"Did yer now? Impressive," he scoffed, though he had seen so many tamings over the years the spectacle of a dragonrider had ceased to impress him in truth. "Llways said he preferred women. What d'yer want wi' me then? Yer already got yer dragon. Unless yer wants t'see the eggs and hatchlings?"

"Well," she said, "I don't know a lot about how to care for the Ghost, or how to command him most effectively. I was hoping I could learn something about dragons."
She paused, and asked, "What of Edmund Waters? I know he had planned to tame a dragon as well - you say he visited you?"

"He did. Saw him flying off not two hours ago, said he was headed for Kings Landing. I'm no dragonrider meself but I've seen many riders over t'years. And many young dragons too. Commands, you need to be firm and make clear signals. What don't you know about caring for him? Dragons like cooked meat. But they can cook it in their own fire."

"Edmund tamed a dragon?" Vira was interested now. He had not been on her mind very much, and struck her as unimpressive when they had journeyed to the Dragonmont together, but Edmund taming a dragon changed everything. He suddenly acquired a new sheen in her eyes. "Which dragon did he tame? Is it as big and powerful as Aegerys?"
She listened carefully to what he said. "I didn't know they liked cooked meat. How do you make the breathe fire on command? Do you just yell "fire" or something?"

"T'lad tamed Aelyrion," Dake answered after a moment's thought. "A young beast, wi' golden scales. T'Ghost is more powerful to be sure. But young dragons fly faster."
He paused, reached for a skin of ale and took a drink.
"It's up to t'rider to command dragon as they please. But most use the tongue o' Valyria. It's like training dogs, they say. More dangerous, o' course. In Valyrian, t'word for dragonfire is dracarys. Most riders use that."

Vira lost a bit of interest upon hearing that Edmund hadn't tamed a more powerful dragon than hers.
"Dracarys," she repeated thoughtfully. "Likely Aegerys already knows that, since he's been ridden before." She smiled. "Thank you, Dake. I'd be happy to go and look at the hatchlings with you. I can even help you take care of them for a bit. I have nothing to do, and the Ghost is hunting."

"Most kind of yer," he said, getting up. "Can go now. Just come back to eat and drink a while. I'm ready to go now. There ain't nothing like the hatcheries, girl."
He grinned with pride, as if he'd produced his own dragon eggs and hatchlings.

She smiled and jumped to her feet, following eagerly.

Aemon and Benjen head up the volcano to the cave of the Dake, the old man who see's to the care of the hatchlings and other going's on of the Dragonmont. After a brief amount of time that it took Aemon to remember where the cave was he peaked into the entrance to see if the man was present.

Dake was sitting at his fire drinking from a wineskin. He waved them over. "My lords," he said, recognising Aemon from long ago. "Can I be of service to you? Is it the lad's turn for a dragon now?"

"Both of us actually." Aemon says remorsefully. "Azuria, was sadly slain by the faith during the battle." He says with a knot in his throat. "But the kid is first, if there are any young dragons that he can look at."
Benjen goes to speak about getting a hatchling but is quickly silenced with a look from his dad remembering the argument that his parents had concerning giving him a dragon and his mother putting the limit on him having a younger dragon, that would be safer to tame.

"We have a number of young hatchlings, and some eggs too," Dake revealed. "The young prince may choose any he likes to attempt the bonding."

Aemon turns to his son and waits for him to speak.
"It would be an honor, to see them so that I may try bonding with one of them." Benjen claims trying to conceal some of his excitement behind formality but failling, as his voice took on a high note.

"Come then. It is a walk to the caves. Remember to be quiet and respectful. A dragon is not a lapdog," Dake cautioned.
He led the way to the caves.

The shout echoed into the cave. It seemed at first that he had been unheard, but at least no dragon came out to burn him alive. But he began to hear the sounds of movement and an old man shuffled to the mouth of the cave. "Who be you? Another dragonseed? Or some fool traveller?"

"welcome to Dragonmont, Vagarr Rivers. Many dragonseed have come to Dragonmont these past months. Yer looking for a dragon too?" He eyed Vagarr with some curiosity as he stepped out of the cave. He was the oldest man Vagarr had ever seen, but still seemed healthy and strong.

"You need to either befriend the dragon or bend it to your will," he said. "But first you need to find a dragon."

"Food, o' course. Most dragons favour cattle or sheep. Some prefer fish. Besides that, yer could use a whip. But don't show fear. Dragons don't like fear." Dake grinned, open-mouthed. He had quite a few teeth missing. "There ain't much yer do need, really. Be sure to make no loud noises unless yer need to catch t'dragon's attention."

"Only by findin' a dragon and watchin' it 'unt and feed. ain't much else yer can do. Yer can learn a lot about a dragon by watchin' it, but all dragons ain't the same, same as people. Older dragons is 'arder to bend to yer will. More dangerous too, but younger dragons be faster."

Vagarr made his way up the track and he found the old man in his cave eating a meal of bread and cheese. He looked at up at Vagarr in surprise. "Back again? Well, least yer ain't burned t'death yet. Found any dragons?"

"Oh, that one. A she-dragon. Shouldn't be as hard to bond with as some of 'em. Vhagar now, she's a hoary old bitch. Killed two would-be riders recently. But no matter. That black beast sounds like just the creature."

Dake considered. "She had a single egg a few days back. There's more eggs, but they's with Dreamfyre in her cave, and some of t'others had hatchlin's. Azuria had some hatchlin's for sure, but she died a in Oldtown, they say. Yon black dragon, though. She's younger'n some. Guards her cave well, always did. Some dragons be more protective of their homes than others. But none of 'em like strangers in their caves. They know me, o' course. But they don't know you."

"It might. Not tonight though, the passes are treacherous in the dark. And I need me sleep. We'll go on the morrow if yer set on it? T'dragon will be more acceptin' if she's had a good rest too."

Dake came to the mouth of the cave, looking out at him in surprise. "I'm 'ere. How yer gettin' on wi' yer dragon?"

"I can do that," Dake replied. "Sure yer goin' to give up on t'other dragon? 'Tis up to you, o' course. Yer know yer own 'eart best. Come in while I gets me things."
