Hey guys
Figured some people might want to discuss the show now it's started again so decided to make a thread. A spoiler warning is attached to the thread even though most of us know what happens, just in case HBO make significant changes somewhere or other. I'm going to post some thoughts on episode 1. I thought it was great, with just a few downsides.
Things I liked:
-The awkwardness between Sansa and Tyrion when he tries to persuade her not to give up. -Sansa and Dontos. The necklace was a nice touch and I think it might be a replacement for the hairnet. -New Daario even though I really didn't want to. -BIG dragons -Olenna's reaction to Brienne -Jon's "court-martial" scene reintroducing Slynt and Thorne reappear. Aemon's final comment in the scene was perfect. -Charles Dance as Tywin. -Joffrey taunting Jaime about the White Book. -Oberyn Martell - my favourite by far. I now feel bad for thinking he didn't look anything like the Oberyn in my head. Love him, especially his mention of Elia and Rhaegar. It was also kinda funny how Tyrion waited for him to show up and he wasn't there. -Ellaria Sand, mostly because she was Niobe in Rome
Things I was less keen on:
-The guy playing the Magnar of Thenn. However, the conclusion of the Thenn scene made up for that to some extent (I laughed!) -No Stoneheart resurrection scene. I had been hoping for that as the opening scene ever since they chose not to conclude series 3 with it so I was gutted it didn't happen at all. -Jaime's shorter hair. I know that's stupid, he just looks so different. -Reappearance of Olyvar. That guy annoys me for some reason. -The scene with Arya and the Hound was good but the scene it's based on happens later on in the books so hopefully they get some decent scenes later on.
Really curious to see how they will handle the Purple Wedding next week. I just hope it's not rushed.

I've always loved Oberyn. I was worried he wouldn't live up to expectations but he did so that makes me happy. I'm hoping his final scene isn't for while.
It was fairly faithful, I guess, but lots of invented scenes as usual, and some of the changes are kind of a domino effect i.e. Jaime and Brienne.
Arya and the Hound had a good scene but the build up with the chickens was too slow, to my mind, when I already "knew" what was going to happen and my mind was screaming "get on with it." I'm hoping they give them something interesting to do before they part ways, else they have used up their best scene together in the first episode.
Thank you for noticing the White Book being out of order. I noticed that too and wasn't sure if I was just over-tired. I'm pretty sure they made the same mistake in the genealogical book in series 1 as well. Clearly Westerosi's literate population doesn't care very much about writing things in a logical order.

I had no idea they'd swapped Daario's actor. He used to be a total hatchet face. It's like he suddenly got hot over the spring break.

New Daario is better, but still not Tyroshi enough. Oberyn is brilliant. Dany is still boring. Tyrion trying to comfort Sansa was lovely. I get annoyed that she keeps sniping at him, when he's one of the few decent people left around her. Ser Dontos' scene nearly made me cry. He was so sweet. I know that actor from comedy stuff, I had no idea he could actually be really heartfelt like that. Brienne is always, always, awesome. Her & Jaime's relationship is one of the things I hope is kept true to the source, because it's got lots of heart without being too sentimental. I got actually angry watching Ice being melted down. It's been years, but I've never gotten over Ned's death, hehe. "No! Mah nigga, Ned!" I cannot wait for next week. I am going to get out some special booze, and dance a special happy dance, just for the exit of that evil little douchecanoe, Joffrey .

I don't mind Sansa sniping at Tyrion because in the books we see that she's particularly cold to him after the Red Wedding, so it made a lot of sense. The show previously had them being too friendly to one another just before the Red Wedding, so I'm happy they are back on track. I think it makes more sense with what's coming up, too. They both have reason to suspect one another of killing Joffrey, whereas as they were previously somewhat friendly, it's logical that other people, i.e. Cersei have more justification for thinking they might be in it together. It was a brilliant scene though. I do feel for Tyrion but I feel more sympathy for Sansa. They've both got a rough deal.

I enjoyed the white book part, though it bugged me that it was out of order. Oberyn was just awesome.

Another nitpick I wanted to point out. If you notice in the White Book scene, while Jaime is telling Ser Meryn the Kingsguard's posts in the wedding he cites Ser Preston (Greenfield) who should have been dead since COK. Anyway it doesn't matter, in fact I really liked how they handled Jaime's internal monologue and turned it into a really enjoyable TV fitting scene. Joffrey, thank god the Purple Wedding is next. IMHOP he starting to turn from enjoyably hateful annoying villain into repetitious annoying person who I can't stand to hear the voice (Not criticizing Gleeson's amazing acting, just the Joffrey as a whole). There was that scene between Shae and Tyrion too... Well, Dinklage is cool as always, but I swear I cringe everytime I see Sibel Kekilli. But as a whole I really liked the episode, best premier yet. As everyone said: the Dornish arc is perfect with that Oberyn and Ellaria, Dame Diana Rigg went smooth with Olenna as she had been doing magnificently last season, that Dontos scene hit right in the feels and I won't even comment on the NW's Trial. I even liked the Thenns, though I'm still digesting the cannibalism thing (BA DUM TSSSS). Looking foward now to see Mace next week. Obligatory Edit: THIS!

