After arriving back in the capital, about a day or two before the weddings, Lord Maekar Dracaryn seeks out his uncle, the newly made Lord of Oldtown, who had arrived in the capital himself a few days prior. Vira is on his arm, and when they arrive at the manse that Maelys maintains in the city, the guards announce them as the Lord of Darkheart, and Lady Vira Ghostrider.

Maelys was having some tea when someone knocked at the door. He peacefully went to the door, clad only in his bath robes.
"How can I help you...?" He opened the door to find Maekar and Vira paying him a visit. "Oh... Please, do come in."

If Maekar was astonished to see the Lord of Oldtown answering the door to his own house, it did not show on his face. "My lord uncle," he said, with a small nod of greeting. "I trust your flight to the city was pleasant? How are you finding Oldtown, in the months since the army disbanded?"

"It is a pleasure to meet you, my lord," Vira said politely. "I have heard much about the famed leader of the City Watch."

"Indeed that's me darling... But those days are gone. Now I'm just a poor old Lord." Maelys sat on his armchair, offering the visitors a seat. And enjoying the fact that the words "M.T. Lord of Oldtown" were sewed in his bathrobes.
"Fine enough, nephew. The city is beautiful, though I'm still getting used to walk around that maze." He took a sip of his tea. " There's still much work to be done, principally where the Hightower stood."

Maekar nodded. "I heard that the King also granted you the fealty of Lord Hightower's former vassals; a great set of prizes to be sure, perhaps even more valuable than the Lordship itself," he said with praise. They all knew that a Lord's primary income came from rents collected from peasants on his land, and taxes collected from his vassals. The more of each he had, the richer a man could become. "You have my congratulations."

"It is no more than you deserve," Vira added. "Though to be sure one could say you deserve even more."

Maelys nodded with a grin, he was proud of himself, like he'd never been before. "The same to you, Lord Maekar. I've been to Darkheart Keep, it's a beautiful place."
"I've had more than enough for my years of service." No, he didn't... After he received the title, he felt something different, something inside him craved for more. "Sorry, I forgot to ask, darling. And you are?" H eeyed Vira suspiciously, stroking his mustache.

"My name is Vira," she said with a smile. "I'm a seed, sired by Prince Maeron ten-and-seven years ago. I tamed Aegerys the Ghost two months ago, and I have heard much of your valor."

"Oh then it's you the new Dragon Rider...I must congratulate you for the task. " He smiled at her piece of flattery, it's impressive how everyone starts noticing you after you get title.
"Would the lovely couple care for a drink? I'm having tea, but if you wish I can get you some wine."

"I will have just tea," Vira said, "As I'm with child." She touched her belly lightly. It was a very small bump, but just beginning to show.

"She is to be wed to Lord Rhaegar, when I am wed to Lady Visenya," Maekar added, though Maelys could not miss the way Maekar's arm slid around Vira protectively, nor the gentleness with which he placed his hand on her bump. "Tea will be quite fine, and thank you, my lord," he said.
"As for Darkheart, it has not suffered overmuch from the war, I am thankful to say, so there is not too much work to be done setting it to rights. To tell it truly, I do not envy your own task, until I begin to think about the far greater gains you will recieve when it is ended. A man should aspire to better himself, and to rise in this world; one who does not has merely wasted his days, would you not agree?"

Coincidentally, the tea-pot and two cups were lain on the table. He poured them some.
"Aye, though I believe I won't see them so soon. Before I finish my castle I still may find under a heavy load of debts." That last part of his nephews question was a bit strange, deep inside a part of him was not liking this surprise visit.

Maekar laughed lightly at that. "It seems everyone in the Kingdom is in debt these days, though I have been fortunate enough to escape such myself," he said, pouring some tea for Vira, and then for himself. He sipped slowly, eyeing Maelys over the rim of the cup. "Even in peacetime, we can find ourselves beset on all sides. It is important then, to have powerful allies and good friends upon which one can rely in difficult times," Maekar replied slowly, gauging the other man's response.

Vira gave Maekar a light kiss on the cheek in thanks for pouring her tea and sipped it slowly. She looked perfectly peaceful, calm and happy, as if she trusted Maekar very much indeed.

"As you might guess, Lord Maekar..." Maelys chuckled. "I lack those as much as I lack my pants at the moment."
"But I may find myself in need of both in a recent future..." He copied his nephew's gesture, gently sipping his tea and eyeing him over the cup's rim.

"You are wise, to see the neccessity of such, my lord," Maekar replied. "Now more than ever, will the crown need strong allies throughout the realm, to keep order and peace and to maintain stability. From the quality of the City Watch while under your leadership, I know that you are well skilled at maintaining all three, even under the most difficult of circumstances."
He took another sip of tea, before setting his cup down on the table and slipping his arm around Vira's waist. "I can only assume that the Oldtown Watch has fared just as well under your command, though I fear their skills and discipline may be tested sooner than one might wish. Has his grace the Prince of Dragonstone spoken with you regarding his plans for the Faith of the Seven in Oldtown?"

"I'm planning to implement there the same rigid training I had here." He smiled again at the flattery.
"No I don't believe so..." Maelys frowned, he had had some experiences with the Seven but nothing that he was proud of, a small stain in his past. "Is the King aware of that?"

"Prince Aegon approached me after the battle, and sought to convert me to his religion, though I declined his offer," Maekar replied. "It was not just my conversion that the Prince sought, but my personal allegiance, though he would not specify for what reason he was asking. In truth, I was purturbed, though the King waved away my concerns when I broached them; I fear that he still sees Prince Aegon as a boy rather than a man grown, one capable of action. I know that your loyalty to the King is without question and far above dispute."
Maekar hesitated for a moment, before continuing in such a soft voice that Maelys had to strain to hear him; it was certain none of the servants could be eavesdropping, unless one of them was crouching under the low table that separated the two men. "I dare not speak the words in public, without proof or even evidence to support them, but it is my suspicion that Prince Aegon has been gathering allies for himself and intends to move against the King."

"Horrible," Vira murmured. "And not surprising, considering the King has kept Prince Aegon's toy under lock and key."

"It wouldn't surprise me." Maelys muttered thinking aloud,he realized his mistake right after speaking. "Eeeerm... Well... I'm sure we can't afford another War against the faith so early. If this is true, this must surely be pruned before it takes roots. Have you talked of this with anyone else, my lord?"

"With whom could I seek counsel? Prince Aegon is her grace the Queen's favorite, it is doubtful she would deign to hear a negative word about him. I would have broached the issue with the Princess Rhaena, or your lady mother, my grandmother, but both of them have flown east with Aegon and the Lord Commander. After the King paid no heed to my concers, I did not know to whom else I might speak," Maekar replied. "With your brother, Prince Aemon fallen on Dragonstone seeking to tame Vhagar, I did not know whom at court I could trust."

"Indeed... You did the right thing. The Queen may be reluctant to hear, but she'll take it better from me than you." Maelys stroked his mustache. "Although I won't take a risk this soon, we'll need those proofs you claimed not to have."
"I may still have some friends on the streets, I'll see if I can get something from them."

"Is it necessary to speak to the Queen about this?" Vira asked delicately.

"I won't... For now." He paused. "For if Aegon tries something, I'll be glad to say 'I told you so, dear sister.' "
