The dragon seemed to accept Axell, though a little reluctant at first. Axell moved forward, hesitant, and was vastly relieved when the dragon didn't burn him to ashes. "What happens now?" He asked.
Unlike Vira, Axell was dressed somewhat simply, ready for travel in his riding leathers.

"Excited?" Axell replied. "Bloody terrified is more like it! I'm not blood of the dragon. But he won't hurt you, I'm sure, so I'm likely to be safe enough."
He stepped forward with feigned bravado, making a show of it by bowing deeply to Vira and then striding forward to kiss her hand. "In the songs, it's the knight who offers the lady a ride on his horse. This is really quite different."
He mounted the dragon as she had instructed, and put his arms around her waist. "Gods be good, Vira, I hope you've done this more than a few times."

He was gazing around in wonder. It had taken him a little while to feel comfortable on dragonback. After all, it was very different to riding a horse. He had relaxed after a while, though, eventually trusting Vira to ensure he didn't fall. He dismounted carefully, he who was accustomed to leaping casually from horseback, and patted the dragon's hide with a friednly hand in doing so. "You have my thanks, noble beast," he murmured, before looking at Vira again. "Do you need my help?" He asked. "What did you make of Raventree from the air? It's home to me, and always will be, but I never thought it would look so splendid from the sky."

"Of course." He watched her with the proper care and concern as they descended. "We have no sept here, because we don't need one. Even our villagers mostly follow the old gods. If any do follow the Seven, they must wait for the wandering septons to come by. The old gods don't have septs. The godswoods are our place of worship. Do you know about heart trees, Vira?"

"I will. Would you rather see my family first, or the godswood? We were married under the Valyrian rites, so I would like to show you to my gods too." He grinned.

"Yes, I thought about that when the Queen asked me to marry you. The ceremony was good enough, but Her Grace's gods are not my gods. Dragons are very...intimidating, it's true, but the heart tree has eyes. They look into our souls."
he helped her down a dodgy step, apologising for his father's failure to get it seen to.
"What a pity you're too ill to be a true wife to me. The godswood would be the perfect place to celebrate a marriage."

"Of course they are. So the gods can see."
As they entered the audience chamber, however, it seemed that live at Raventree had almost come to a halt after Aegerys had been spotted. Half the household seemed to be gathered. She saw Axell's father, who looked like an older, portly, heavily bearded version of his son, with his family around him, as well as many high ranking retainers, guards and servants. Axell put a hand to the small of Vira's back as he ushered her forward to the centre of the room, with all the people looking on.
"Father," he said. "May I introduce my wife, Vira, a dragonrider and seed of the late Prince Maeron."
Lord Blackwood rose ponderously from his seat. "Come forward, my child. Let me look at you. It has been many years since I laid eyes upon a dragonrider."

"You're good to say so," he replied. "You're a pretty girl, though. I had the shock of my life when my boy showed up on dragonback, with you. He always was frivolous, our Axell. I never thought to see him do something so spectacular."
Axell pulled a face but wisely held his tongue.

"And so you shall," Lord Blackwood agreed, as the family gathered round. "Tell me, my dear, how is it that this marriage came to pass?"

There was Lady Blackwood, fat and friendly, very welcoming and two of Axell's three siblings as well. Axell's elder brother, Patrek, was a muscular young man, with a delicate young wife, Kyra, who had given him a young son, now a toddler, with another on the way. Lastly there was Carellan, Axell's sister, a maid of fourteen betrothed to the Mallister heir to Seagard. Waltyr, the youngest son, a newly made knight, was away from home. Vira noticed that the family was welcoming but all except Lady Blackwood were a little reserved. It was, eventually, Patrek, who broached the topic on everyone's minds.
"You're common born, aren't you?" He asked, "You don't sound like any lady I ever met." He glanced at his pretty wife.

"I was merely curious," said Patrek Blackwood, as his brother exchanged a glance with their father. "It's hardly common for a common born woman to wed a knight, even if she is a dragon rider."

Lord Blackwood beckoned her close. "Patrek does not speak for us all, child. He was ever a hothead. The marriage has come as a surprise, that is all."
Patrek took his wife's hand and led her away, but none of the others seemed inclined to move.
Axell turned to Vira. "My brother was always too proud for his own good. It's lucky you weren't told to marry him."

"What family matters would those be?" Axell asked. Meanwhile, Lady Blackwood was saying something to her daughter, while the lord looked on with a thoughtful expression.

"I'm sure my father will enjoy that," he said. "Best not include Mother, though. She'll just worry. Just...be careful with Father. he's not a risk taker, though he is ambitious."

They went to the lord's solar, where Lord Blackwood offered fruit and ale. He looked to Vira with a friendly expression. "So, Vira, speak plain if you will. I am sure you have something on your mind."

Lord Blackwood rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "It may be that you are right. The suggestion has merit, certainly. You can be sure the dragon will not burn my own crops? That is a risk I cannot take. Though it would certainly please me to have the advantage over the Brackens and Freys."

"I should hope so, but dragons are dangerous." He laughed nervously. "You are a good lass, Vira, I can tell. It seems to be an admirable project and one to which I can give my full support."

"Yes, that is most suitable," Lord Blackwood agreed. "I will wish you a good night's sleep. Axell's room has been prepared for you both."
Axell grinned and took Vira by the hand. "Come, my lady. I am sure you will like to bathe."

"Not much," he said. "I've not been in the Riverlands much since he became famous. I've spent most of my time at court or fighting the crown's enemies. We'll find someone who knows, though."

"As you wish." He kissed her, fiercely, then went to join his men.
They began to march, the Raventree men searching the area for anything of interest.

She couldn't help noticing a few of the people giving her shifty glances and she guessed that some people might have aided Rivers. Most looked frightened, however. A woman was the first to come forward "He killed my daughter, m'lady. Raped her first. That were two days after he got the highborns. Afore that, it's said some here gave him shelter, but it weren't me. He makes us pay taxes to him now, for his protection. 'Cept his men are the only ones we need protection from."

Two men and a woman were brought forward to stand before Vira. They stood there trembling while the woman who had spoken retreated after murmuring her thanks.
The third man, however, cried out "Dragon whore" and tried to run.

The man screamed as his clothing was set alight. He danced madly, trying to get his clothing off, and only managed to burn his hands in the process. But the dragon hadn't put a lot of effort into it so the flame did not incinerate the man as Vira had hoped. Instead he lay on the ground with his clothes mostly gone, screaming in agony as his back was badly burned.

The first to speak was an older man. "I gave Matrim shelter. My son travels with him."

"Think they went along the Red Fork. I never asked my son where they were going next. It's best not to know."
"They toward Lord Harroway's town," another man said. "Ain't nothin' for them at Riverrun, not now the young lord be out for their blood."