I don't find Gleeson annoying. I even sort of like how Shae has been rewritten, though I didn't initially. I'm curious how they will handle the betrayal though. The one who really annoys me is Emilia Clarke. Her delivery of lines intended to be determined often comes off as forceful and unnatural and she often plays Dany as annoyingly entitled. So I find myself disliking Dany in any scene in which she is not being "natural" i.e. most of them, because her queenly act irritates me so much.
The Thenn revelation was amazing. I'm surprised they went there but it worked very well in showing that the wildlings are still really dangerous and some of them are utterly foreign.

I had totally forgotten the Slaver's Bay Arc... Or ate least I'd rather have. Barristan, Jorah, the dragons and even the new Daario get totally eclipsed by Emilia's lack of everything, she's gorgeous Ok, but even that can't save her from her meh-ness, she spoils every scene with her that "nothing" face she does and it's the same unexpressive face every single scene.. I had the same complaint about Kit's Jon Snow, but he is starting to prove himself a little better than I thought.

I've not minded Kit so much because I've always liked Jon in the books, though he wasn't a particular favourite in the show. He did well with the "trial" scene. I think he just has that kind of default sulky look though. I love the bigger dragons and the new Daario, while the other members of Dany's current entourage continue to do well, but Dany just annoys me in almost very scene. As I said above, I prefer the instances when we see a glimpse of her as a person rather than the queen. For example, Drogon snapping at her was a good scene and I liked that she smiled after the accepted the flowers from Daario. But those were the only 2 occasions when she showed her humanity.

It's not that I don't feel sorry for Sansa, I just find that she's really unnecessarily rude to the wrong people.

HBO continues to make me want to punch school girls, puppies and fluffy little lambs.
I thought the method of introducing Obeyrn and Ellia was typical HBO needless crass sexualization. And this is for two of the most sexually adventurous and aggressive characters in the books, and it still came off cheap and utterly unnecessary.
Arya and the Hound's scenes were my favorite, but no surprise there, although I was curious, was the Hound not supposed to be greviously wounded in the fight? Maybe a minor wound we didn't really notice will fester and he'll get sick that way, but I understood that he took a fairly serious wound at the Inn, in large part because he was drunk.

I agree that it would have been nice to meet Oberyn and Ellaria somewhere other than a brothel but we've definitely seen "worse" brothel scenes so far. I guess they wanted to stress their sexual attitudes but they could have easily skipped the choosing partners bit and focused on the conflict with the Lannister soldier without.
The Hound is wounded in the book and we're supposed to think Arya leaves him dying, then boards a ship for Braavos. As the show is only about 2-3 of the way through ASOS, presumably they will invent another scene to explain why Arya and the Hound part ways. God knows what they will do with them in the meantime.
Also, I forgot to mention one of my favourite scenes. Drogon snapping at Dany.

Well it just irritated me that of all the things they thought we needed to know about the Dornish, the fact that they are big on sodomy was chief among them. Yes, Dornish being all about the free love is notable in their regional character, but HBO seems unable to accomplish ANYTHING with any degree of subtlety. I do not appreciate it when TV shows or films treat me like I am an idiot.

Hah. I minded that less than I minded them making Renly/Loras so explicit, because with that the fun part was that it was never stated outright in the books. And the series 3 Pod scene and its aftermath was more annoying to my mind. Maybe they feel like they really have to keep up the nudity quota... Have to admit I was kind of annoyed by the girls being objectified. It reminded me of the brothel scenein Rome where Pullo talks like the girls are objects.

Well I've no problem with sex scenes. I have a problem with altering the story for NO OTHER REASON then that.

I've never been a fan of TV sex scenes. This one didn't bother me from a narrative perspective though because it made sense for Oberyn and Ellaria as we know them. There's a moment in the book in which Oberyn tells Tyrion that he and Ellaria have discussed including other women in their sex life and asks about the city's brothels. The scene we got is clearly a reflection of that. Seeing as it is HBO, there's no way they'd choose having them talk about it over them actually in the process of doing it.

That's what I'm talking about, when I say they lack subtlety.

Alright. I'm sure there will be sex scenes that are way more annoying/cringy in the 9 weeks to come.
