The deepest cells of Kings Landing where the worst criminals are detained. Some say a prisoner leaves the black cells only to die, whilst other prisoners simply disappear. The screams of the tortured can easily be heard by those in the black cells, always wondering if they will be next.

Vira lay in the cell where the men - though to call them "men" was an insult to true men - had left her, deep in thought. At the moment of discovery it had seemed very difficult to understand what was happening, but here in the black cells, Vira had had time to think. And the more she pondered what had happened, the more likely it seemed that there was only one explanation, shocking as it seemed.

Barely had Vira had this thought when the door opened. Queen Rhaella entered, Dark Sister at her side, and Ser Jon Gaunt behind. The queen was clearly distraught but her posture was filled with steely determination.
She ordered the door to be closed, then, hand on her sword, said to Vira "Tell me why. Maegor raised you up, we granted you a good marriage. Why would you do this to him?"

Vira looked up at the Queen coldly. She did not bother to rise. There was a gash on her cheek, which became visible in the torch light.
"You might ask those questions to Ser Symon and Ser Moryn," she replied coolly. "They were standing guard outside his door when I, a small woman heavy with child these past six months, entered his chamber for about one second before I saw your dead, mutilated husband and screamed for the guards. Instead of coming to my aid, those monsters hit me and accused me of somehow managing to murder Maegor in the one second I was in that room. His corpse was already cold when I walked in. If you are foolish enough to believe a pregnant girl of seventeen could manipulate time and manage to kill the most fearsome warrior in the realm, then maybe you deserve to be so easily deceived by white knights who are in all likelihood the kingslayers themselves."

Rhaella stepped forward and backhanded Vira so she fell back against the wall.
"You will kneel when your queen speaks to you," she commanded. "And you will address me as Your Grace, as custom demands. Furthermore, if you wish to have even the slightest hope of leaving the black cells alive, you will mind your tongue and answer my questions with a humble heart. You may be sure I will speak to the knights of the Kingsguard when I am at liberty to do so. In the meantime, I am speaking with you, so keep a civil tongue in your head unless you prefer to see it ripped out with hot pincers."
She paused and her hand slipped down to Dark Sister again. "Now. Tell me, did you lay with my husband? Did he father your child?"

Fury blazed in Vira's heart, but she hid it behind a smile.
"He did, Your Grace," she said sweetly. "Many times. He intended to claim my child as his. And when I took him in my mouth, he said I was far better than his queen. But this must not come as a surprise to you, sister." She knew how much the hint at familial connection would insult the Queen. "How many bastards has your loyal husband fathered?"

"More than I care to count," Rhaella snapped. "Her hand flashed out and it was plain she wanted to slap Vira again. "Most of them are of no consequence. Your lover is the only one worth a groat, though he has always had a rather high opinion of himself. As for other matters, well, certain acts are more suited to bastards than queens."
She started to leave then stopped at the door.
"I was once famed for my mercy, you know. I sent hundreds of men to the Wall rather than see them executed. But when my cousin Aenar rose in rebellion, I ordered his captured forces decimated by fire. That was the only time I ever enjoyed watching men die. I would much prefer not to repeat the experience. They say the kinslayer is damned in the eyes of gods and men, yet I cannot believe either one of those knights slew my husband."
She searched Vira's face for guilt or innocence, clearly very much troubled by the circumstances of their meeting.

Vira sighed. "If you are a merciful and just queen, then I implore you to use your judgment. Did you happen to see how the King's body was butchered and mutilated, Your Grace? Do you see his blood on my clothes? This is what I was wearing when I entered his chamber for an instant. A pregnant woman, unarmed, without armor. How could I have mutilated his body like that? How could I have even killed him? And when I requested that Moryn and Symon help me move the furniture aside to search for a secret passage way through which the real assassin may have escaped, their only reaction was to drag me to the cells. They were deaf to reason, in a way that can only mean they had made up their minds long before they heard me screaming for help."

"I trust the knights of the Kingsguard. I cannot believe either of them is false." But this time she looked at Vira with an expression that was not entirely contemptuous. "But who else does that leave?"
She looked Vira over. "I know full well that a woman can swing a sword." She tapped Dark Sister's hilt. "Your clothing is clean, but Blackfyre was bloody. And the king was naked." She paused again, then asked suddenly "Can you read and write, Vira?"

