until Aenar Targaryen flew over the Dornish mountains and the two fell in love. Their happiness was marred by Aenar's desire to claim back the throne his father Jaehaerys had yielded to Maegor the Cruel. Aenar made his move when Maegor the Cruel died, seeking friends those unhappy with Maegor's rule and from his Dornish goodfather. But the rebellion fizzled out when Aenar died fighting Maegor II on dragonback. Jeyne was terrified that she and her children would be executed but instead they have been allowed to remain at the Red Keep, though she knows their safety can never be guaranteed. As a Dornishwoman, Jeyne has no dragon of her own, but she sometimes rode with her husband. She still misses her husband but hopes to find a new love. She hates King Maegor and secretly hopes to see her son crowned and taking revenge for his father's death.

Ser Valarr Stone, the Queen's Champion DECEASEDAge: 35 Dragon; Ithilgore - Esteemed, dark green with cream underbelly. Vhagar's progeny hatched during the reign of Aegon the Conqueror. Claimed by Valarr 15 years ago. Valarr is the king's bastard brother, fathered on Roslin Hunter during a visit to the Eyrie. Despite his name, Valarr grew up believing himself as good as a prince. As a boy he squired at Dragonstone and was knighted at seventeen. But Valarr was determined to master a dragon. He returned to Dragonstone three years later and claimed Ithilgore. Thereafter he travelled as his whim struck, or else serving the needs of the crown in its wars against the Faith Militant. Valarr wields a greatsword and is fiercely loyal to King Maegor and his other trueborn siblings, though he and the Princess Dowager famously hate one another. He enjoys, hunting, fighting and womanising and has sired many bastards throughout the realm. Even Valarr has lost count of the number. As a squire Valarr took part in some fighting in Hull when a few malcontents attempted to rouse the island to rebellion. It was a dismal failure but the boy blooded his sword for the first time, hacking a man to death without the finesse he would later display in his kills. He was fourteen. At seventeen he was knighted after distinguishing himself in battle against the clansmen of the Vale, who had been promised dominion over the Vale if they agreed to help the rebels. Valarr helped one of his father's men from Dragonstone bring down a huge chieftain with a gigantic axe, dealing the death blow himself. His knighthood took place on the bloody field. Soon after he went to Dragonstone. Valarr was a dragonrider by the time he fought at Bitterbridge, burning many men atop Ithilogore and, when the dragon swooped low, he slew several knights and men at arms and even took two knights hostage. He kept the ransom money. He didn't see Ser Hector kill his uncle Gaemon but is thankful he didn't cross blades with the famous knight. Several years later, Valarr joined his sister, the then Princess Rhaella to burn the fleet of the rebellious Ironborn lord Rodrick Harlaw. The two went in separately, Valarr first. He swooped in, setting fire to the sails of Lord Harlaw's flagship. Though the Ironmen panicked, Harlaw had some archers on board. He attempted to resist, while others of his men doused the flames. Harlaw did not yield. So Rhaella flew in and together the pair set the fleet alight. Docked off the Westerland coast, the men who were not killed fled screaming for the hills. Valarr left Rhaella in charge of the burning and set off after the fleeing men. Many were roasted alive before they surrendered, and Rhaella's count of the ships told that half the Harlaw fleet had been lost. Valarr's next big engagement was in Oldtown. This was the fiercest fight he had ever known. He burned many men alive from dragonback and killed Lord Bulwer in single combat when the man tried to mount Ithilgore to get at Valarr. A little later he saw Ser Hector slay his father and his father's dragon. He fought hard, even crossing swords with Hector this time, albeit briefly. But the press of battle drove them apart. The last Valarr saw of the knight in that battle was when several of the Targaryen men were cut down. But as the battle neared its end, Valarr saw Amethyst loosing a jet of flame at a heap of dead men and he realised that she was riderless. He hurried across the field, cutting down anyone who got in his way, until he saw Rhaella lying still and covered in blood. A tiny moan ecaped her lips and he feared she was dying. Next to her lay the Bastard of Uplands, and close by his severed head. Rhaella still clutched Dark Sister like a lifeline. A man stepped forward swinging a sword down at the princess. Valarr stepped in the man's way, parried the blow and drove his blade into the man's throat. He took Rhaella to safety and thereafter became known as the Queen's Champion. When Aenar Targaryen rebelled, Valarr slew Ser Ronnet of the Rainwood in single combat. Ronnet's lover, Lord Owen Dondarrion, committed suicide and the Dondarrion men surrendered to the Targaryen forces.

Lady Taena StormAge: 19 Dragon: Victory - Hatchling, blue and silver. Victory's egg comes from a clutch produced by Amethyst twenty years ago. The egg was so small nobody ever thought it would produce a living dragon but Princess Laena gave it to Taena, who hatched it a year ago. Taena is Prince Gaemon's bastard daughter by Sallei Penrose, who was thrown out of her father's household for yielding up her maidenhead. Taena spent her earliest years at the Kings Landing manse given to her mother, but she never knew her father, who died when she was very young. When she was seven, Princess Laena visited the manse and brought Taena back to the Red Keep as her cupbearer. At first Taena was scared of the princess but the two settled into a good relationship as Taena learned what it meant to be a member of the family. Laena sometimes took her up on Vermilion but Taena had no expectation of her own dragon, until one day her grandmother gave her a small blue egg she had used as a paperweight for years. Taena would sing to it in broken Valyrian and eventually the egg hatched. Now the slender girl and the young dragon are a common sight in Kings Landing. Victory is too small to ride yet, currently about the size of a wolf. Taena is a good-natured girl who enjoys archery. She tries to be discreet in her occasional romantic liaisons, but fortunately nobody cares very much who a bastard shares her bed with.

