"Sip slowly," Lissa advised. "Or water your wine. That will serve. M'lady. I can scarce bear to think of what happens later, but you must bear it. It would be worse if you didn't know what happened. But you are right to hold your tongue with him. It's safer." "Thank you, Lissa, I will. I have finally learned that lesson," said Elsey, nodding slowly, then plucking a lemoncake from a tray as it swooped by in a servant's hand. "You've never mentioned your own family, Lissa, are you married?"

"You've never mentioned your own family, Lissa, are you married?" "No, of course not. I'd never have come to court if I were already married. I've a...friend, but we won't be married for a while yet." Lissa blushed. "I cannot be married so long as my girls need me." Vira was seated beside her new husband, far away from Maekar and Visenya, though not so far from Elseyris and Trajan. She saw to her satisfaction that the girl's maid was making her eat. Well if she does spy on Elseyris for Darklyn, at least she is being a kind spy, Vira thought. She turned her attention to man she had just wed and lightly kissed, but barely spoken to apart from a polite greeting and asking if he'd like any capon. He had also mentioned briefly that he followed the old gods, the faith of the First Men, which she thought odd but had not commented on. He was not bad at all, she mused. Tall and handsome with dark hair and blue eyes, and only twenty years old. She would have to make Maekar force him to dissolve the marriage one day, instead of killing him outright. He was too pretty. "How soon before me did you find out about our surprise marriage?" she asked laughingly, serving him more bread dutifully. Axell grinned and accepted the bread. "Early this morning. Her Grace came to me with the proposal and promised it would be worth my while. I would be a fool to refuse the queen, at any rate, and you look like you're worth it, even without the manse in the city. Her Grace also gave me a fine new horse and promised a new sword too. I knew I had to take a wife one day. Why not one with a dragon?"

"I'm glad you have someone close to you though, that's nice," Elsey smiled, though her face turned more serious; "How are you feeling, Lissa? What with Visenya going away. I'm going to miss her so much."

[I am glad you have someone close to you though, that's nice," Elsey smiled, though her face turned more serious; "How are you feeling, Lissa? What with Visenya going away. I'm going to miss her so much." "Me too. I wish she weren't going, but we can't stop her. I wish she would stay, so we could all be together, especially with your mother and brother gone. Now we shall have only each other," she sighed, clearly feeling she was not enough to protect Elsey from Trajan. Vira laughed. "Very fine reasoning, ser. I can't say I'm disappointed in my match either. Are you Lord Blackwood's only son?" she asked, trying not to sound too keenly interested about where he stood in his family. "No, I've an older brother and a younger, and a sister too," he explained. "But only one brother is older. They're all at Raventree now I will be happy to introduce you." He reached for the wine and filled his glass before offering it to her. "You will have to tell me what you plan to do about your child. Are you expecting me to raise it as my own?"

"We should go to Raventree Hall by dragonback, if Aegerys will accept you," she said, declining the wine and sipping cold milk instead. "Er, where is Raventree Hall, exactly? Is it in the crownlands?" "This baby will be claimed by the King as his own bastard," Vira said, but with a smile. There would be more for them to talk about it private, but here at the wedding feast, she would not speak of Maekar. "I am sure you will consider it an honor to raise it, especially if it puts you in the King's favor." "It's not raising the baby I mind, but I don't want men claiming it's mine when it's not. The bloodlines of our trueborn children mustn't be questioned. The bastard complicates matters." He reached for some fish. "Raventree Hall is in the Riverlands. I'll show you a map some day."

Even in the best of circumstances, we'd have all been married off eventually. But still, I am not going anywhere, we do have eachother."

"Nobody will claim the baby is yours," Vira said gently. "Because as I said, the King will claim the bastard publicly." "I see that now, but I had to ask," he replied. "This marriage was not of your choosing, I know, but I'm told the other wasn't either. So we should at least be friends. It will be easier for both of us that way. And it will be no hardship to lay with you." He leaned in and kissed her. His mouth tasted of wine. "That would have been nice, but I suppose we couldn't all remain together forever. Even in the best of circumstances, we'd have all been married off eventually. But still, I am not going anywhere, we do have each other." "Yes, and I'm thankful for it. I could not bear the thought of you being forced away to some castle," Lissa whispered, glancing at Trajan. "I will do all I can to help you, but I'm just a servant. I cannot keep you safe."

"I would never ask or expect you to put yourself in any danger, even for me. Just knowing you are here for me is a huge help."

She kissed back, pleasantly surprised. What good luck it had been to not have to marry Rhaegar after all! "We shall be very good friends," she said, with a pleasant twinkle in her eye. "I have no doubt of that, my dear." Seated a short way down the bench, Maekar was chatting animatedly with a pair of knights, with his arm around Visenya, and he would pause every now and then to playfully feed her a but of capon or offer her some wine. He was clearly on his way to drunk, and Vira saw him lean forward to whisper something him Visenya's ear, making her giggle. However when Axel Blackwood leaned in to kiss her, Vira caught a glimpse of Maekar's face, and she was able to read the death of Axel Blackwood in his eye. He did not watch them, turning his attention back to Visenya quickly, but in the brief moment that he met Vira's eyes she could see the jealousy and anger there as clear as day.

Just knowing you are here for me is a huge help." "I'm glad. At least your sister seems happy enough. That's my only comfort right now. Maybe, in time, it will be easier for you too." She kissed back, pleasantly surprised. What good luck it had been to not have to marry Rhaegar after all! "We shall be very good friends," she said, with a pleasant twinkle in her eye. "I have no doubt of that, my dear." "Excellent. It will be strange to have a wife, but we'll have a home of our own, at least. "Our children will be beautiful, with you for a mother." He speared a piece of fish and held it up to her mouth. "Try this, my dear."

"It would. I'd sooner have my own manse than spend most of my time in an inn, as I've done in the past. We're to have a room in the castle for tonight, of course. We can see our new home tomorrow. I wish I could say all Riverlords remembered their courtesies, but we have our share of boors, the same as everywhere else." He winked. "Lord Bracken is particularly boorish, I must say. My ancestral rival, you know. Blackwoods and Brackens have been feuding for hundreds of years, maybe even thousands. The River kings came and went, but we lived, and kept right on fighting."

"I'd like that," Axell said. "We'll see our manse then we'll go to Raventree. But will your dragon accept me as a passenger? It's said Lord Toyne died trying to ride a dragon. I'd hate to die so soon after meeting my lovely wife."

"I'm happy with that," he said. "I had no idea that girl was so reckless. I do not intend to be so foolish. I hope I have always treated the dragons with respect, on the rare occasions I have been near them. I know I am a land dweller. Though I have no doubt it will please my father to see us flying together. I daresay our marriage will please him in many ways."

"Indeed. There will be time enough for that in future. I'll gladly take the manse for now," Axell remarked. "Be sure to charm my father, though. I'm sure you won't find that difficult."

"That is exactly the kind of flattery my father will enjoy," he said, topping up their wine before drinking deep from his own glass. "Smile a lot and compliment him. He has a weakness for a pretty face."
