A small section of his left torso is missing where Vraxor, his bonded dragon, managed to take a small bite out of him while trying to take all of it during his bonding. Men find the wounds impressive, while most women find them attractive, a sign of his masculinity and perseverance.
Personality: He tries to be kind and understanding when possible, but has no reservations in showing the temperament of his father, Maegor the Cruel, when needed. He is quick to make both friends and enemies. Bertram tried to get along with everyone, concealing his true feelings at all costs. Spending so much time among the Free Cities as taught him to not reveal himself to enemies until he is able to deal with them properly. He and his dragon Vraxor are best friends, being with each other longer than either of them have spend with an single being. For many years Vraxor resented the fact that he was being controlled by a mere human, until he realized that Bertram was the only one to ever risk his own life for that of Vraxor. Upon realizing this, the mighty dragon began to respect and slowly grow feelings for his human. Always given food before Bertram ate, and always receiving help, at Bertram's insistence, before the human. The two have become a formidable duo.
Background: Bertram had always been a social and friendly child. With the hair and eyes of his heritage, and the stature of his father, everyone took to the boy easily. Many even predicting his eventual downfall at the hands of his father, reportedly stating, "That boy is too much and too little like his father to do him any good." Always taking to his fighting lessons more than schooling, Bertram became quite adept at using a spears, lances, and archery, always believing them to be the most useful weapons for dragonback combat, something he had always been fascinated with.
At the age of 19, he won a jousting competition held by his father. His reward was a chance to tame his own dragon. Traveling to Dragonstone, Bertram had been camping for over a week between the various boulders and mountainous outcroppings, seeing many and more dragons fly overhead. He was mesmerized by the majestic beasts, vowing that he would not only conquer, but befriend his eventual mount. After another few days, Bertram saw a massive figure soar over his head. Following the monster to it's cave, he two small dragon corpses at the entrance, and took his place in front of them. The creature let out a massive burst of black flame that seemed to absorb the surrounding light, charring the small bodies and searing off Bertram's hair. The only thing protecting his body was the thick padded leather armor and massive oaken shield, which was now alight and useless. Immediately sensing that he was outclassed, Bertram stood aside from the entrance to the cave and waited. A massive, black head began to protrude from the opening, snaking its tongue out repeatedly, testing the air, before snatching the corpses back inside. Two days later Bertram brought another fresh corpse and laid it deeper into the cave tunnel, this time Bertram waited outside of the cave. He repeated this process for over a week, every two days putting fresh young dragon corpses deeper into the lair. Upon the final day, Bertram carried four young dragon corpse into the mighty dragon's chamber, it had been a bountiful hunt. He stood to the side as the beast cooked the meat with his breath and began to devour them whole. While the gigantic creature was busy feasting, Bertram foolishly laid a hand on it's neck. The massive head turned to face Bertram, snapping faster than Bertram had believed possible, removing a small portion of his left-side torso. He immediately leaped upon the beasts back and held on for dear life. The creature bucked and roared, slamming it's sides against the walls. After hours it was too exhausted to continue, or possibly too hungry. Bertram had held steady to the dragon and stayed there while it ate the last two corpses, and throughout the night.
After one more day, Bertram returned to his father's encampment, riding the beast now named Vraxor, looking much worse for wear and in need of intense medical attention.
As soon as Bertram returned home, he began to profess and prove his newfound manhood to his father's favored mistress. For two years they held clandestine meetings until the King's Hand, suspecting intimate complexities between the two, told Maegor and had his son sent as a "political envoy" to distant Lorath in the Free Cities for twenty years.
While in Lorath Bertram met Anya Sendor, a young Lorathian, the two quickly fell in love and began making a life with each other. Eleven years later, Anya gave birth to Vaekon Targaryen. Bertram had great difficulty in getting Vraxor to accept the child, nearly eating him more than once. Eventually, young Vaekon earned Vraxor's respect when he was clearing out his rabbit traps at the age of five. Offering his entire catch to Vraxor, the dragon saw much of the boy's father in him and bowed his head to eat the food, but not before singing off every hair on the boy's head. Since then, Bertram has taken Vaekon on many flights above Lorath, teaching him how to ride, and fight on a dragon as a single entity, not as rider and mount.
Bertram has finally returned to King's Landing to a very different world and kingdom from the one he had once known. Without knowing the state of Westeros since his departure, Bertram left his family behind in Lorath, promising to send for them as soon as it was safe.