Grand Maester BenedictAge: 77 Benedict is a fat old man with a kindly nature who does what he can to help the poor of Kings Landing, such as sending the junior maesters out with food and alms. The only thing he loves better than books is drawing illuminations in brightly coloured inks. His chambers are decorated with his work. He is an ardent supporter of House Targaryen and hopes to see them reconciled with the Faith Militant. It also troubles him that many of his fellows at the Citadel are supporters of the Faith Militant. As a boy Benedict was raised at Sunflower Hall as a kinsman of Lord Cuy and he speaks fondly of Oldtown, hoping to see the fighting ended there. He is one of the few people Princess Laena actually likes and who likes her, since the two share an interest in the healing arts. He has been the Grand Maester for eight years.

Rorio Mathoris, envoy from Tyrosh
Age: 52
Rorio is a wealthy Tyroshi nobleman with a love of the sea and travel. His wife's favourite cousin is a lady in waiting at the Archon's court, which gives him a small connection to the most powerful man in Tyrosh, one which he exploits as often as possible. So when the opportunity came to travel to Westeros regarding the Tyroshi mercenaries hired by the Iron Throne, Rorio immediately volunteered for the task in order to show the Archon how useful he could be. He set sail with his favourite ship and a skilled crew, alongside an entourage of servants and his eldest daughter. Rorio has curly hair cut to his shoulders and a pointed beard (think Charles II Stuart). Both hair and beard are dyed jade green.

Lady Adara DondarrionAge: 26 Adara is the daughter of Prince Gaemon, commonly known as the Whore of Blackhaven because she sleeps with any man who takes her fancy, regardless of rank. Sex is her chief - some say only - hobby. She has lost count of the number of men she has slept with and it's alleged she might have dallied with another woman once or twice. She is extremely selfish in nature and her body is the only thing she shares freely. She is often tipsy. Adara looks more like a Karstark than a Targaryen, favouring thin, clingy fabrics that show off more than is decent. Even her thicker clothes show a lot of cleavage. As a young girl growing up in the court of Maegor the Cruel, with his multiple wives, Adara was accustomed to the notions of sexual freedom. She gave her maidenhead to a young knight at the age of fourteen and the two enjoyed a torrid love affair that lasted three months. Following a fight that ended their relationship, Adara engaged in a number of one night stands until her grandmother Laena reasoned that she might as well put her sexual energy to good use and arranged for her to marry Owen Dondarrion, heir to Blackhaven. Adara was fifteen. But despite Adara's obvious charms, Ser Owen went to their bedding with clear reluctance and the first weeks of their marriage were not enjoyable for Adara. Owen spent little time with his bride, their bedroom antics proving rare and unsatisfying for either one of them. Two months into their marriage Adara caught him abed with his squire, Ser Ronnet of the Rainwood. A confession followed, leaving Adara confused. It was at first suggested she join their antics, and though she participated with relish, the two young men were more interested in each other and Adara did not conceive...until the night Owen's handsome brother Renly came home from the war. He and Adara ended up in bed together on many occasions, with Owen pretending not to notice. Adara soon conceived and since Renly's sex drive was as high as her own, all were satisfied with the arrangement. Adara bore a son, whom she named Selwyn. Later on, Renly was killed in the Battle of Oldtown. Owen had no interest in resuming relations with his wife, so Adara, bored, began sleeping with any man who took her fancy. It was said in Blackhaven that she bedded a different man almost every night. She bore a second son, whom she named Orys. Owen was genuinely fond of children and desired a family so he recognised both Adara's boys as his own. Disaster struck in 77AL. While Adara was in Kings Landing mourning the death of her grandsire, and finding new lovers, her husband's paramour, Ser Ronnet, convinced the weak-willed Owen, now Lord Dondarrion, to give their support to the Pretender, Aenar Targaryen. When the rebel army gathered in the Rainwood, Adara was questioned regarding her knowledge of the affair. She was forced to confess that she had been too busy sleeping around to know or care what Owen and Ronnet did. Meanwhile, Queen Rhaella and Valarr Stone were busy dealing with the rebels. Ser Ronnet was slain in single combat with Valarr, though the duel was definitely skewed in Valarr's favour. Maddened with grief, Owen threw himself from Blackhaven's tallest tower. Adara's son Selwyn became Lord Dondarrion and was placed in the charge of a castellan since Adara was not considered an appropriate guardian after her failure to report her husband's treachery. She remains in Kings Landing having short liaisons with a succession of lovers. She has since born another bastard, a 1 year old girl named Valyria, but even Adara doesn't know who the father is. Selwyn is now 9 years old, Orys 6. Adara is one of the few adult Targaryens who took no part in the war. She was never interested in dragons as a child and later she was much too interested in sex. She has no dragon of her own. She has begun to consider taking on a hatchling but has made no decision as yet.

Lady Arwyn Cuy Age: 18 Arwyn was raised the eldest of four girls born to Lord Cuy of Sun House and his Mullendore bride. As her mother could not bear a son who lived beyond infancy, Arwyn grew up knowing herself to be her father's heir. As House Cuy remained loyal to House Targaryen, they were denied the protection of Oldtown and the Faith Militant, and frequently had to fight them. So with most of the men born on Cuy lands forced to train as warriors, the women had to care for the farms and do many of the jobs their husbands would do in peacetime. Tis meant the Cuys had to do without many servants, most of them elderly. So Arwyn and her sisters grew up having to prepare their own food and clean the castle. Arwyn showed a particular talent for baking. Lord Cuy died a few months ago, leaving Arwyn as his heir. She is betrothed to Baelon Waters at the recommendation of Queen Rhaella. Arwyn and Baelon swore an oath in the castle sept and afterwards became lovers, though they are not formally married.