"His blood and brains would have splattered all over me," Vira explained. "Because his body was chopped up into pieces. And a pregnant woman of my size would stand no chance against a warrior like Maegor. And it is well known that I wield the axe competently, not the sword. I have never been trained in the sword."
"Not terribly well," Vira admitted. The past few months, Maekar had been teaching to read and write, and she had been practicing on her own, but she still took an extremely long time to write and read sentences, and often spelled things wrong and made grammatical errors.

Rhaella seemed to look at Vira with a little less contempt than before. Her expression became thoughtful. "I will send for pen and paper. I expect you to write out exactly what happened in your own words. If this matter is to be investigated, it will be done properly. There will need to be a hearing, with evidence. Perhaps a trial will prove necessary. We shall see."
She paused. "I have never seen you fight, so I do not know your own capabilities, and yet there is some sense in your words." That was said reluctantly. "It is certainly odd that the king's body was so badly mutilated, I grant you."

"You are kind and good, Your Grace," Vira said, shocked. "I am sorry for my cruel words earlier. I see you are a just woman, and did not deserve to be insulted. I will gladly write my account of how things went. And since I am with child, and my only champion is away from the city, I will request a trial by combat as a dragon duel. I will defend myself from Aegerys' back, and let the gods of Valyria decide who the victor will be."

Rhaella frowned. "Well, you are learning some humility, at least, but a dragon duel seems an unnecessary risk to place upon your child. He or she is certainly blameless. If you care little for your own life, you might at least seek to preserve the child's. I am not a child killer, Vira."

"If it is my child's welfare that concerns you, Your Grace, I am far more likely to die down here, amidst the filth and darkness, with diseased rats nibbling at me and food that is likely to poison both mother and unborn child. I implore you, if you truly have maternal concern for my baby's welfare, to transfer me to a clean tower cell where I may await my trial and my ultimate fate."
She sighed. "And a dragon duel is the least risky action for me to choose, in light of the circumstances. I cannot fight from my feet, and the only man who would willingly champion me is away in Winterfell. Besides, I am blood of the dragon as much as you are. If I am to meet my death, let it be in the sky."

"You will wait here until I have spoken further with the Kingsguard," Rhaella answered coldly. "As for the future, that is yet to be determined."
She turned and left the cell, with Ser Jon beside her. It was locked behind her.

The youngest Knight of the Kingsguard had seen better days. As ordered, nothing had been hurt that couldn't be covered by armor, but that left an expansive area to work with and the torturers in the Black Cells were nothing if not imaginative.

Maekar stood silently for a while as the interrogators worked with various clamps and pokers. "You know what I want you to say, Ser, for it is the truth. You know as well as I that it is impossible that King Maegor died at a woman's hand, and all you have to do is say so," he said quietly, stepping forward. A large brazier was lit next to the knight, and when the King gestured, one of the interrogators took a pair of heavy tongs and lifted a burning coal out of the brazier, placing it carefully on the knight's sternum. Ser Symon was strapped securely to the table, and even if he thrashed about from the pain, he ought not to be able to move enough to dislodge the coals on his chest. The interrogator placed another, and another, making a vertical line from the center of the Kingsguard's chest.
"Will you tell the court the truth about how Queen Rhaella ordered you to frame Lady Blackwood?"

Ser Symon screamed bloody murder, half-delirious as he called out to all the gods as the hot coals cooked his flesh.
"Kill me if you will." he spat, when the coals had finally cooled, leaving a line of black flesh. "But His Grace was alive when the traitorous bitch entered his chambers. Even the Warrior himself could be slain naked and unarmed in bed with a woman he trusted. No gods above or below will convince me otherwise and your assertions to the contrary shows only what an honorless cur you are, blackcloak!"

"You guarded the man for eight years, his life and his secrets. The King did not trust his own children, let alone his whores," Maekar snapped. "You saw him when she entered his chambers, and when they were done you came in and found her?"
The interrogators stepped forward again, but Maekar held up one hand, looking down at the Kingsguard it it looked like he was going to respond.

"I heard his voice clear as day. He called her in." Ser Symon insisted. "Then she butchered him like a hog with his own blade."

"When you entered the chambers, you found her holding Blackfyre, covered in blood?" Maekar asked. "How long after she entered did you follow?"

"It was on the floor, where she dropped it." he replied. "She screamed and I entered. Stokeworth was the first through the door."

"You entered after she screamed? She butchered the King silently, and then alerted you so that she could be caught?" Maekar asked sharply. "For how long was she alone with the King?"

"She would not be the first to kill someone in a passion and realize the horror afterwards." the knight said, beginning to drift in and out of consciousness. "I'm not familiar enough with the mind of a woman of a traitor to explain her actions. Perhaps you will have more luck, Queenslayer."
